Meta Description On Categories

Is it really necessary to add a meta description to your categories and admin pages? I don't even have that option with my Genesis platform. When i received my first crawl test, those are the things that stick out as errors...
-
thanks for all the input, but do the search engines really find author pages, tags and admin pages? those are the ones that are showing errors...

Take the time and do it right. Add your "description meta tags".
While it may not directly affect rankings it can indirectly affect rankings. You want the description tag to add a little bait on your hook for the searcher. Google monitors CTRs and therefore having a higher click through because of better description will improve your rankings.

I would agree with EGOL. Custom meta descriptions are important for all pages (at least the main ones if you don't have time for all of them). It's all about user experience and when one of your web pages displays in the SERPs, it's important for users to be able to quickly scan the snippet of what that page is about and if it's what they are searching for. EGOL's right, the more content you control the better from a SEO perspective because you know what keywords your targeting and how your content should be described.

If you don't have a meta description, Google will grab some relevant text from your page and display it instead. I know a couple people who would rather allow google to choose the description, however, I would rather craft it myself in an attempt to elicit clicks.
I don't know anything about Genesis... but if it does not provide for something as important as a description tag I would be wondering what else is missing?

Category URL Pagination where URLs don't change between pages
Hello, I am working on an e-commerce site where there are categories with multiple pages. In order to avoid pagination issues I was thinking of using rel=next and rel=prev and cannonical tags. I noticed a site where the URL doesn't change between pages, so whether you're on page 1,2, or 3 of the same category, the URL doesn't change. Would this be a cleaner way of dealing with pagination?

How can my homepage have 2 meta descriptions?
Hi all, When googling our company, I see our main page pop up with 2 different meta descriptions, depending on the search query. The situation
Technical SEO | | NHA_DistanceLearning
The search query 'nha' (on google.nl) returns the main page with a meta description that looks like a random grab from the code by Google itself, starting with 'Ik volg een cursus bij de NHA...' The search query 'nha.nl' (on google.nl) returns the main page with the proper meta description, starting with 'Aanbieder van thuisstudies met onder meer MBO-opleidingen...'. So yeah, I'd like to have the main page only appear with the proper meta description, the latter one. We did have a redirect issue (duplicate homepages) a few weeks ago and programming fixed it. Could this have something to do with a redirect? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!0 -
We just fixed a Meta refresh, unified our link profile and now our rankings are going crazy
Crazy in a bad way!I am hoping that perhaps some of you have experienced this scenario before and can shed some light on what might be happening. Here is what happened:We recently fixed a meta refresh that was on our site's homepage. It was completely fragmenting our link profile. All of our external links were being counted towards one URL, and our internal links were counting for the other URL. In addition to that, our most authoritative URL, because it was subject to a meta refresh, was not passing any of its authority to our other pages. Here is what happened to our link profile:Total External Links: Before - 2,757 After - **4,311 **Total Internal Links: Befpre - 125 After - 3,221

Total Links: Before - 2,882 After - 7,532Yeah....huge change. Great right? Well, I have been tracking a set of keywords that were ranking from spots 10-30 in Google. There are about 66 keywords in the set. I started tracking them because at MozCon last July Fabio Riccotta suggested that targeting keywords showing up on page 2 or 3 of the results might be easier to improve than terms that were on the bottom of page 1. So, take a look at this. The first column shows where a particular keyword ranked on 11/8 and the second column shows where it is ranking today and the third column shows the change. For obvious reasons I haven't included the keywords.11/8 11/14 Change****10 44 -34

31 53 -22Needless to say, this is exactly the opposite of what I expected to see after fixing the meta refresh problem. I wouldn't think anything of normal fluctuation, but every single one of these keywords moved down, almost consistently 20-25 spots. The further down a keyword was to begin with, it seems the further it dropped. What do you make of this? Could Google be penalizing us because our link profile changed so dramatically in a short period of time? I should say that we have never taken part in spammy link-building schemes, nor have we ever been contacted by Google with any kind of suspicious link warnings. We've been online since 1996 and are an e-commerce site doing #RCS. Thanks all!0 -
Items 1 to 9 of 22484 total in our Meta Description
Our homepage on our ecommerce site has a category as part of the front page. Unfortunately the top of the category says: Items 1 to 9 of 22484 total Is there a way through GWMT or any other method of stopping Google from adding this on to the front of our Meta Description? Or is the only solution to remove it from the page all together?

Do sub-categories and categories behave similarly in WordPress?
Hi, I'm aware of the SEO benefit in category pages and would like to implement them on my (client's) site. Unfortunately, the developer set up the blog where there is one parent category called 'blog' and the rest of the categories are sub-categories, underneath the parent. While it seems like an easy fix, he claims that it's not because of some programmer jargon I can't understand. So my question is, can subcategories offer same or similar value as categories, or do I go head to head with this charming guy?
