Are Microsites a good idea
-
I am a plastic surgeon with a website and active blog which has done well over the past 7 years.
I use my blog to feature specific procedures such as Breast Augmentation or Tummy Tuck.
Should I continue to just use my blog to generate traffic or consider a microsite specific to a procedure?
My concern is that google may consider the microsite a black hat technique.

Google won't consider that black hat if you do it right. I am not really a fan of microsites but they do have their advantages. The reason most microsites don't work is because people just duplicate the content from their main blog to their microsite which will be considered duplicate content and it won't rank.
The reason I am against them is because Google has made a transition to ranking brands more and more. If you build a microsite you'll need to SEO that too and ranking them can take some time. Getting high quality, high authority relevant links is hard enough and at what point do you start to dilute your efforts.
I prefer the strategy of categories in my blogs. For instance you could have a category called breast augmentation and one called tummy tuck (www.example.com/breast-augmentation/blog-post-goes-here) This will help keep all of your links on your main domain which will help you build your domain authority and also, people can just follow the categories they care about. Any link to your subpage will help your domain metrics and that is always a good thing. Also, you'll be able to get your main keyword in every URL that way too.
The other side of that is that a microsite could potentially take up another SERP position and therefore help you get more clients. You'll have to double your efforts (if not more) and if you get that authority high enough, any link to your site will help your main site rank better.
But, like I said, I'm not a fan of microsites. I want people to go to my business and help my mains sites metrics. Just my two cents
Darin.

I used to have lots of microsites, then built one big site that beat all of them.
Google search results pit page-against-page with the overall strength of the site also counting towards the rankings. So, it is better to attack with one battleship instead of ten potato guns.

The reason Google may consider them black hat is because they are, they are not recommended. I would recommend you work on creating a better main site that has what the user are looking for. If they are already landing on your site for the mentioned terms then you should be okay. Google's job is to bring up the most relevant results for a search term - make your site the most relevant for that search term.
Don't try to cheat Google, go with Google!
Having said all that I do know of some people with micro sites that can perform but best practice would mean it's not recommended. Good luck.

Finding blog ideas and syndication
We've had our blog for a little under 2 years now using Magento and we've only created 48 posts. As we're in the furniture industry topics are hard to come by and we've become stuck for ideas. Sure we have researched our audience, checked Q&A's and forums to analyse what questions our audience are asking, but the ideas are limited. It's a difficult industry to find niche articles that our audience would be interested in. Could anyone suggest any ideas on how we could find interesting topics that people would actually want to share and maybe our industry influencers would be interested in featuring on their sites, does syndication still work? Duplicate content is a big 'NO NO' for Google but as long as the third party site features a rel=canonical or link back to our original post, Google wouldn't have any problem with this?

My Guest Blog: Still A Good Link Building Resource?
In an effort to build some links, we want to really work on improving our blog content and exposure. We want to write two quality posts per week, and submit 1 quality guest post every 1-2 weeks. However, we're not sure how to go about submitting guest posts or who to submit them to? I found an all article from SEOmoz http://moz.com/blog/4-valuable-link-building-services but it's from 2010. Is myguestblog still a good source? Are there better ways of doing it? Also, is ever advisable to pay to submit a post? Some of the legal blogs (we're a law firm) have this option, but that strikes me as spammy or low quality links. Just to reiterate, we are striving to write high-quality useful content audiences will find beneficial, not just junk or salesmanship. If it takes longer than a week to write posts like that, that's fine. We just really need some specific advise on who we should be submitting our guest posts to and who we should avoid. Thank you all so much for any advice or suggestions, Ruben

Anyone good at ranking on Yahoo?
I don't get Yahoo or Bing these days! I wrote a story "Did David Wineland and Serge Haroche Steal Idea For The Nobel Physics Prize?" It is a unique story, sourced from a prince. It is referenced on many other sites. It has had about 115,000 pageviews so far. most of those people read 2 or 3 pages. Do Yahoo or Bing list my story? No. They list all the referencing sites, they even list unrelated stories on my site that show that headline in the "top ten stories of the day" widget, but not the story itself. It has about 1250 shares. What am I doing wrong? http://buff.ly/WXso4P Is it page structure?

Ideas for Redesigning, Relaunching, and Revitalizing a Community of Bloggers
As a longtime user (now the owner) of a great site that was down a few times over the last couple of years I am looking for advice on how to let the over 100,000 members that have used us know that we are back and now supported fully by a team of people that love the site and what we stand for (quality, curated content and blog carnivals). We did a complete redesign, removed old carnivals, removed inactive users, deleted lower quality carnivals, and fixed some portions of the site that were less than optimal (aka broken). Should we attempt to email everyone, or let them naturally come back? In case it's not clear, we are from BlogCarnival.com.

Is putting introduction to new stories on the front page a good idea
Hi, i am trying to find out if i should be putting all the introduction to new stories on the front page of my magazine www.in2town.co.uk. I am not sure if to just put certain stories on the home page or if it would be better for seo reasons to put everything on the front page for the search engines to pick it up quickly. so for example, all health stories, all news stories and all lifestyle stories that have their own section, should i make sure that they all appear on the home page as an introduction. Or should i have them kept in their own section please do let me know
