Best source to keep abreast of Google Alogorith Changes
-
Good morning from 13 degress C about to chuck it down wetherby UK...
I want to make sure i keep my finger on the pulse regarding Google Algorithmic changes.
What is the best source to make sure your kept up to date with Googles ongoing tweeks to its Algorithm (apart from SEO moz).
Thanks,
David

Search Engine Land & SEO Roundtable are probably the 2 best news sources when it comes to keeping abreast of the latest algo updates:

Hey David,
SEOmoz themselves do a nice job of documenting the major algorithm changes and linking to supporting documentation from sights like SearchEngineLand/Journal, etc.
It's also nice historically if you want to go back and look at past changes
Google Algorithm Change History:
-
Forums that are visited by lots of noobs, people who use SEO as a ranking tool instead of content, and "SEOs" who have shallow understanding of ranking factors usually get really busy right after an algo change.
They explode with lots of reactionary post titles like... "Wah! My rankings disappeared!"........ "Google hates me!".... etc. These begin within an hour of the the algo's roll-out, peak over the next 48 hours and drag on for a few weeks. Many of these visitors are first-time posters in the forum and arrive in a panic because they don't understand what happened to their site.
If you watch these forums and follow a few of the threads where intelligent people describe their problem and knowledgeable people respond, you can frequently get a sense of what and who is getting whacked. If you know the difference between "intelligent" and "knowledgeable" (very different human qualities) you can get the most out of this reading.
The SEOmoz Q&A has a bit of this but not as much as forums such as SEOChat, DigitalPoint and the Google Support forums.
-
Set up iGoogle/Google Reader with a bunch of news feeds, Twitter feeds, etc. probably the best way to stay in touch with the SEO world.
-
I would definitely suggest regular reading of Google Webmaster blog http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/ where they write about current and upcoming changes. Also, read Matt Cutts http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/type/googleseo/

Should I keep a website which is outdated or close it down? It has a few links. If I keep it can I redirect people to our newer site?
We are in the process of buying some intellectual property, and it's websites are very dated and only have around 5 external links each. What's the best course of action? Do we close down the sites; then redirect the urls to our current website, or do we leave the sites up, but redirect people to our new site. Reference: current website: www.psychometrics.com Old sites that come with the intellectual property: http://www.eri.com/ plus http://www.hrpq.com/ Thanks, Dan Costigan

My traffic keeps going down...
My website been through many changes the last 5 months. From migrating http to https, server transfer and more. Everything was double checked all the redirects are perfect (301) to the https pages (we have like 28K backlinks so everything needs to be correct), in a matter of fact the migration to ssl made in October and in November the stats went high. The problem is that at the end of November after the server migration the traffic went down and is stably down till today. We re-checked the redirects in every aspect and more in depth and finished fixing issues around end of January. Also before 1 week we stopped the functionality of a parameter (product sort) and removed it from the website entirelly and canonicaled the urls that were using it so if google tries to test those urls with the parameter to see a canonical tag and eventually drop them out of index and stop crawling them. Generally we tried to fix the crawling efficiency and speed. The technical SEO was on fire the last weeks. Still i cant see improvement in rankings, i only see drops. What is the problem here? Where should i look? Any ideas? In webmaster tools we have no 404's and no manual actions. The visibility in Sistrix goes down (check attachment), the ahrefs organic traffic goes down, semrush stats go down... My website is: https://www.pccdkeys.com ecfp87

How to track my actual traffic source using Google Analytics which are now showing as referral traffic?
Hi Mozzers, I went through many Q&As in the community this morning. I found a solution where I could just remove the referral site in analytics>admin>property>tracking info>referral exclusion list. So I removed paypal.com which was the main referral traffic. I thought the problem is solved. Later today I got another order, now the referral traffic is from eway.com, now what? Yes I know I will add this to the exclusion list but there will be many more referral sites. My main concern is I am not able to track the actual traffic source. How do I do that? 1. Do I need to use google url tracking for all my pages?

2. Do I need to add tracking code in each page of the site?
3. Is there a way to track the actual source of this traffic, now that the transaction is already made but reflects as referral traffic in Google Analytics? jZjTN0 -
Subdomain as News Section instead of Source in Google News?
Hi, trying to dig into Google News for a large site, mostly containing news.
Technical SEO | | m.m
The structure of the site network is subdomain.domain.se, and each subdomain has it's own brand with it's own news: x.domain.se
y.domain.se
z.domain.se
etc... Each brand/subdomain is more or less to equate with its own subjectfield/section. In Google News every subdomain is configured with it's own Site Source url, but also having the set up with one section with the same url. It seems like they're getting conflicts in Google News, Google can't always figure out which news article to which brand. Example: an article owned by brand A, but it is sometimes happens that articles getting labeled as brand B in the news SERP, though the link takes you correctly to brand A. I am thinking that this config in News Publisher Center may be a problem? Anyone having any thoughts if that would be better if we delete all source urls except for domain.se-brand and then put all the other subdomains as sections? www.domain.se x.domain.se y.doamin.se z.domain.se Any smart thoughts on this one? Or anything else that could make this wrong labeling (all content included images are hosted in same domain for example). Regards,

How to know which pages are indexed by Google?
So apparently we have some sites that are just duplicates of our original main site but aiming at different markets/cities. They have completely different urls but are the same content as our main site with different market/city changed. How do I know for sure which ones are indexed. I enter the url into Google and its not there. Even if I put in " around " it. Is there another way to query google for my site? Is there a website that will tell you which ones are indexed? This is probably a dumb question.

Google autorship in specific field?
Hi, I want to ask you about something I 've read about google and authorship. It is written that it is better to show yourself as a author in a specific field. I myself have knowledge and interest in many fields - like SEO, vegan living, martial arts. And I want to be seen as specialist in all of them. Does it mean that we are limited to mark with autorship articles in only one field, in order to be seen as expert in a specific field? f.e. Should I mark with "rel=author" the articles that are about SEO because I want to be seen as author in that specific field for sure. Iif I mark with "rel=author" articles also about martial arts would these affect the understanding about my expertise in SEO?

Does Site Structure Affect Google
Hi - I'm pretty new at this. We’re running an e-commerce affiliate site at http://www.mydomain.com. So we don’t take payments but customer gets passed through to third party sites when they select to buy a product. We have a blog at http://www.mydomain.com/news. I think Google is treating these 2 sites as as separate sites for PR. For this reason we're thinking about moving this to http://news.mydomain.com. Anyone have any experience in this?

What changes do i need to make to my site to get into google news
Hi, when we had the old design, we were in google news but then when we upgraded our site, we had a major problem which forced us to have to redesign our site. Since then we have not been included in google news and we would like to get back in. We only want to be in google news for the following page http://www.in2town.co.uk/Latest-News-Headlines But for some reason, no matter what we do we keep getting knocked back. I would love to know what we should be doing to get into google news and see what the problems are. We have moved to a bigger dedicated server to increase speed so i know it is not that. Any help would be great Also is there an alternative to google news that i can get our site into to generate traffic and to get our news stories straight out to people Hi, Thank you for your note. We appreciate your interest in sharing your content with us. However, when we reviewed your site, we found that we cannot include it in Google News at this time.
