Best site structure for SEO
-
Hi,
I'm currently in the process of redesigning/rebuilding a well ranking but a dated looking and structured website.
Using analytics info I'm trying to put togerther an optimied site map plan for the site based on keywords.
Currently the site is structured like this (a few examples) for some of its best ranking keywords / landing pages
www.companyname.co.uk/frames/software/companyname-software/keyword/overview.php
www.companyname.co.uk/frames/software/companyname-software/keyword/keyword.php
I'd like to simplfy this as part of the re build so url's look like this
www.companyname.co.uk/companyname-software/softwarecatogry/keyword
Obviously I would 201 the old urls.
My question is :
A. is this a good idea? (From what I've read it is?)
B. is there any benifit from having the company name repeated in the url (ie www.companyname.co.uk/companyname-software). My thinking before this is that companyname-software currently ranks well and brings a good amount of traffic. Or should I just go with
www.companyname.co.uk/software/softwarecatogry/keyword as opposed to www.companyname.co.uk/companyname-software/softwarecatogry/keyword?
Many thanks in advance!

I agree with not repeating company name, unless it's a different company than in the base url. Try only making those deep links if you absolutely have to! Good luck!

Exactly

I've never used a flat structure before - are there SEO benifits in this?
-
Hi, the only reason I was thinking of repeating the co name is that looking through analytics a lot of our keywords (mainly to do with software) seem to be appended with the company name.
For example - "companyname software".
I suppose the company name is in the domain name anyway...
-
Hi James,
A) you are talking about a 301 redirect (not 201 I suppose) --> you have to do that definitively!
B) I seems to me kind of spammy if the company name is added a 2nd time and additionally the shorter the url the more the people can remind it. I see no advantage of having it twice in the url. -
Repeating the company name is not likly any bemifit, i would use a secondary keyword.
I would also use a flat linking stucture, link all pages from the home page if you can, every other page sould link back to the home page, but not all pages. Obviously you would need to break this rule, but as close as you can keep to it is best.i dont know what technology you are developing the site with, but ASP.MVC is perfect for this sort of url stucture and pumps out very clean code for seo

/frames/ is a useles element in the URL so I would get rid of it, basically your new URL structure shows improvement. You should 301 the pages (not 201, I think you just made a typo).
a: Yes. Google will fairly quickly pick up on the new structure.
b: Don't repeat company name, that would not be helpful to anybody.Good luck!

Problem with getting a site to rank at all
We pushed this Word Press site live about a month ago www.primedraftarchitecture.com. Since then we've been adding regular content, blog posts 3 times a week with social posts on facebook, twitter, G+ and LinkedIn. We also submitted via Moz Local about 3 weeks ago. Yext about two weeks ago and have been adding about 5 listings to small local directories a week. Webmaster tools shows that the site map is valid and the pages of the site are getting indexed and it shows links from 7 sites, mostly directories. I'm just not seeing the site ranking for anything. We're getting zero organic traffic. I though we did a good job not over optimizing the pages. I'm just stymied trying to figure out what's wrong. Usually we push a site live and see at least some low rankings after just a couple of weeks. Can anyone see anything that looks bad or where we've gone wrong?

Someone told me it does but I thought that was old school way of thinking. Any thoughts?

URL best practices
Hi, I have a problem here, I used http://www.vietnamvisacorp.com/faqs.html instead of http://www.vietnamvisacorp.com/faqs. Hence, http://www.vietnamvisacorp.com/faqs will be caused 404 page. My question is should I change from faqs.html to faqs (no .html)? Thanks in advance any advice?

Give me your SEO Review
Hi Mozzers, I've been working on redesigning and revamping this site, http://www.canvaspaintings.com. Their domain and keyword are a match but not ranking #1. Some initial things I feel that needs to be changed are the links on the side and top bar, viewing the on page report, it does have a lot of links on every page. Trying to figure out how to remove them without having the top nav look empty. Previous category descriptions were written by possibly an article spinner or keyword stuffed writer. Need to start building more links, although PR5, it doesn't rank too well. Let me know your opinions and thoughts, I would love to hear them out. TMI!

Sudden Site Rankings Drop
Good day guys, We have been following strict SEO strategies for the past 6 months, all sites have been improving incredibly well, all except one. The site in question is http://bit.ly/IH4pkM . The site is regarding automotive spray booth equipment. We were ranking on the first page for the keyword "spray booth" (which is the most important one), at place #4 for weeks on end. However since half-way last week, the site has been dropped to half-way the second page (#17). There are barely any crawler errors listed for our campaign on SEOMoz. There were several pages of which the meta description was missing, but that has been fixed earlier this week. When it comes to link building, I looked at what the top competitors were doing, and was looking for unique link building opportunities myself. We have received 0 webmaster tools warnings as well. I do not believe we are penalized due to the "penguin" update. After all, if you search for for the company's name in Google, it is still listed on there (# 2). Nor have we been part of dodgy link networks at all. So my question is, what do you guys believe made us drop the rankings? Is there some on-page issues I am overlooking? Any recommendations to restore out previous rankings? Kind Regards, Roderic

How to best use our blog posts for SEO?
My company recently created a WordPress hosted blog. It is hosted completely separate from our company site. The primary domain for the blog is blog.mydomainname.com, but we immediately created a folder within our company website for www.mydomainname.com/blog that has a reverse proxy to the blog itself. I'm curious though if we should consider taking the content from the blog posts and re-creating that within our company website as well? The blog posts are very good SEO rich content, and we always struggle to find new content to put on our company website as it is already. Would like to get some folks thoughts on this. Thanks!

Best way to link to an affiliate site.
I have a site that promotes a single affiliate product. Would it be better to have a "buy" button in the content that goes straight to the external affiliates website or should I send it all to an internal page that redirects thus only having 1 external link to the product site.
