Our site is showing up #1 for most terms with a blended local listing, but no longer in the organic listings
-
...after some SEO updates were made. While I am ecstatic about a #1 local listing, I am concerned that we aren't getting that second organic listing on even the top 50 results!
Besides improving the content and SEO on the inner pages with the hopes to get them to rank, does anyone have any suggestions for what we are doing wrong?
We (dm-remodel.com) are ranking well for things like "ann arbor kitchen remodeling" and "ann arbor bathroom remodeling"
Thank you very much for any help!!

Hi Megan, You are not alone in being puzzled by this. Here is what has happened. You have not lost your organic rankings - they have been subsumed in your blended/local ranking. If you look closely at your listing, you will most likely see how it is a blended listing. Some elements connect directly to your website - whereas others are going to 3rd party data, such as a Google+ Local page.
So, your previous organic strengths have helped you in attaining this highly desirable blended/local result. Way to go! In times past, it was common for dominant businesses to be able to achieve both a local pack listing and an organic one (or even a couple of organic ones) on the same page of the SERPs. This is no longer typical, and most businesses will have either a blended/local listing or an organic one - but not both.
Even if you were the only bathroom remodeler in Ann Arbor, chances are that you would get a blended/local listing for your business and that other spots on the page might be made up of a few of your citation sources (such as your Yelp profile) and that Google might pull in other stuff from further away (sometimes in really wonky ways such as showing an auto dealership for a search for a plant nursery!). It would be uncommon these days for you also to have internal local pages linked to from your site, beyond that blended/local listing. Not saying it never happens - it's just really uncommon.
You should feel really good about your achievements, and to make you feel a little better, check out Dr. Pete's super post on heatmap studies for local listings:
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/eyetracking-google-serps
In that post, you will see how eyes are often drawn to the local listings, rather than the organic ones. So, things are going well for you! Congratulations!

Carousel bumped us out of our local ranking
Nearly every post I've seen on Carousel states that "the rankings basically stay the same" but that hasn't been the case for one of my hospitality sites. The site went from being in the top 3 of local listings but when Carousel hit the site got bumped. We have high quality images, reviews, citations...we even added some newer, better photos but aside from that I'm a bit stumped as to what steps to take next. Anyone else get bumped by Carousel or have thoughts on any other factors which I might be missing out on?

Tips for local link building?
Hello Mozzers, Working on a site that has locations around the country and is targeting words like "city name+long tail keyword". They're fairly well optimized on-site, so we're working on recommending localized content but could use some advice for link building. Beyond Google places, what have you guys seen that works?

What is the best way to host a video on my site from a SEO perspective?
Hi, we are in the process of creating a video about a topic that is highly relevant for our customers. Once it is completed we want to offer the video to our customers so that they can embed it into their own websites for free. What is the best way to do this and still receive maximum SEO juice? If we use a a video service like youtube or vimeo, then the link will go to vimeo or youtube and not our site. One thing we are thinking about is asking our customers to link to our site in return for embedding the video, but if there is an automatic solution then this would be a lot better. Any tips will be highly appreciated! If you have anyother tips regarding video content then the same of course! Many thanks! Daan

How many local citations directory listings are recommended to obtain a month?
Hi, I am interested to hear what others recommend for the amount of local references & citations to obtain a month. For example, have you found it is better to get listed in SEOMoz's top 50 Local Business Citation Directories over a 30 day period, or is it the same if you registered on all of them in 1-2 days. What about larger numbers, registering on 100 national local citation websites, 50 industry related websites, and 15 city related sites. Have you found any large negative ranking effects on registering on all of them for your clients in say a 10-20 period rather than stretching out the registration process over say 3 months.. Jeff

UBL or LocalEZE? Local listing submission vendor.
We are between UBL and LocalEZE for our preferred local listing submission vendor. DIfferences:
Image & Video Optimization | | qlkasdjfw
*UBL does not have a relationship with local data vendors, but submits to axicom and infousa (as examples) which LocalEZE does not.
*LocalEZE has active feeds set up with many local vendors. What are your preferences? We are leaning twoard LocalEZE, Razorfish (the agency) is among their notable clients. What about submitting to both? I would be fearful that the data will overlap.0 -
Local search optimization for national product?
Hi all, My company sells a direct-to-consumer product nationwide. We have competitors that sell through local distributors. Therefore, many customers think that this is a product that must be bought locally. Because so many people search for this product locally, we want to be able to rank for local searches. But, because we sell nationwide, we don't have localized content. We have a competitor that created a page for each state which lists every zip code and city name in the state, but that seems pretty labor intensive (and not all that effective). Any ideas on how to address this problem would be much appreciated. Thanks!
