What are the differences between Google SEO and Bing SEO?
-
I came across this question on why the poster's rankings in Bing/Yahoo were so much lower than his rankings in Google. One of the links responded with was a presentation Rand gave about the difference in ranking elements of Google and Bing.
My purpose for looking into this is to boost rankings in Bing to be more in line with my Google rankings. My takeaways from Rand's presentation were that Bing likes shorter URLs than Google and it's better to have more links from more root domains with more precise anchor text.
Unfortunately this presentation was given at last year's SMX Advanced and is almost a year old. Since then Microsoft has been accused of basically scraping the Google SERPs and Google unleashed at least two maybe three rabid Pandas. Needless to say the environment has changed.
So my question is for those people who are happy with how they rank in Bing: What SEO factors are you seeing make a bigger impact in Bing vs. how they impact your Google rankings?

winner, winner, chicken dinner. Interesting article. Anyone have experience testing these? Bing/Yahoo can definitely be worth it to my sites & clients if the keywords are broad enough. I've also noticed how my Google & bing/yahoo results only have loose correlation. Interesting to see if I can boost bing w/o trashing G results

Here's a little somethin' of what I'm lookin' for...

I can speak for New Zealand. Google dominates 90% of SE traffic. The rest scrap it out after that.
-
It's interesting to note that not all of the percentage points Google is losing are going to Bing and Yahoo. Hmm...
-
Ah okay... I guess you never know what could happen... Microsoft are pretty wiley lol
Found this for the UK: http://theeword.co.uk/seo-manchester/google_retains_top_spot.html
Looks like it's still hovering around the 90% mark to the big G over here.

Bing has gone from about 25% in December to 30% in March here in the States. Google is still on top but with Bing gaining as much as it is anything that helps there will bring incremental results... which is my reason for starting this discussion!

Ranking well on Bing and Yahoo has in the recent past brought us next to nothing... I know I'm still meant to try for all but I only really focus on Google now. Like you said Barry, in the UK pretty much everyone uses Google... yeah what are the latest figures? I know it was well over 90% a while ago.

I'd take a "Good for Google AND Bing" approach and focus on getting links from a more diverse set of root domains as that will hep rankings in both. Shortening your URLs may help, but it's also going to require changing your site, redirection, canonization, and all the things that go with that. If you have any advertising data via Bing, that can also help you with some content creation that may do better there (in terms of conversion). Again, even on my sites that should be better tailored to the niche's Bing has been growing in, Google is delivering the lion's share of traffic, like 20 to 1.

Interesting. I need to watch that presentation. I'm wondering if the shorter url thing is significant. My urls are long and I don't do well at all in BING.
-
I'm going to hijack your question a little bit, sorry, but I was wondering what sort of people are getting traffic through Bing to make it worthwhile?
I've been first in Bing and some local Yahoo sites and still get negligible traffic versus being anywhere on page 1 in Google.
Actually, scratch that. I guess US facing companies where Bing has a bigger share as opposed to my Europe facing operations
Anybody got the latest figures on search engine share by territory?

SEO For sub locations for specific services
Hey Guys, I am currently creating a website for my business that will be marketing through SEO very heavily. I Live in NYC, and i'd like to rank up for the individual locations such as Queens, Brooklyn, Long Island and eventually if my domain authority and other long hall metrics kick in NYC. What I find very tiring is targeting these locations all separately, it means I need to create the same site 4 times with completely different and unique content. Should this setup work for me, and is there a risk that Google will see 4 web design pages, and basically say even though the content is unique your ranking up for web design with a location too many times? from my understanding this is not a problem now, but is this a future risk? It also becomes extremely difficult for site navigation with about us pages, contact us pages, and other pages that either have to be duplicated or all pages shown on sidebar for navigation. Please share your thoughts with me, THANKS!!!

Google "In-Depth Article" Question
Google started featuring "In-Depth Articles" a few days ago. You can read about them here and here. I have two questions about them... If you already hold a great position in the SERPs. Let's say your existing article ranks at #2 or #3. If that article becomes one of the "In-Depth Articles", will it disappear from the #2 or #3 position? I have lots of content that I could mark as an In-Depth Article, but I don't want to do that if it will pull me out of a hard-earned SERP position. Has anyone seen "In-Depth Articles" that do not have the Schema markup? Thanks!

Am I the only one experiencing this Google SERP problem?
I perform Google searches every single day, sometimes several times in a day. These searches have nothing to do with being a marketer--they're simply as a consumer, researcher, person who needs a question answered, or in other words: a typical person. For about the past month or so, I have been unsuccessful at finding what I'm looking for on the first try EVERY SINGLE TIME. Yes, I mean it--every single time. I'm left either going all the way to the third page, clicking dozens of results and retuning to the SERPs, or having to start over with a differently worded query. This is far too often to be a coincidence. Has this been happening to anymore else? I know there was a recent significant algorithm update, right? I always look at algorithm updates through the eyes of an SEO, but I'm currently looking at it through the eyes for an average searcher, and I'm frustrated! It's been like trying to find something on Bing!

SEO Budgets, the million dollar question???
Hi All, I am currently looking to revamp my SEO strategy inline with Google's latest Panda and Penguin updates, and looking to appoint a new agency. With SEO changing so much over the years and so many players in the marketplace quoting all sorts, I simply need to determine the kind of money I need to be spending on my SEO, 2) what i should be getting for the money, or different budget levels what I need to be focusing on in priority order, a top ten in sorts Should i be looking to increase or decrease my spend over the long term. I am only a small business with a turnover of about 50 - 80k and need to really cement my strategy so it work long term but also shows a steady return. I have one guy quoting $99 a month, one £250 and one £750, you can probably see my problem. Thanks in advance.

Can visitors duration time affect Google Rankings?
Does the time a person stays on a website affect Search Rankings? If so, could the lower time from Adwords Visitors be effecting organic rankings? And the same for bounce rate. If Non-Paid Search Traffic Avg. Visit Duration time is 3:55 and Paid Search Traffic Avg. Visit Duration is 1:59 Could the low duration time be affecting our website rankings?

Google SERP UI in December
For retailers (or commercial queries), it seems like PPC ads, product ads and google shopping links were allocated more pixel real estate in December than in previous years, and the amount of pixel real estate allocated to organic listings declined further. I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge on when these changes were rolled out.

Why bing is not indexing our website?
We are up almost a six month already, google indexed 46,900 pages. We have decent traffic and a lot of real external links to us. No single page has been indexed by bing or yahoo. I have submitted sitemap to bing's webmaster tool two weeks ago and still it is in Pending stage. here is our address: www.showme.com and here is site map: http://www.showme.com/sitemapxml.php What can be the reason of that? Thanks for your help. Karen Bdoyan

Google +1 link on Domain or Page?
Since its release, I've seen Google +1 being used across an entire domain but only reference the root href in the code snippet. At the same time, you see other sites use +1 more naturally with the button being specific to the page you're on. What's your take on this? To clarfiy, do you add: or .. on each page.
