Here's my feeling on that: When you say you are targeting "all major categories of product" I (rightly or wrongly) think of an Amazon affiliate-type site. When I think of someone launching an Amazon affiliate-type site and trying to market it, I think the many tens of thousands of other, similar site owners who have underestimated the budget and/or the time they need to do market it correctly. In those cases, 99% of their products remain forever invisible to searchers.
I have to tell you, the fact that your site is about finished and you're just now thinking about marketing isn't giving me the warm fuzzies. The marketing of each product-- individually chosen to be on your site because it fits a need of your target audience and within your marketing--would best have been dealt with prior to the development of your site. If the sell-everything amazon affiliate had thought that way, they may have gotten a handle on how much total time they would be investing in their marketing, as well as how and to whom they'd be marketing them to.
But since you're just getting around to it, for each product, I'd be asking myself, "why this product", "who needs" this product" "when do they need this product", "what is the buyer doing that requires this product" "how difficult will it be to get this product to show up in the search results?", "How long will it take to get this product to show up in the search results?" ,"How profitable is this product", "What's my marketing budget? "When do I need to see an ROI?" and then I'd start tossing products from my site for which I couldn't those questions right off the bat, so that I was at least starting with a core bunch of products I know something about.
If you're not that kind of site, please excuse my rant.

Ok, for me Ecommerce websites are little different than the normal once so I will go step by step of what I will do for the SEO of an ecommerce website that have a target market of India!
1. Local SEO
If you have a physical store as well, then it is always recommended to start with local SEO. Try to include your website and NAP to Google Locals, Yahoo Local and all other yellow pages and data aggregator websites for India.
2. Keyword Mapping
In this step I will divide the keywords in to four different parts that includes
- General Niche related keywords
Category Level Keywords
- Product Level Keywords
- Information related keywords.
Ideally my focus will be to rank for product and category level keywords for all product and categories as usually people who convert usually search for exact product or category related keywords.
Information regarding product usually help in the decision making process so it is important to rank for these keywords and if you provide exactly the information you are looking for then chances are he/she will buy from you!
There is a low but good amount of people who search general keywords to buy any specific product so ranking for these keywords can actually help in increasing traffic to the website and possibly sales.
3. Branding
My 3 step towards the SEO for a website is to build as many branding links as possible. In the ecommerce industry, it’s not about selling one time but you have to build a relationship with a client in such a way that they keep coming back and perchance again and again from the website... in that case it is important to have a good positive brand name across in the inbound channels so that people convert on the brand name instead of product and category related key phrases.
Obviously the list could go on and on as there are several other factors that ideally should be put in consideration but discuss are the most important ones!
Hope that helps!

Site migration 301's list on Apache server - when do I take the old migrated URLs off our 301 list?
Howdy! The site was migrated last year to a new platform, therefore the URLs were migrated over using 301 redirect rules. Since then, the server has a huuuuge list of rules for URLs and I wanted to know when can we start taking these off of the list? And, how can I test to see if they are still indexing, do I simply just add the url to the google search bar? Thanks Guys! Kay

Two months into SEO and I have a few questions. Read on.
Hey Moz Community Basically, I have been suspended from my job in November (with pay) on railway. Since I have nothing to do. I came across SEO, and since then. these past two months I've been addicted! firstly, I read up on how to make money buying and selling exact match domains. I failed miserably! newbie error and I still have around 10 domains in my godaddy account 😕 Anyway, I came across moz and a few other sites i read -backlino & quicksprout. I decided to go down the root of just starting a blog on one of my domains based at the health and fitness niche, the sites alot like bodybuilding.com. So this site and SEO has kind of became my hobby as I learn. I am now a MOZ pro member and have my site on there getting weekly reports. I do alot of keyword research and I try my best to write posts on what I have researched and by using the yoast WP-pluging. I optimize my article/post. this week I had a report back from moz saying one of my keywords are #31 . So i put the term in google and go along to page 5 I think it was and there I see it. My post! yesterday I check again and its on page 3, then i see it on page 4, around a few hours later. it is back on page 5 and today. it is back on page 3?? Can somebody explain why it is doing this? Also, the keyword difficulty was 38% and theres over 3 million results for that term.. so to see it there in the top #51 was a shock, as all I have done is On page SEO. No social shares yet or Links pointing to the page. So does this mean with social shares and Links. this could easily end up on page 1? I have around 5 articles on the site so far.. all are around 1000 words each and are all optimized the same way but are not in the top #51 on google. one post has even had around 60 social shares and even flooded over 3000 visits in 2 days and still isn't ranking?? and My final long question is this.. I train at my gym and have mentioned to a few of the fellas about my new hobby and it's all I talk about. Then a week or two later, I have this Guy tap me on the shoulder as I'm working out and puts his hand out to shake mine. "hi I'm Tim. One of the lads mentioned to me that your learning SEO and your passionate about what you do". Anyway, too cut a massive story short. He told me he owns a catering company over here in the UK and really wants me to put what I'm learning into practice for his company. He's offered me a wage and commission if I start making sales through his site. Thing is I'm still new to all of this.. I said I will look at his site, his products and pick out low competition keywords. See what the keyword difficulty score is on moz, and create a blog - writing posts the same why I do on my fitness site... optimize the post, share through social networks etc, find who links to his competitors and reach out etc for links and do the broken link tactic to. Can you guys give me some advice? as i'm no big seo company. I'm also thinking of spending the next few days digging deep into google adwords and facebook ads. As I think getting traffic this way will also be good to start off with, even if it is paid. I know alot of you guys work or own an SEO company. So can you give me some points or link me to some good information on how I should do this process for my first, should I say Client? I know this Is one big Q&A.. but I'm trying to explain everything. Thanks Again. Carl

SEO as part of University Curricula - real examples
Does anyone know of any universities that offer SEO as part of the curricula? I am currently working on getting SEO into an Argentine University and it would be nice to have precedents. There appears to be demand as you can see here http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=seo%20university yet when you search "SEO university course" or something similar, no name brand universities show up. https://www.google.com/#q=seo%20university%20course. Distilled does. I am interested in hearing people’s opinions on having SEO be taught at universities. Thanks Carla

I changed the {Site Name} of our domain by capitalizing a letter. 48 hours later our SEO rankings are bad. How long does it take to rebound our prior rankings. The {site name} was at the end of every page title.
I changed the {Site Name} of our domain slightly and capitalized a letter. The impact 48 hours later on SEO is really, really bad. How long does it take to recapture our prior rankings and should I change the site name back to the original? The {site name} was at the end of every page title. Thanks for any help/advice on this. We worked so hard to get our business on the first page for many keywords and "POOF" we are gone now.

SEO Ads On Third Party Job Sites?
Hello all, I seriously doubt I will get a reply to this as I'm guessing no one has experience with it. if you do though then I would appreciate any information either via comment or PM. Basically, I need to know how I can improve the rankings of job posts within the third party sites. An example would be totaljobs.com, how can I improve the rankings of advertisements that are posted there or is it simply ranked by date and location?. When I had my eBay business, I did a lot of research on eBay SEO and discovered some important factors for ranking within the eBay website. I'm basically wanting to do the same here on job board websites for job ads posted to them. Their algorithms won't be as advanced as Google etc so I'm guessing if they do they will be open for higher keyword density levels and that kind of thing.. I've googled it quite a bit and can't find any information at all on it. Thanks.
