Link Building for a Newbie!
-
Hi Guys & Girls.
Following my previous question, I seem to really be getting to grips with SEOmoz and all its features which seem fantastic.
As mentioned before, I am quite new to this SEO game and learning all the time!!
Through all my reading and learning over the last week I have learnt that Link Building is one of the most powerful ways of increasing your SEO game.
I'm really trying to get my head around it all. I have come across things like "Link Farming" which seems to be a big no no in terms of Google. Submitting to Link directories etc etc.
Now for somebody new, this all comes across quite confusing.
Can anybody out there provide me with a really simple but informative way to effectively Link Build? Best practices etc etc!
I really want to learn and "up" my game!
The website that I am working with is http://www.advanced-incar.co.uk
Many thanks,
Tim

Hi Anthony,
Thanks for the advice.
We do work with quite a few brands and manufacturers both in the actual products we sell and install (Parrot / Fiscon etc etc). We then work for dealers near to us (Audi / VW / BMW).

Hi Tim
There are many effective strategies you can do for increasing your site ranking and visitors, you have discussed about the link farming it is exchanging reciprocal links with website. i have suggest some simplest points which will be helpful for you in building Penguin-Friendly links:
Since Google launched their penguin updates so millions of website have been falling down it's ranking.

Get more social presence, social signals are more important than ever , if you post new blog post then share it in Google+, facebook fan-page or on twitter
-
Link to your inner page : I see lot of people doing link building on their home page. Google will show red flag if bulk of back links are point to your home page, so internal linking is best solution.
-
Do variation of keywords and brand building: If you use only one keywords then it would be over optimized.
-
Focus on quality not quantity: Give fresh and natural link so it will surely rise your keyword position.
-
And make sure you are producing link-worthy content

This is a great site that has a good road map for link buiding:

All great answers for sure ...
Don't forget this resource right here on Seomoz itself,
Have a look through to see which ones may relate to and be beneficial to your company.

Hi Tim-
The first step I would recommend is trying to leverage all of your existing relationships.
Does your company work with a variety of other vendors, brand or manufacturers? The people you do business with are great prospects for acquiring a link.
Then- I would spend some time finding places online where your website or brand are mentioned but not linked to. Contact the website that mentioned you and kindly ask them to turn it into a link.
These are two great tactics that will get you started generating high-quality, natural links. Link building is tough and can often result in people stooping to risky tactics. Best of luck.

Hi Tim,
I'm in a similar boat to you with the unsurity of decent and ethical backlink profiles. From what I can gather from research and experience, the initial idea of backlinking has changed dramatically. Originally you could literally produce blogs, forum signatures, press releases, articles, social bookmarks and generally any type of link (spammy or not) and see some form of benefit in your rankings. However google have upped their game and since the Panda and more recent Penguin update, the backlink world has become ever so harder to understand.
To answer your question, most SEO'ers would suggest researching your high ranking competitors backlinks and basically high-jacking them (in a nice way). I would suggest doing the same:
1. brainstorm what you believe to be your prime keywords (car gadgets, satnavs, parking sensors etc.)
2. Use Googles keyword tool to see what the local and worldwide searches are like ( http://goo.gl/ah50 )
3. Pick the keywords with the most searches (and least competition if there are any) and search the keywords in google (best to use private browsing to ensure you get true results and not tailored to your search habits)
4. Use a backlink tool on the websites that appear on the 1st page for that keyword (sorry but I cant remember any of the tools off the top of my head, but their's quite a few out there, some are add-ons for Google Chrome or Firefox) to research where they are getting their backlinks from.
5. Approach the websites and inquire if you can also have a backlink from them (some will be directorys that you may be able to submit to for free or for a fee, whilst some may be unobtainable (newspaper articles etc.)Also you may want to submit your website to the free DMOZ directory, but please note it can take a long time for the submittion to become active, if at all.
Hope that makes sense and helps. Please dont shoot me down if anyone disagrees, just adding my contribution/opinion
Best of luck and nice website.

Link building for a 'boring' eCommerce site
Hey all, I'm in need of some serious inspiration and I'm hoping one of you generous people can help. We're looking to do a spot of link building for an eCommerce site which I would describe (without putting it down too much) as 'boring'. This isn't our fault per se as the site sells printer cartridges and there's only a certain amount of excitement such a product can create. As a result natural linkbuilding is quite tricky, especially when it comes to creating links to anything other than our homepage. For the past couple of years we have focused on creating good content and indeed have a thriving database of hundreds of helpful articles and videos on the site. These are generating decent traffic (and rank #1 for many different help related search terms) but the problem with these articles is that they don’t convert in to sales at all well. I’m also conscious that it will ultimately end in us developing a link profile which would classify us as a printer repair resource rather than cartridge sales website. I have read numerous guides on Moz but they all tend to focus on products which are a little sexier than those that we sell. Getting someone to share and link to a truly unique product would be incredibly easy compared with asking someone to engage, share and link to the latest Epson cartridge. I started writing articles on some decent quality business blogs however the links given don’t look particularly natural and the link would always be to our homepage. We have the staff and the time but we built a whole host of rubbish links back before Penguin and I want to ensure that we are going to head in the right direction before embarking on something new. If you had a site which was really dull how would you devise a link building strategy that was relevant and, most importantly, natural? Thanks for your help. Chris

Build links to home page or internal to rank internal pages?
I understand that naturally people link to the home page and internal pages - probably the home page more often than not. In order to build a natural looking link profile I also understand that I need a variety of anchor text, brand and url links. Should I be building links mainly to the home page with only a few to internal pages? Ultimately I want my internal pages to rank for specific terms so in my head it makes sense to concentrate my link building effort to internal pages but that would seem unnatural to google I'm sure. For arguments sake if I only built links to the home page with a mix of the anchor texts described above would these internal pages rank eventually anyway as 'link juice' flows throughout the site? Or is it an absolute must to build some links to internal pages. Could a page rank for a keyword without having any links to the site with the keyword anchor text (simply url links) based on the page title/content? Also what is a good ratio of home page to internal links? I would assume around 10:1? A lot of questions I know but I'm confused as to what will be the best strategy.

Are PR releases good for Link Building?
I'm having a bit of a conundrum with Press Releases: I recently sent a press release on PRWeb (which I personally think is just "average" compared to others as it focuses mainly on the CBS network and is not focused at all unless you pay for an expensive release) and got over 100 incoming links from high PR news sites (according to Webmaster Tools) but these links had PRWeb in subtitle, so for all I know these were syndicated releases and not "Pick up By" as PRWeb reports. Will this affect Page Rank value or rankings for any keywords? Are these links treated only as temporary links or permanent back links? (I know sometimes they appear in Google News or Yahoo News, but disappear the next day) Was it valuable to the company? Our business is in health sector exclusively on East Coast U.S. and the release was seen all over the world and not one of the links coming back was from a health-related section. They were high rank online sites, but is there value in such links? added 11/30: I was reviewing competitors' link backs I found they did a lot of press releases and gained a high-level link back from each one. These were the best/highest-authority links they had. The syndicated releases were not even listed anywhere. And then I reviewed their SERPs... and guess what, their ranks increased with each one. (So I don't think "duplication" is an issue. If anything only the syndicated copies were penalized, but not the original one)

Link building tools/sites
I am looking for a way to share my content in multiple locations to build back links without having to upload one at a time per location. For example- if i write an article and i upload it to ezine articles and then post it over on my blog- it will then post over on my twitter and facebook and linked in. However- how i can also get this article with back links into shared sites, bookmark sites, and other locations online to help build my inbound marketing for back links. I'm trying to find a way to save time while building out the links.
