Multiple 301 redirects and old site content appearing in Google results

I have found that for some Google searches the old version of the site on a completely different domain is appearing on page one of the results, while the newer site is only on page 3.
The old site is redirecting to the new site with a 301 redirect, however there is also an additional redirect on the new site to force SSL.
Despite this when you view the Google cache of the result that appears in Google the content of the page is still the old site. Is this normal or is Google not following the chain of 301 redirects?
Edit: I just found out that downloading the page by right clicking a link and clicking download rather than viewing it in a browser leads to the old site appearing and the 301 redirect not being followed.

With 4 that is possible, but before you kill everything off, do give my suggestion a whirl to see if that has an impact. However, that also depends on how much of a rush you are in to see a resolution - it could take a little time until Google gets around to resolving it.

I see Andy has also suggested removing via webmaster tools. And he was smart enough to remember fetch as google too! Andy, you rock!

Why redirect twice? I'd redirect to the https version from the old site/pages instead of going through two loops...
Also, did you do the change of address thing in webmaster tools? You can also remove urls from the index through webmaster tools, but I've only ever done this once when our IT guy f-ed up our dns settings so can't really help you much though it was pretty straight-forward if I remember rightly.

Thanks Andy - I know it's difficult without the sites so I appreciate your efforts! We've checked the 301s and are pretty sure they're implemented OK. I suspect that we just have too many of them. 2 or 3 redirects in a chain seems to be OK according to Matt Cutts but we've got 4 and I reckon Google is ignoring them altogether and just indexing the original content.

What I was going to look for was the chain of 301 and make sure there were no errors in how these were implemented.
You could also use Webmaster Tools to suggest removal of old pages, then use Fetch as Google, to help speed up the spidering process.
It's a little awkward without seeing the sites I'm afraid.

Unfortunately I can't post links since we're under a confidentiality agreement with the customer that limits what we can do. Sorry! I know it would be a lot better with URLs but we just can't do it...

SITE STRUCTURE I am trying to optimize the structure of our site Dreamestatehuahin.com. Getting a visible sitemap of my page make me realized it was not a pyramid as I expected it to be but instead very flat. I Would be happy for some advise on how to structure my site in future aswell how to optimize certain place on the page that i think need a change. 1: structure on posts. New site causes massive drop off in ranking, old site restored how long to recover?
Hello, We launched and updated version of our site, mainly design changes and some functionality. 3 days after the launch we vanished from the rankings, previous page one results were now out of the top 100. We have identified some of the issues with the new site and chose to restore the old well ranking site. My question is how long might it take for the ranking to come back, if at all? The drop happened on the third day and the site was restored on the third day. We are now on day 6. Using GWT with have used fetch as Google and resubmitted the site map. Any help would be gladly received. Thanks James

How to know if your site has been penalized by Google

Work was being done on the new site www.clientdomain.com/new (1 month) I think google crawled the /new link and took as a content duplication since both sites had the same content. Is there a MOZ tool to see if a site has been penalized or any online tool? Thanks0 -
Problem with description on Google search results.
A few months ago I changed the description of one of the pages on my site.

Description page is: "Get yourself a personalized name necklace, we offer a huge range of silver, gold and gold plated name necklaces." Bought a site with an old domain where to start?
Hi, I recently purchased the site www.forexnews.com. The domain is more than 10 years old and used to have a ton of content and traffic. A couple of years ago it was purchased by another firm who took down all the old content and made it into a news aggregation site. I am going to try and build the traffic back up by adding back original content and leveraging the domain authority that the site has retained. Besides doing some keyword research, building links, and writing original content is there any advice out there that the community can give me on what else to start with? Any resources that you can point me to which talk about this type of thing would also be appreciated. Thanks Dave

DNS or 301 Website Redirect
We are running a marketplace site, so we have thousands of vendors selling their products on our site. Each vendor has a Profile page and we are soon to launch a premium store-front that is white label. Many of these vendors will want to point a custom url to their premium store-front (which is a sub domain of the marketplace) and we are trying to get an understanding of how we should instruct them to point their url in a way that will give the main marketplace site the seo juice. We also want to understand what will show up in the address bar. Will it be their url or our sub domain? Will any of the marketplace seo juice boost their url local listing status?

Our Site's Content on a Third Party Site--Best Practices?
One of our clients wants to use about 200 of our articles on their site, and they're hoping to get some SEO benefit from using this content. I know standard best practices is to canonicalize their pages to our pages, but then they wouldn't get any benefit--since a canonical tag will effectively de-index the content from their site. Our thoughts so far: add a paragraph of original content to our content link to our site as the original source (to help mitigate the risk of our site getting hit by any penalties) What are your thoughts on this? Do you think adding a paragraph of original content will matter much? Do you think our site will be free of penalty since we were the first place to publish the content and there will be a link back to our site? They are really pushing for not using a canonical--so this isn't an option. What would you do?
