How about a discussion on Penguin 2.0?
-
Penguin 2.0 was officially released today. I'm sure we've all seen Matt's video.
http://searchengineland.com/penguin-4-with-penguin-2-0-generation-spam-fighting-is-now-live-160544
Ideas for building sharable, linkable content? New strategies? What to avoid, what not to do, etc?
Let's get a discussion going!
-
Amazing ..... this huge update (from what I read on other sites and listening to Matt) and almost nothing here on SEOMoz.....What is up with that.
-
Good point Maria. Google will be pretty unstable for the first little while. It's better to keep calm and carry on with good content
-
Daniel,
To your first point -- for my main keywords (which according to Google have been commercial in intent for the last few years -- i.e. the kw queries bring up only retail options) are now showing reviews from authoritative/journalistic sites. So for instance, "Men's Jeans" might have used to bring up all retail stores, now it might bring 8 stores (plus ads) and 1 or 2 "Men's Jeans" reviews from GQ or something to that effect.
But having said that, I started noticing this about a week ago...

Google penguin 2.0 rolled out today!
I saw many some changes on Google. -
A few observations from the many keywords and sites I monitor:
1. A lot of what I track is in reviews of various products. I've seen a big jump for Consumer Reports. In many instances they now have two listings and they are higher than where their one previously was. Anyone else seeing this?
2. I'm seeing a lot of new sites I haven't seen before, especially after the first page. In the top 20 of one of my main keywords there are 4 new domains that have never been there before...nor should they be. Horrible sites. One of them is [extremelylongkeyword2013] (dot) blogspot.com. It's pretty nuts to see that.
3. In every search, whether searching for the product or reviews of the product, sears, amazon and walmart are almost always the top three in some order. I'm even seeing Wikipedia higher than ever. This is a shuffle from what used to be.
4. I'm seeing a lot more about.com results than I did before.
5. I have noticed News results on almost every search, many unwarranted. Often the news results are appearing after the top 10.
6. No major shakeups on any of my own sites. Little bit of shuffling, some up, some down, but nothing major. Biggest winners I am seeing are consumer reports, sears, amazon and walmart.
-
I find that the first few weeks after an update the SEO world is awash with dangerous speculation. I'm excited to see some real data on sites that have recovered. Until then I'm going to try to avoid speculating.
-
To me it looks like larger authority sites are ranking better. I had a few top position drop to under position 5-10 (I deal with mainly local niches), and now see larger websites although not as relevant as mine doing better imo.
-
I'm with Jesse -- it will take a bit before we can tell anything conclusive, but I'll watch my site, and if I notice anything I will report and add to the discussion. I don't think it will be anything unexpected if you have been following what Google says and watching the trends within your markets for the past few weeks/months.
But we will see...
-
Will probably be awhile before we know anything concrete but my guess would be the same strategies of 1.0 apply toward 2.0. I'd imagine they just widened the umbrella, so to speak.
We'll see! I've got a close eye on a few sites I'm curious to see what will happen to...

2 pages competing
Hi all, My website currently has 2 pages that address the theme 'property investment in manchester' or 'buy to let manchester'. https://www.knightknox.com/developments/manchester/ https://www.knightknox.com/investments/manchester I am a bit concerned that we are competing against ourselves for these keywords. In my opinion the /investments page provides better content, but the /developments page ranks higher in Google. What do you think would be the best course of action?: Leave as is Merge the contents of both pages Redirect the /developments to /investments Or something else? Any ideas welcome. Thanks

