Why is our website ranked lower but beats most competitors in full SERP report?
-
We are analysing why our website ranks so low (currently position 8 in serp). We beat our competitors in most areas. Also we produce by far the most useful content. Do not buy links or do any other malpractice. We have been for a long time ranked in top 3 (well mostly 1-2) positions. In the last year we have seen a decline to position 8-10 and we are not sure why this is the case.
Can anyone suggest what we should be focusing on? We are clueless. All the practices we used to "know" now seem obsolete.

Hello Jane,
You make some really good points here. It is amazing how easy it is to get hung up on one thing or another and miss the real issue. Quality will typically win out every time. I have clients who hire someone to put out a post a day, etc. Focusing on putting out content people want to see or products presented in a way that is not a mirror of everyone else, will always pay dividends. Focusing on business outcomes as opposed to rankings is the other "aha moment"more need to have.
Keep up the great work at Moz, Best,

Hi there,
Just to round off this thread, I would say that Robert is right - often low rankings aren't about what you are doing "wrong" but are about what your competitors have done right that you have not considered. If your SEO practices are out of date (I am guessing here, but things like seeking links from directories, focusing on the minutiae of markup rather than robust site structure and quality, unique content, pushing out small daily "blog" updates that are repetitive rather than writing two or three longer, quality pieces per week, etc.) then your rankings will suffer if your competitors are more up to date.
If you are still seeking links from third party sites with solely "optimised" anchor text (e.g. links saying "Car insurance" pointing to the car insurance page) you can end up with a penalty or poorer rankings as a result, usually at the hands of the Penguin algorithm or a manual action (although if you are still ranking 8th, you do not have a penalty.

Michael - I disagree, if you are doing everything naturally then you don't need to worry about Google updates.
If you are producing, good original content then that people naturally link too then Google isn't going to penalise you. All Google wants to do is rank relevant content to keep people using Google happy and not going to other search engines. Play by their rules and you don't need to worry about future updates.

I experienced the same. Its been since the last penguin update for us. We had no manual actions in google but automated actions are very common. My site was especially effected because i had several sites with similar content from same database. I was forced to streamline down to one site with one database. I also had to disavow links that may no longer be acceptable to Google's new guidelines. Check out authorship and content canonical's on your site, these are very big factors with Penguin. Its frustrating to go from top 10 to below 50 for us. Lost lots of business because of these changes. Just chasing the dragons tail with Google changing the game with every update.

1/ About links : page and domain authority are not all; anchors text match to keyword can make the difference.
2/ About content/text : try to understand regarding the other results what is the expected semantic according to Google. Besides, a length of 2000+ words will help.

Hi Urkeman
I would have to partly agree with Robert, with what are the competition doing that is better what you are doing, but I would also look at the "produce the most useful content" like Robert said that is subjective - have you looked at how much of your great content is generating links to it, it could be as simple as that your competitors are better at using their "less useful content" but getting good quality links to it.
Writing brilliant, amazing unique content is only part of the content strategy you must outreach this content to gain links, mentions traffic to it.
I would maybe look at what links your competitors are getting that you are not.

All the practices we used to "know" now seem obsolete.
If you have used these on your site they may have generated a reduction in your SERPs.
-
Urkeman,
There is no concrete answer for "Why?" Please understand you are not the only one who has ever asked this question. The answers are many, but first I suggest you take a step back and understand that what you or I think is "the most useful content" is very subjective. You may not be doing anything outwardly wrong, "malpractice," but still not doing the best in terms of the algorithm and what result it has calculated based on your site.
Is your content regularly changed up? Is your content relevant to whatever group you are trying to reach? Is your on page SEO great? Are your links high quality even if you have more than the other guy? Is your content DEEP, in other words, more than just a rehash of all the other info on the web.
I decided some time back to look at what the sites ranked ahead of me are doing better as opposed to bothering myself with, "Why are they in that position?"
SEO is something that is done over time and requires a semblance of patience. Take your time, look at any possible changes that improve your site in the eyes of Google, Bing, etc. And if you are relentless, you will move up.
Best,
Robert

