Competitor links on unmaintained pages

hey all, this is my first posting...
I have a webpage that is a great resource (ranked 3rd for my keyword) , and unarguably better than the site that is taking the first 2 places.
Because my page is a much more useful resource for the same thing I have been looking at who is linking to them and asking them to take a look at mine in the hope that they will replace their link with my more up to date page.
The problem is a LOT of the high value links they have (many .edu links) are from old, now unmaintained pages, where I have no chance of getting a link (or even contact with a webmaster)
Its frustrating that they have so many good links to such an out of date page. I just wondered if any of you have had a similar situation. It just seems very hard to knock someone off that top spot if they have been established a long time, regardless of the quality of their content.
I guess there is no solution to it except to find lot of other high value links myself - so not so much a question as a comment really! but happy to hear peoples own experiences of that sort of situation.

Since you are below them, crafting an extremely good title tag and snippet is essential to win clicks away from them. Offer surprise, mystery, free shipping, kickass price or free beer in your title to win traffic into your site.

Long established websites do have the benefit of tons of solid links because when they started they all there was. If you're pulling in #3 spot that is great. And you are doing the correct thing in trying to contact folks that are linking to them if you have better / more recent information. We fight the same battles for old established companies that still out rank us for top keywords even though their site looks like they were made during Clinton's first term, and haven't been touched since.
Climbing up the ranking should be a little easier now (depending on your industry) due to social media. Get the buzz, forum and blog links and eventually you'll get the spot.

I think you have answered the question yourself and you already knew that

Just keep doing what you are (building/maintaining that great content), but also spend time in reaching out to people who would want to link to you. I would also possibly add a link to us box with an easy to use HTML code that people could use to link to you.

Should I focus on building links to my homepage, or internal pages?
I'm hiring several PA's to contact site's linking to my competition. Should we try to get links to content pages (blog post, article, etc) or build links directly to my homepage? More info: My site is a web application, so most links will naturally fall on the homepage. If links to content are more important we'll need to change our strategy. Link Building/ Off page strategy. Do we have already have a 'hook' or should we create more specific content.
Hi Guys. As part of our link building campaign I've been creating a database of people who might link to our site. We're a diary company. So I’ve been focusing on people interested in stationary, paper, pens, etc who also blog. We have a unique product at TOAD diaries, it's essentially an online tool that allows you to design your own diary. You can choose size, colour, duration, etc and also personalise the cover. So the product (we think) is very compelling and interesting. First of it’s kind. Do you think that the site itself would considered 'good content'? i.e) It's already a very interesting idea that's worth linking to. Are the following considered bad links for Link Building.
I've been doing a lot of research lately on link building & I've read a lot about having a diverse amount of links. Social links, Blog links, comment links, footer links, No follow links, Directory links as well as links with Anchor text URL match, brand match, partial brand match, non-descriptive, and with keywords. But there is a lot of talk of removing those links that look like a site that's built just for link building purposes.... but Directories are basically built for link building are they not? I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if they feel links from the following directories would be bad links. How Are Competitor's With Zero Links (According to SEOmoz) Ranking Highly?
Hey everyone! This is my first post in the community after just signing up for SEOmoz. I've already got a ton of value from this community so I'm looking for to giving back as much as possible. The keyword gets 8000+ monthly searches on Google. Not so many, but the keyword indicates high buying intention. The funny thing is that the top ranking page has 0 backlinks (according to OSE). It seems as though there are some black hat tactics being used, as I doubt that they are ranking solely with on-page optimization. Any idea what's going on? Have you guys/gals seen this before?

We have links from our page at .com and .com/. Should we be concerned about this and try to merge?
When running link reports for our page .com, it redirects to .com/. We do have links for both URLs, but .com/ is significantly more than the other. Should we be concerned by this? Are we losing some links because of this?

I'm doing some SEO for small niche service sites...and aside from niche directories and some light article marketing and local search directories (yelp, etc) there really isn't a budget for content generation. I really only have a budget for profile/submission links. What are some sites where you can quite easily fill out a personal profile with an anchor text variable link that may not be THAT juicy but will stick (i.e. not a spam/fake profile type of link, but something like Linkedin). I'll start with giving away 1 www.istockphoto.com Any others that aren't obvious?

Which link should I use for link building?
I have an article which have high rank on Google. But recent, I use mod rewrite url so this article have new url. old: mywebsite.com/c1/p-1 new: mywebsite.com/c-e/p-1 Now, google is indexing old url. I want to ask when I build linking to my site, which link should I use for link building? I should build linking for new url or old url. Thanks

Will building up the page rank of a page you have a inbound link bring any benefit?
Right then here we go You have a link in an article on a well known national newspaper site that points at your website. Is there any benefit of linking to the newspaper article in order to build up the PR of the article page and therefore passing over some link "juice"? Sub questions 1. Would it be more beneficial simply to gain links to your main website? 2. What are the chances of the article going into the archives and then at some stage being deleted? 3. If the article link points to a domain, which then forwards to a another domain will this pass on any "juice"? 4. If the article points to a domain that then 301's to another domain will this pass on any "juice"? 5. Does Google simply register the link and "juice" on the first pass or will it revisit and upgrade the "juice"? 6. What are the negatives? 7. What are the positives?
