Local query doesnt trigger local maps listings?
-
Hi guys,
Ive been doing local seo for quite some time and had great results from both organic listings and local maps listings (and a merged listings).
However ive noticed time and time again that local maps listings dont appear in serps on all local searches, even the most popular local search terms.
Take the phrase "marketing company glasgow" local phrase, local intent but no maps results. But if you click on maps on the laft hand side, theres clearly tons of mpas results.
Any ideas why google dont display local businesses on certain local intent phrases?
Is there any way around this? Even with good on page seo, and good rankings organically, it would be great to get the maps listing on page 1 too.
Thanks
Robert

Hi Robert,
You are right in your conclusion that on things like this 'only Google knows'. However, your example term is an interesting one as Google has historically been odd in their treatment of marketing and SEO firms when it comes to local results. Google kicked SEO companies out of the local organic results a couple of years ago, and some marketing firms got the boot as well. However, for the term you've specified, I do see 1 blended local result coming up for a firm called 'The Marketing Company Scotland'. Everything else on the page of results is organic (searching from my location in California, but at least one company is being given local treatment.
It has long been a mystery how Google decides which queries have a local intent. Sometimes they just don't show local results for things you think they would and other times, they show local results when that wasn't your intent, as the searcher, at all. There isn't really a way to influence their decision on this...at least, not that I've heard of, and like yourself, I've been been doing Local SEO for years.
The only thing to hang your hat on is that Google is constantly changing their handling of local. What they are doing today may not be what they are doing and, eventually, you may see them decide that your query of choice is local in intent.
Thanks for asking such a good question here!
Miriam

i think this is probably a "only google knows" as you say.
Be good to know for sure

You might be asking a question that Google only knows though. We know how to optimise to increase and get into those map listings, but actually getting the map system activated for a local search term maybe a different matter all together.
But im not 100% as I not a map wizard, sure someone on here will know a lot more about it.
Could be down to the number of queries for the term before it activates, queries against number of listings, might not be but just an example of what could be taken into account.

maybe not the best example then lol but still only one map, merged listing. what about trust deeds glasgow?
local search and i know theres lots of local businesses and maps listings but google dont show them?
im not an expert on maps so maybe someone can shed some light?

I just did your example term and got a map result in organic with a visual map top, right allowing you to see full screen map with pointers.

Question on following schema for local
Hello I built out a blog for a client and used Yoast Local SEO plugin for WordPress. Here is one of the pages generated for a physical location for the business. http://water-notes.generalplumbingsupply.com/?wpseo_locations=sonora-ca My client who manages a website for the same business built out a locations page and insists that their pages rank better for local search. I think the pages are spammy. Individual location page for the website managed by my client: http://www.generalplumbingsupply.com/American-Canyon-CA-v1.HTML Multiple locations page: http://www.generalplumbingsupply.com/Locations.HTML What page should we be using? Thank you for your help.

What is the best way to go about doing local seo for two offices? Everything I can research on local seo provides awesome information...if you have one office, but we have two: one is in downtown Tampa and the other in a northern suburb. Does displaying a mobile number for business hurt local SEO?
Perhaps a silly question but could someone please clarify if displaying a mobile number in the main site or Google places etc would hurt local SEO? Is having a regional landline/fixed telephone number a ranking factor? EDIT: This is for a UK site, does anyone have experience of this is UK please?

Getting a Google Places listing verified on an automated phone system.
I've been having issues getting my Google Places/+ listing verified as we have an automatic phone system. If you call our office you have to dial a number to reach an actual human being or before you can leave a message. Whenever the Google Bot calls we aren't able to receive our Google Place verification code. Currently.. there is no option to send a postcard.. which is weird because for awhile that was the only option. Has anyone had any success on an automated phone system & how did you do it? Thanks!

How many local citations directory listings are recommended to obtain a month?
Hi, I am interested to hear what others recommend for the amount of local references & citations to obtain a month. For example, have you found it is better to get listed in SEOMoz's top 50 Local Business Citation Directories over a 30 day period, or is it the same if you registered on all of them in 1-2 days. What about larger numbers, registering on 100 national local citation websites, 50 industry related websites, and 15 city related sites. Have you found any large negative ranking effects on registering on all of them for your clients in say a 10-20 period rather than stretching out the registration process over say 3 months.. Jeff

What impact will Google removing 3rd party citations from listings have on citations being ranking factors?
So now that Google are going to remove 3rd party citations from listings, will they still carry the same weight for local rankings or will this be reduced? If so, how much and when?

Targeting Local Search Terms
I normally advise clients never to optimise around keywords with very low or even zero recorded Google search volumes. However, if the core keyword has decent volumes but the organisation is serviing specific towns/cities/locations would you consider it valid to optimise for : core keyword + focused location (even if this has zero search volumes). The Google Places results are obviously highly relevant but depending on the core keyword you sometimes get the 3-box places at the top but sometimes in the middle of the natural results.