I am confused/frustrated/surprised how bad my website is doing on google ranking
Hello, I am confused/frustrated/surprised how bad my website (flyhy.co) is doing on google ranking and I have no clue why even though I have been doing my homework regarding SEO. Just a bit of background, I have created a new website about 6 months ago for the paragliding community, the primary goal is to provide a platform for people to publish their ads (osclass), but also to provide some interesting reviews and tools to help paragliders chose their wing. We have been putting a lot of effort to provide a nice user experience and tio build the tools mentioned above. Our main channel to connect with the community is Facebook, and we have been quite active there. I have looked at many SEO articles and I made sure the website provides a good UX, the URLs are SEO friendly, good meta data, etc. Also have been using the google search console and analytics to monitor all of this. But here is the thing, all these does not seem to change anything in our ranking for important keywords such as "paraglider for sale", "paragliding equipment", etc. We seem to only rank (looking at Google’s keyword tool) for very specific wing model names that people have mentioned in their ads. I have ran out of ideas on how to improve our SEO !!!!!! I know the website is only 6 months old, but by now we should get some results. As an example, I will mention one our main website competitors: www.paraglidingequipment.org. OK the URL is pretty obvious and this website ranks in page #1 for "paragliding equipment" (but also for "paraglider for sale" and other paragliding related key phrases). OK there is the URL (paraglidingequipment.org), but I thought nowadays google bots are smarter than just that. The website is 1 year old (so not really much older than us, and was ranking high anyway even 6 months ago). The website looks like it was clearly made by one person and then quickly just left it running, so no content has been added (except for people putting their ads), there is almost no activity on the Facebook account. I have run some test such as "pagespeed insights" and we both rank the same. On "seositecheckup.com", we are clearly better with more 10 points. Is there anyone out there who can tell me what is going on? Have I missed a very important aspect of SEO? Is our website somehow compromising the robots crawling (although I can see about 80 pages have been already indexed in google search console)? I know content is king, but in paraglidingequipment.org the only content I see are ads, and we have ads and other interesting (ie reviews and tools) for paragliders. To conclude, I am basically completely clueless of what to do to rank at least on the first couple of pages of google for the key phrases above. I need help. Hichem. PS: in Moz bar our score is non existing (PA=1,DA=10), on paraglidingequipment.org (PA=23,DA=15). So it looks that essentially we are not apparent on the web! PSS: We have also tried to build some backlinks on few important paragliding community websites.

How to break into a serp dominated by large companies? (but low keyword difficulty)
I'm currently doing some keyword research, and on favourable keywords such as: "weekend breaks in lake district" (320 searches per month with 39% keyword difficulty), I see that all of the first page SERPS are from larger companies (last minute, centerparcs etc) How likely will it be that I can get on that first page, assuming I am focusing my page on that particular keyword. Sparse info I know, but I didn't want to spend hours going down a dead end street. Is it simply that these larger companies are in the top 10 because there are no specific pages targeting that keyword, or do I have little chance?

How better can we compare with a competitor ?
We were ranking 1st to 5th spot for the keyword, "PSD to Joomla Template" for this page, http://www.qubesys.com/psd-to-joomla-template/ for last 2 years! But since last 6 months, we are getting like 0 traffic to this page and absolutely no leads. We just tried to compare with a ranking competitor who has been on top for last 7-8 months already, www.joomla6teen.com/Convert-PSD-to-Joomla-Template.html I just compared it with my page, http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/comparisons?site=www.joomla6teen.com%2FConvert-PSD-to-Joomla-Template.html&comparisons[0]=http://www.qubesys.com/psd-to-joomla-template/ I see our page wins in PAGE METRICS , but falls in SUB DOMAIN AND ROOT DOMAIN Metrics . Whats that ? How do we know, what all things we need to improve at ?

Ecommerce Website Product Rich Snippet Image
Greetings Mozzers, I'm working on an ecommerce site and my goal is to have the product rich snippets on each of them however, I would like an image to start displaying in the SERPs. Looking for some guidance on this issue. Here is a well phrased questioned I found that sums up my thoughts: Product schema has the "image" attribute, but it is not displayed in rich snippets in SERP. However, there is recipe schema and it allows to show image directly on SERP. It means that we can define two entities on a page (product and recipe, it is allowed) and it should display an image from recipe's part + the rest of information (price, availability) from product's part. I know it is a dirty hack and semantically incorrect, but will it work? If so, would it affect rankings or not? Any other drawbacks? Thank you for any advice/clarification!

How can my site not ranked on easy keyword while it currently ranked 1 on difficult keyword??
The site in question is http://ikt.co.id The site is perfectly optimized (or even over optimized) for keyword "Bikin Website Murah" (in Indonesia it means "develop an affordable website") currently if you search on both google.co.id AND google.com, it ranked on #10 (on google.co.id) and it ranked on #7 (on google.com), and both term only return 1.3 million results I have A LOT OF pages that started with 'bikin website' , or 'website murah' ... there are a lot of them, and i have had a lot of backlinks on those pages too (have been manually building a lot of links, starting from creating a tutorial article and blog submission and many other way) .. the site has been perfectly optimized for that keyword For example we have http://ikt.co.id/blog-category/bikin-website-murah-promo-terbaru.html (for newest promotion) http://ikt.co.id/blog/bikin-website-seo-murah-discount-40-sampai-31-juli-2011.html (for discount 40% promo that lasted untill 31 juli 2011) AND YET, if you search on google.co.id for keyword "2000 likes facebook" , our lone page that i created when our facebook likes reached that amount, RANKED #1!! , and please let me tell you this term return 400 million results++ (on google.com this keyword ranked #19, on 500 million results++). And let me tell you it take that SINGLE page (which has absolutely 0 backlinks) 2 days to ranked #1 .... and her brother if you searched "1000 likes facebook" also show similar result (though not better then the sister) How ?!? and Why ?!? , i dont understand this at all.... my domain does not contain any keyword, they uses the same engine and yet that lone pages which have absolutely no backlink ranked so well on a very competitive keyword, while my Target Keyword ranked poorly.... And what is even more bizzare? "Bikin website murah" might not rank good, but "bikin website" ranked better x_x ... arghh i dont get it... why my site ranked poorly on easy keywords and ranked high on difficult keywords :(( .... Why I am not smiling because those easy keyword is actually my primary keywords 😞
