Effects of changing your city to overall rankings?
-
One of our offices is in Trinity, Florida. However, "Trinity" isn't a real city. It is essentially the nicer part of New Port Richey. Organically, we rank for new port richey terms, but i have a suspicion, our lack of maps/local presence is hurting us. Should we do a massive citation overhaul and change everything to New Port Richey for that office? Will doing that somehow hurt our site overall?
Thanks,
Ruben

Ruben,
Amber, who heads up Local for us is a master of G maps application for this. Contact me as before and I will get you the directions so you won't have to worry over it.

Quick follow-up, how do I know where google thinks I am? It says Trinity, because I created the map to say trinity. But, (and this is where this area gets more confusing) there is also a city north of New Port Richey called Port Richey. The Port Richey firms rank just as well for New Port Richey searches as the New Port Richey firms do...but none of the trinity ones rank well at all in local search...
Maybe I can look up some addresses in Trinity and see if google makes a distinction between NPR and Trinity or just considers it all NPR? Would that be an indicator?

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to start the process of converting to New Port Richey. The Trinity address depiction certainly isn't helping us, so I might as well try it and see what happens.
Thanks for the insights!

Miriam,
That is truly a great question. At the end of the day, it is somewhat confusing. Where Ruben is, the largest city within 20 miles of him is Tampa, the second largest within about 15 is Clearwater, within 5 or 6 is Palm Harbor, New Port Richey, etc. Trinity is not more than a neighborhood.
In Houston, I have lived in Montrose which is literally a mile from the city center. Does Google see me in Montrose ( a very distinct and well known area of Houston) or do they see me in Houston? My guess here is Houston. For Ruben and the law firm, I doubt there are 2 searches a month on Trinity lawyer or attorney and my guess would be one of those at least was a religious choice He is really better served using New Port Richey. I lived in Tampa and my business was in Clearwater. When he first mentioned Trinity, I had to look it up.
That is why I think (and we both know at best it is an educated guess) New Port Richey would serve him better. My only concern is this: Does Google, by virtue of them claiming Trinity for some X period of time in some way begin to recognize a given area?
Best,

Hey Ruben,
Where does Google think you are? On the map, I mean, are you categorized as Trinity or New Port Richey? Whatever they think is how you should be listing, promoting and optimizing, lest you be at odds with their take on geography. -
Ruben,
Knowing your site and that area, I do not think it will hurt you to be New Port Richey; the question is will it help? I would look at queries using the keyword planner in adwords and see if the query difference is worth the work necessary to change it.

Local pack ranking anomaly -- help?
At a bit of a loss on this one... If anyone has any ideas about what's going on or how to tackle this, I'm all ears. One of my clients, an orthodontist, is appearing in the top three organic positions and in the local pack for almost all keywords we're targeting. However, for the keyword "orthodontist" without any location modifiers attached to it, we're appearing in the top three organic results but our Google listing is not appearing in the local pack. The three listings appearing in the local pack are his next-door competitor, one practice that closed almost a year ago, and a practice in two towns over. He and his competitor are the only two orthodontists in this town, so they should theoretically be the two main listings that are being pulled in. The listing for the closed practice is marked as closed on Google and has been reported to Google several times in the last few months. The listing has no website or reviews on it, although it does have an address and a phone number. We have spent months doing aggressive, in-depth NAP/local listing cleanups. We have 24 Google reviews with an average rating of 4.6 stars, and we're organically gathering reviews every week. We went through a site redesign at the beginning of this year, so we now have a mobile responsive website. We are appearing in the local pack for almost every other keyword that we have high organic rankings for, so we know it isn't necessarily an issue with our Google My Business listing. Does anyone have any ideas of what's going on, or what we can do to get our listing to appear in the local pack for this keyword? The keyword "orthodontist" is the single most important keyword to this client and our strategy, so we're open to any and all suggestions or thoughts.

HomeTesterClub Ranking
Some of our searches are coming on the first page at Google, which is great (these are New Product Watch pages https://hometesterclub.com/au/en/Products/ ) https://www.google.com.au/?gws_rd=ssl#q=Kettle+Popcorn+Salted+Caramel+review https://www.google.com.au/?gws_rd=ssl#q=Coca-Cola+Ginger+review https://www.google.com.au/?gws_rd=ssl#q=Herbert+Adams+review .. and yet some (particularly Home Tested Section https://hometesterclub.com/au/en/HomeTested/ ) have very poor results, ie no where to be found: https://www.google.com.au/?gws_rd=ssl#q=hydralyte+sports+review https://www.google.com.au/?gws_rd=ssl#q=Rafferty%27s+Garden+review https://www.google.com.au/?gws_rd=ssl#q=Purina+Beneful+Medley+review .. we are often either nowhere to be found, even if we have hundreds of reviews for these products… and seem to be often beaten to the punch by the likes of: www.productreview.com.au / www.influenster.com / www.mouthsofmums.com.au do you think that these other sites just have more sites linking to them, and so stronger natural page ranking? Any insight would be helpful..

What's the best way to keep Google My Business reviews when the business changes names?
I work with an interior designer who is re-branding and changing her business name to focus specifically on windows. Can she keep her GMB reviews and just change the name of her business, then reverify with Google? She doesn't want to lose her current local pack ranking.

Will reviews be ranked higher if responded to?
I can't find any up to date information on reviews and whether or not Google pushes up reviews with responses or does the ranking stay the same?

Should I change to new URL after going through a period of bad reviews
A couple of years ago we had a series of bad reviews due to our billing company. We have not been able to recover from this and are unable to appear in Local listings due to the horrible reviews even though they are from years ago. Would it be a good idea to change domains and google+ accounts in order to start over with reviews and local citations?

Google Places - Main Location Change = New Page?
I have my main Google Places / Google+ Local page in Detroit where I've had it for probably 5 years and have 10 5-star reviews. It shows up pretty well in the local listings. I recently moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota and while I'm still doing business in Detroit and have an office location, my main location is now Sioux Falls. I've started a new Google+ page here, but it's not doing very well and I don't have many reviews. Which of the following should I do? 1. Create New Page and Leave the Old page where it is Create a new page for Sioux falls and leave the old page in Detroit. It will take some time to build up the new location profile. 2. Change the Address of the Old Page (Detroit) to my new address in Sioux Falls Could I change the address of the old page (Detroit) to my new address in Sioux Falls, then create a new page for Detroit? This would hopefully have my page with all of the reviews, which has been around for awhile, in my new main location and I could create a new page for Detroit. Does anyone have any experience with this? What do you think would be the best approach?

Dramatic decline in rankings
Hi I'm in need of some advice, one of our clients has had a very sudden and dramatic decline in rankings. On the week commencing 20th Jan, 23 of our keywords declined from pages 1, 2 and 3 of Google out of the top 50. We haven't been carrying out any bad practice SEO, just some on page optimisation so that we achieve A grades with the Moz tool. We have also built 4-5 links in the past 3 months with quality and relevant sites such as biz crowd and industry relevant blogs so I don't see why this would be a problem. I noticed on the Moz Cast that there was some increased algorithm activity on 23rd and 26th Jan which would correlate with this decline in rankings, but our other SEO clients seem to be unaffected - I'd be interested to see if anyone else has been affected by this? I welcome any advice or further insight on this. Thanks in advance.