Is Canonical Tags a Good Option With 2 Similar Sites?
I have an existing ecommerce site, on a Yahoo platform. I have recently started a different site on the Magento platform with substantially/almost entirely the same products and categories. For various reasons, I won't be ready to do a 301 redirect to the new domain for about another 8 months. I have 4 questions: Is it a good idea to use canonical tags in the meantime? Is there a way to know if the is cannibalization between the sites? They rank for different keywords. Will I lose all traffic and rankings for the Yahoo site if I go the canonical route? If I remove the canonical tags at a later point, will the ranking and traffic of the Yahoo site come back? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Starting over after a Penguin Penalty
Hi, Has anyone tried starting a new domain after being hit with a Penguin penalty? I'm considering the approach outlined here: https://searchenginewatch.com/sew/how-to/2384644/can-you-safely-redirect-users-from-a-penguin-hit-site-to-a-new-domain. In a nutshell, de-index the OLD site completely via Google's Removal Tool, and then relaunch old content under new domain. This seems to have merit, unless Google keeps a hidden cache of content (or uses other sources like Wayback Machine). My concern is doing the above listed approach, but Google still passes the old links to the new domain. We have great content, but too much spam (despite me removing a lot of the links + disavow). Any feedback based on experience would be appreciated. Thanks.

Recent Penguin Update
Hi SEOMoz, Today www.carrentalbuddy.com.au was hit pretty big by the Penguin 2.0 update (I believe). We had some pretty strong rankings for multiple search terms and we believe we have done everything by the book for Google. We can't seem to figure out why our rankings have dropped so dramatically recently and was hoping that some SEOMoz's could take a quick look to help us fix this problem. Kindest Regards, Chris

Can't seem to get traffic back post Panda / Penguin. WHY?
I have done and am doing everything I can think of to bring back lost traffic after the late 2012 updates from google hit us. I just is not working. We had some issues with our out of house web developers which screwed up our site in 2012 and after taking it in house we have Eden doing damage control form months now. We think we have fixed pretty much everything. URL structure filling up with good unique content(under way. Lots still to do) making better category descriptions redesigned homepage. Updated product pages (CMS is holding things back on that part otherwise they would be better. New CMS under construction) started more link building(its a real weak spot on our SEO as far as I can see) audited bad links from dodgy irelavent sites. hired writers to create content and link bait articles. Begun making high quality video's for both YouTube (brand awareness and viral) and on site hosting (link building and conversions) (in the pipeline not online yet). Flattened out site architecture. optimise internal link flow (got this wrong by using nofollows. In the process of thinking of a better way by reducing nun wanted Nav links on page.) i realise its not all done but I have been working ever since the drop in traffic and I'm just seeing no increase at all. I have been asking a few questions on here for the past few days but still can't put my finger on the issue. Am I just impatient and need to wait on the traffic as I am doing all the correct things? Or have I missed something and need to fix it. you anyone would like to have a quick look at my site and see if there is an obvious issue I have missed It would be great as I have been tearing my hair out trying to find the issues with my site. It's www.centralsaddlery.co.uk Criticism would me much appreciated.

How to place two NADs on site (One website, 2 locations)
Hello, For our site: nlpca(dot)com we have 2 locations. One location is based out of a hotel in California, and one location is where we have our offices in Utah. Our site is about both locations, emphisizing California. Do we need to create a Utah page and put the Utah NAD on that page with separate address and phone number? What do we use as an address since we only have a hotel room in California now? What do we need to do to rank for both in the natural and also Places listings? Right now we're #1 for NLP California and #4 for NLP Utah Thanks!

Is the Penguin algorithmic penalty on a page basis or a site basis?
Just wondering if there has been any clarification of whether the Penguin algorithmic penalty is on a Page basis or a Site basis? In other words, is it all or nothing?

Thought provoking discussion on perfect synonym keywords
This is just a general theoretical discussion to provoke some thought. Suppose I have a 2 synonym keywords - which mean identical things. EG - "Golf Holiday" "Golf Break" - probably you can think of better ones, but you get the idea. On the following assumptions: Google knows these synonyms have identical meaning. Google want to provide the searcher with the "best possible result set". By definition there can only be 1 "best possible results set" If the above is true, then Google should produce identical result sets for either of these terms - **So why don't they? **
