Best practices or tools for an SEO audit?
-
I would like to have an SEO audit of my site, and I'm looking for something beyond the basics. Prices for an audit seem to vary between free (for DIY tools) to over $3,000. That seems like an awfully big spread.
What are the best practices I should be looking for or best tools to be looking at for a comprehensive SEO audit?

Thanks for your understanding!

Hi There!
I noticed that one of the categories you chose for this thread was Local, so I thought I'd also add a link to a good post here by Casey Meraz, to dig into the Local side of your audit: https://moz.com/blog/ultimate-local-seo-audit
Hope it helps!

Thanks Christy. I wasn't aware of the "strict no solicitation policy." I wasn't looking for solicitations as much as recommendations (but I agree they are awfully similar). I've edited my original question. Cheers.

Hi there, Josh is correct in that we have a strict no solicitation policy for this forum and do not allow job postings (to prevent the forum from becoming, well, more like a job board and less like a discussion forum). Typically, we close questions seeking recommendations for SEO service providers, including agencies and independent consults, and suggest you check out our list of Moz Recommended Companies or post on Inbound.org's job board. But since you are getting some solid advice on what to look for in an SEO audit (and related tools), I am going to leave this thread open for a while. Thanks so much for your understanding.

Hey,
I guess it depends on if you want to carry out the SEO audit yourself. If you do, I would recommend you follow the worlds best SEO audit guide by Steve Webb: https://moz.com/blog/how-to-perform-the-worlds-greatest-seo-audithttps://moz.com/blog/how-to-perform-the-worlds-greatest-seo-audit
This is about 3 years old but is still very useful and guides you step by step.

When you say you want an audit that goes beyond the basics, you're eliminating tools from the equation. All tools have a certain list of things they check, regardless of how big or small or accurate or necessary that list is, it's always operating from a basic list: titles, headers, meta desc, robots & sitemaps, etc. The best one-off for that is Screaming Frog, especially if the site is under 500 pages.
Then you have manual reviews - those usually start from a tool of some sort to get an overview then dig into other things that tools don't pick up. There are no audit tools that will tell you if your 1100 links are good or bad, just that you have 1100 links.
As far as the price spread, it depends even within a company if they're smart enough to do a quick peek at your site before pricing it. I do a LOT of audits and some are 10 page sites, some are 10,000 page sites. If I priced those the same I'd be out of business fast. Size of the site matters. Complexity matters (ecommerce vs portfolio, etc.) and what your goals are matters. I can do a technical audit on a small page in about 20 minutes. A complex audit on a well-developed site could take a week.

Multi location silo seo technique
A physical therapy company has 8 locations in one city and 4 locations in another with plans to expand. I've seen two methods to approach this. The first I feel is sloppy and that is the individual url for each location that points to from the location pages on the main domain. The second is to use the silo technique incorporated with metro scale addition. You have the main domain with the number of silos (individual stores) and each silo has its own content (what they do at each store is pretty much the same). My question is should the focus of each silo, besides making sure there is no duplicate copy, to increase their own hyperlocal outreach? Focus on social, reviews, content curated for the specific location. How would you attack this problem?

Improving SEO with no blog
I have a client who understands the value of content for SEO - however getting them to provide some content has proven an impossible task. I've tried every way to make it easy for them. I've offered to come over to their office myself and see if I can just take 15 minutes of their time and record their answers to a few questions. The response is that's a great idea, we'll set up a time...and no time is ever good. So I've thought, what can I do without them? Unfortunately, their industry is so technical and so niche I'd need to have a law degree to even begin to understand exactly what they do, and as they are in law it's probably better to have no content than content with something even slightly incorrect in it. For now, all I can do is summarize and share news from a government website to their social media accounts. It's not highly effective. Their on-page SEO for the main site is completely optimized. I've placed them in every free listing I can possibly find - both industry and local sites. I have them update me on any local events, conferences and/or trade shows they attend for possible backlinks. What else can I do? I suppose I fear that if I can't provide them any additional results, they will stop seeing the value in SEO services, and I'd have a hard time disagreeing as I can't think of what else to do for them. Thanks for any help!

