Seasonal keyword tracking locally?
-
I'm managing a project for a local fence contractor in Wisconsin. During Fall, his site was getting a fair amount of traffic. (We only track traffic from the State of Wisconsin and exclude office IPs.) For November, traffic tanked and keywords fell. Is there a way to check the search volume by month to see if the recent extreme cold and early snow are the culprit, (people not searching for fences), or should I be looking elsewhere for a problem?
I know I have to get more pages optimized for ideal keywords but time is extremely tight on this project. (But, that's another problem and story all of itself!)
Thanks!

Another thought would be to look at Google Trends. I did a quick search for fence repair in the US http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=fence+repair&geo=US and over the last several years, winter clearly has a dip in searches. Also interesting is that the southern states have more searches than the northern states in general.

Yup, Linda - I just checked it and as suspected, it is decreasing.

I do see the Adwords data for November is up now, so you can check your keywords.

I agree with you 100%, Miriam, but the client is disagreeing with me. Ugh!!

Hi Janet,
Common sense would definitely suggest that less people are going to be looking for fence contractors in the winter in a snowy place like Wisconsin, and I would expect that the contractors are used to this seasonal flux. Your best bet here would be to look at previous years' analytics to confirm, if the website was hooked up to this in years past, but even without that data, I would bet dollars to doughnuts that this type of fluctuation is completely normal for this time of year in this industry and geography.

One place to look is impression data from Google Webmaster Tools? Hopefully, if you've linked GWMT to Google Analytics, you might also be able to compare to previous year(s). Are you buying keywords on AdWords? You could look at impression data there too.
-
No, I do not know when they update, sorry. (But we are only a few days into December, so they might just not have their data for November compiled quite yet.)
You could try searching a past month where you know it went from being warm to cold and snowy and see what the traffic change looked like then, just to give you a general idea.
-
Thanks Linda - I did try the Keyword Planner before I posted here but it only showed information through October. I'd like to see November. Do you have any idea how often Google updates that information?
-
You can get monthly search volume through Google Adwords Keyword Planner, where you can filter by date range. You can even compare to the previous month or the same month last year. (You have to have an Adwords account, but it doesn't cost anything to get one if you don't already have it.)

Unsolved Getting keywords to rank on new landing pages
I've built new landing pages for a website, and have loaded them with researched keywords in the content, alt image attributes and metas etc - but, after a number of crawls, the keywords are currently being matched to other existing web pages on the website. Does anyone have any advice on 'unlatching' these keywords from these pages, and instead getting them to match with pages that have been optimised for them? Many thanks!

What is considered a keyword score that is too competitive?
I'm researching my keywords trying to strategise content around keywords I can optimise. Most of the high search volume (1000 + searches per month) keywords I want to optimise are in and around 0.5-0.6, is this good? Is this score range considered highly competitive...?

Is it possible to track rank history
I would like to know is it possible to track a keywords past ranking history? We would like to check the ranking history of some potential vendors, but only get data from the point I add them to Alabs, moz etc. Id like to go back a year to see the trend in their rankings. Is this possible and what tool or process can be used to achieve this. Thanks in advance.

Is there a way to pull ALL rankings for a site for a set of keywords?
I'm fairly new to SEOMoz, and am looking for a way to pull all rankings for a site with the keywords I've listed, not just the top ranking. So for instance if my site ranks for the keyword "widget maker in MO" in two spots. The current rank report will only show me the top result. I know I can click on each keyword individually and see a full list of the top 50, but I'm looking for a more automated way of doing this (I'm the only SEO at my agency and time is an issue). I previously used Advanced Web Ranking and the tool would like me pull a CSV of the top 30 sites for each keyword I was tracking and then I could just search for my site and pull those results easier. Anyone know of a shortcut or report I should use? Thanks!

"Rank Tracker Tool" is not agreeing with "Keyword Difficulty Tool"
I usually don't sweat a lot for ranks and such but last couple of days, our rankings have been moving drastically. 'Rank Tracker' shows 1st position for many keywords and the "keyword difficulty tool" shows 2nd and 3rd positions. Is is just me or this is a common thing?

Campaign Manager Keyword Rankings all messed up???
My campaign in SEO Moz Campaign Manager has just ran it's weekly crawl, and all my keyword rankings are messed up. 18 keywords have apparently dropped by massive amounts, but when I do a physical search, they haven't moved. Also Keyword Tracker agrees with the physical search, so why is the Campaign Manager showing the wrong rankings all of a sudden??

SEO Targeting: Ideal monthly keyword search volume?
What's your SEO sweet spot for monthly keyword search volume*? At what volume do you actually expect to see traffic? (I know this depends heavily on competition for said keywords). (*Currently measuring volume via Google AdWords Keyword Tool / SEOmoz keyword difficulty tool. || Comparing exact match and broad match.)
