Anchor text distribution
-
Hey SEO Mozosphere -
Working on a link buying strategy. I know it is wise to target not only anchor text links but also branded text links to keep your anchor text distribution looking natural. However, do you think it would be too risky to ask for branded text links only from low PR sites and focus the more valuable keyword anchor text links on high PR sites?
-
I agree. In general, I would say that your branded links should always be greater than any single keyword. Sounds like you are doing it right.
-
Exactly! And as most of the high PR links you have right now are probably brand name or URL, influencing the ones you can will probably still result in a natural ratio of both types.
I just quickly checked the URL in your profile with opensiteexplorer: The Top 30 URLs are pretty much all domain or brand, so even if you could add 5 powerful optimized links, the ratio still would be ok, in my personal opinion.
-
Yes I understand it would be much harder to get the target keywords from high PR sites, but assuming that I could, i guess my question is if anyone believes that Google penalizes for unnatural Pagerank-Anchor Text distributions. In a purely organic link environment, some keyword text would most likely be found on both high PR and low PR sites, not only one or the other.
-
Hey Thomas,
I get the idea, my train of thought was the following: As you say, the WSJ or NYT or whatever high quality site usually rather links to your site with the URL or brandname, rarely with an optimized anchor. Hence, if you have the ability to influence the anchor at a high quality site, this probably won't hurt, as your more powerful links generally have more branded keywords anyhow.
So the overall ratio of URL / brand / optimized anchor for high quality sites, shouldn't be bad, if your link building efforts are reasonable.
-
I would opt for the opposite strategy. I would prefer powerful sites using branded keywords, and lower PR using targeted keywords. The Wall Street Journal is more likely going to link to Nike using the term Nike over "running shoes". Looks more natural. However, if you can score both a branded link and a "running shoes" deep link then go for it.
-
Ahh yes, link building. Thank you for your input. Obviously i will not get a definitive answer on this, but it's great to hear people weigh in on the assessed risks.
Thank You!
-
Hey Zack,
I am pretty sure, you meant "link building", right?
In this case I would assume, a mix of different keywords and/or brand terms are ideal, getting more targeted anchors from the more powerful sites should not be a problem.
Cheers,
Frank

Anchor Text vs Rankings!
Let's say I have a page about houses for sale (which has the biggest number of search queries/month). I want to rank with that page for another variations like house for sale, and house sale. Now, if i build links only with anchor text **houses for sale **(presuming that Google is OK with that) and i will take top 3 for that KW, i will rank very high too for the other two combinations of words? Or Google treats different plural vs singular and the stop word for. This is an example based on site for one client of mine. His site is about Hotels in Mamaia (hoteluri in mamaia in romanian) and i build links with anchor text hoteluri in mamaia. For this KW i took pos 4 but for hoteluri mamaia i am on page 9 from Google.ro. These two combinations of words are 90% the same in my language. For you to know hoteluri mamaia has bigger numeber of search queries/month (6 600 vs 260).

Links with very bad anchor text!
I have a client with an online shop with auto parts in Romania, on google.ro. The site is quite old but it hasn't good links. The only links (about 700 seen in OSE) the site have are from porn sites/forum/blogs with all kind of obscene words in the anchor text. Those links were placed by competitors, i am sure of that. Now how Google treats those links? Does he know that those links were not placed by any normal human? Does it gives credit to them or doesn't? The site is on a very competitive niche and it is not ranking so good.

How important are exact keywords in your anchor text?
Hi Guys, I’m relatively new to SEO. I’ve recently started working for a website design company and am in the process of changing the anchor text in the footer of all of our clients sites. At the moment most of them read “graphic design & web development by dara creative” with anchor text being dara creative taking you to our home page. As you can see we are not fully taking advantage of the keywords that could have a higher impact. So I’ve done some keyword research and I hope to concentrate my efforts on the following keywords as the anchor text leading to the home page; website design Dublin, website design Ireland, web developemt Dublin and web design Ireland so it may read something like “web design Dublin by dara creative” However this doesn’t read so well as people may think that the company might be called “web design Dublin”. So the alternative might be “web design in Dublin by dara creative”. So my question is which would rank better? Does google rank the exact searched keywords higher than broader searched words? Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks rob

How to get a plain text instead of csv output for backlink analyzer?
The link analyzer looks really great, I'm using it now to do some reverse engineering and it is seemingly able to give me far more than just the 1k limit we can get from yahoo site. But it spits out the results to a csv file which just has everything bunched up into a bunch of gibberish. Is there a way to get a plain text file so its readable/usable? Or how to convert or view the csv file properly? Thanks

New links for Internal Anchor Text
If pages get moved and 301s are in place is it still important to update the anchor text links to the new page url? For example would it be optimal to go through old blog posts and change the urls for the anchor text if the old anchor text url redirects to the new page url.
