Thinking of trying a SEO Badge Widget project... any advice?

What are some best practices for launching a Badge program?
I've been researching this for a large brand... they feel they want to have these badges to promote certain blogger partners within a niche. However, we have no way to "Rank" the bloggers... so it's an arbitrary factor, IMO.
What are some of the hooks that other successful badge programs have used? Is there a definitive post around here with suggestions?
I'm really on ground zero and have been tasked to execute on this and really seem to be flying blind. Any guidance or suggestions would be helpful! Thanks!

Hi there!!
If you don't have a way to rank them, consider developing one. It could breed competition in the ranks especially if this is something you would want to do year over year.
Consider the motivation that these bloggers would have for using this particular badge. If it becomes a badge of honor or recognition that could become incredibly enticing those those individuals motivated by such a thing. Other people will be motivated by a feeling of exclusivity instead. Using that exclusivity as a lever in the program can help to engaging that type of blogger.
For almost all of the blogging population I would say public recognition is a motivator. Depending on the size of the group you may want to consider making it a public deal...announcement with a list sort of thing to stroke their ego.
Credibility is key as well. Ensuring the program is one that actually extends and increases their credibility will make them far more likely to participate.
The O'Reilly book - Building Web Reputation Systems by Farmer & Glass will go a long way to helping clarify this in much greater detail. I'd highly recommend that!
For a good example check out the Power150 blogger list. Perhaps the best example there is. I also know of many conference organizers who utilize badges in their conference marketing with their speakers. SMX and BlogHer come to mind initially.

Will using display:none; to hide images hurt SEO?
A popular trend among bloggers right now is to hide their long images for social media (Pinterest) using the code. This makes it so that when a reader clicks the Pin it browser button, the long image still shows up but is not displayed inside their post. Also note that the alt description for Pinterest marketers are always keyword rich, board line keyword stuffed. I've read this article from Google on hiding text and images https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66353?hl=en but not sure if this practice fits inside that scope. What are your thoughts? Will this hurt SEO?

Do you think that Content Locking (force to share to unlock content) is manipulative and will eventually be penalised by Google?
There is a tactic called content locking which requires a user to share a post or homepage URL in order to unlock content (either a video, a full post or downloadable ebook). Do you think this is manipulating signals to increase search rankings? Argument Against Using Content Locking Social signals and links from Google Plus shares clearly correlate to increased search engine visibility. Requiring a user to pay for content with social sharing is only used to improve search rankings. According to the webmaster guidelines: "Avoid tricks intended to improve search engine rankings. A good rule of thumb is whether you'd feel comfortable explaining what you've done to a website that competes with you, or to a Google employee. Another useful test is to ask, 'Does this help my users? Would I do this if search engines didn't exist?'" Argument For Using Content Locker Users tend to value their social profiles and won't share something unless they believe it is valuable. Requiring a share is just a push to motivate them to share something they value. Additionally, it is similar to an email opt-in in that the publisher now has a social media lead they can follow up on. It's not just about SEO, it's about tapping into social network traffic and engagement on social networks.

Google+1 on site or on google+ for SEO?
Hi Have just read an inspiring post by Cyrus @ www.seomoz.org/blog/tips-to-use-google-for-seo But before I ask my existing social media contacts and email lists who have a Google account to +1 my site, what offers most benefit from a search visibility perspective? Should I ask my contacts to +1 my homepage (there is a +1 button on there) or Click on the +1 button on my businesses Google+ page and also ask them to join my circles? Hope this makes sense? Many Thanks

Newspaper SEO is tricky business, primarily because of the way you deal with Keywords. So, my question is, how do you go about building links for newspaper websites, what keywords should you use and what link building strategies would work?

Widgets like Facebook Like and AddThis - Any Negative SEO?
I could go widget crazy with my website, there are so many cool buttons and linking this and likes and etc. There's one that is used a lot, called "Addthis" that adds a series of small icons to share a page via facebook, twitter, etc. The javascript looks innocent enough, but there's a link, and who knows what google makes of it. Then there are the dozen or so Facebook widgets - are they safe to use without negative SEO consequences? Does anyone know of any other pitfalls with using the numerous addons offered free to enhance your site? Thanks for any wisdom out there! Jean
