Safe percentage of sitewide links?

I've read that following the Penguin update, too many sitewide links can be a risk.
What percentage of your linking domains are sitewide? What is a good percentage to aim for?

It has been a long time strategy of ours to remove ANY site that is linking to us sitewide. Email the webmaster and ask him to make your link a homepage only link. Sitewides are discounted at best and penalized at worst so I would recommend removing all of them when you come across them.
They usually come in form of a blogroll link which has been a bad method of link building for many years, and your sitewide link is lumped in with other sites in the blogroll who all have sitewides as well, so their chances of getting penalized are greater too. Then you will be listed sitewide with a penalized domain which is linked sitewide. So now you share a more similar link profile having thousands of links on the same page with a penalizes site or sites. AND you have thousands of links with the same anchor text. It just bad all around.

I agree with eyepaq. There is no recipe for success. It varies on case to case basis.
Think about questions like:
1. How old are those sitewide links ?
2. How many of those sitewide links are somehow related to each other ?
3. How good / natural is the rest of your link profile ?
4. Are the links related ?
5. Are those sitewide links around specific anchor text ?
The answers to these questions should lead you to come up with an opinion. Go with what makes sense.
Too many of any one kinds of links is a problem. Don't overdo anything.

There is no recipe for it but overall it has to make sense. If most of the links are site wide for sure that's not a natural link profile.
I would keep them around or bellow 10% if possibile, as long as the rest are natural. If the rest of the links are un-natural then the ratio is point less anyway.
Again, I use as a threshold the 10% but there is no magic number. Depending on the site (niche) some can even go higher as for some websites it make sense for people to link site wide.

Gathering links
There are numerous "Ultimate Guides" to linkbuilding, outreach, etc., and they are all written to teach you the art of linkbuilding. The only thing these guides don't tell you is that following them takes a massive amount of time and doesn't guarantee to get good links at all. We're all in online marketing, and maybe we online marketeers are familiar with linking to other websites, posts that we like, etc. and maybe that's why we can write these guides but in other niches it really doesn't work that way 🙂 I'm wondering what techniques/tactics/strategies you guys are using in less straightforward niches to get quality links to your blogposts. To give you an idea, we launched an article a couple of weeks ago targeting a very competitive keyword. The article got shared over 100 times on LinkedIn/Twitter/etc. and already ranking pretty good, but REAL backlinks are still missing. How to get people to link to that article?

Link Building
I'm having difficulty creating a solid link base. I would prefer to only have links that are on relevant sites that are likely to drive traffic rather then just adding my company page to site directories. I've checked out the whiteboard Friday edition of link building and have also used the new Moz analytics that helps recommend sites to link to, but all the recommendations were directories. So, could anyone hold my hand and guide me through the world of Link building? Your help, as always, is much appreciated. Thanks everyone Dave

Internal linking on my webpages
When I create internal links on my website should I use the keyword or at least a related keyword ( synonym ) every time... I am asking because on my website it is hard to create links from one sub section to another subsection linking with a anchor text that relates to the other category. For example in the travel industry it is hard to have a page that talks about Florida and on the page find a way to link the keywords, California , NY and Missouri ( other than listing those next to each other ... ) as they do not belong to my content about Florida but are all different states listed in my " states category " If I link the words next to each other in the page Florida, such as "you should also check California, NY, Missouri etc... " does it carry any value doing that or does it need to be surrounded by text that is related ? Or is it better to list it in a menu on the right or left side on my page ? ( which one caries more value ) Or if I have the word beach in my Florida page and link it to California is it better even though the user doesn't know what he or she is going to find by clicking on beach ? Which is better - A) links from multiple IP addresses, or B) Links with more associated social signals?
If you had to choose: A) 100 links contained in posts on 100 PR2* blogs, all on separate IP addresses, where none of the posts had associated social signals, or B) 100 links contained in posts within a single PR2* blog (single IP address), where each of the posts had 20 associated social signals, Which would you choose to increase your SERP performance? *I chose PR2 so that PageRank would not be a factor in the decision.

For a new site, does it matter which sites I get back links from first? I.e., are the first back links more important than later ones?
I've heard that when a site is new, the sources from which it gets its first back links are very important -- that the early links are more important for ranking than later links. Is this true. If so, what would be some good places to get these very first links? Thanks.

Hi there, I have been guest posting on blogs trying to build some back-links into my website, which so far is going not too bad, however I was wondering when writing these guest posts should I limit my post to let's say 2 back-links per guest post? If 2 back-links are going to different pages on my website, does the first back-links in the guest post have more value than the 2nd back-link? Kind Regards,