International SEO Difficulty With Hreflang
Hi, It seems that multilingual sites can be very tricky sometimes. This is the second problem we are facing with a client this month... A company which already has a presence in Spain wants to expand now in Portugal, Brazil and Argentina. There are some linguistic differences between Spain Spanish and Argentina Spanish so we will have a slightly different content but same url (check below) We will also cover the linguistic differences between Portuguese and Brazilian but with different urls, so we will have 4 pages serving the same content in 3 ( technically 4 ) different languages: company.com/idioma -> (original Spain Spanish page - url stays the same.) company.com/es-ar/idioma (Argentina url) company.com/pt-pt/idioma (Portugal url) company.com/pt-br/lingua (Brazil url) Normally we know we should use alternate hreflang to all 4 pages, but now that the url changes, e.g between Argentina and Brazil, the case is the same or we can omit it for these two countries? Thank you!

Can to many 301 redirects damage my Ecommerce Site - SEO Issue
Hello All, I have an eCommerce website doing online hire. We operate from a large number of locations (100 approx) and my 100 or so categories have individual locations pages against them example - Carpet Cleaners (category) www.mysite/hire-carpetcleaners
Local Website Optimization | | PeteC12
carpet cleaner hire Manchester www.mysite/hire-carpetcleaners/Manchester
carpet cleaner hire london
carpet cleaner hire Liverpool patio heater (category)
patio heater hire Manchester
patio heater hire London
patio heater hire Liverpool And so on..... I have unique content for some of these pages but given that my site had 40,000 odd urls, I do have a large amount of thin/duplicate content and it's financially not possible to get unique
content written for every single page for all my locations and categories. Historically, I used to rank very well for these location pages although this year, things have dropped off and recently , I was hit with the Panda 4.0 update which i understand targets thin content. Therefore what I am int he process of doing is reducing the number of locations I want to rank for and have pages for thus allowing me to achieve both a higher percentage of unique content over duplicate/thin content on the whole site and only concerntrate on a handful of locations which I can realistically get unique content written for. My questions are as follows. By reducing the number of locations, my website will currently 301 redirect these location page i have been dropping back to it's parent category.
e.g carpet cleaner hire Liverpool page - Will redirect back to the parent Carpet cleaner hire Page. Given that I have nearly 100 categories to do , this will mean site will generate thousands of 301 redirects when I reduce down to a handful of locations per category. The alternative Is that I can 404 those pages ?... What do yout think I should do ?.. Will it harm me by having so many 301's . It's essentially the same page with a location name in it redirecting back to the parent. Some of these do have unqiue content but most dont ?. My other question is - On a some of these categories with location pages, I currently rank very well for locally although there is no real traffic for these location based keywords (using keyword planner). Shall I bin them or keep them? Lastly , Once I have reduced the number of location pages , I will still have thin content until , I can get the unique content written for them. Should I remove these pages until that point of leave them as it is? It will take a few months
to get all the site with unique content. Once complete, I should be able to reduce my site down from 40,000 odd pages to say 5,000 pages Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks

Merging two pages into one - bad seo done previously

/stop-smoking-hypnotherapy.php
Page authority: 24 and Page 2
/stop-smoking-in-highgate-north-london-radlett-hertfordshire-and-city-of-london.php
Page authority: 13 with 2 internal links only This was probably done to get more local searches to the page but i think it is a bit spamy. Would it be better to 301 page 2 to page 1 or make it as a blog post and keep it alive?0 -

SEO for a homepage... What do you put? Focus on the brand or products?
Hi to all. Ok so I am curious how to format and seo a website homepage? This question is more in the way of dedicated towards how to rank locally if you have multiple services? See I have a construction website and we have many services. So do you try and format the homepage to promote the brand, or do you go after the services? Like would you say hey we are this company we serve here and here, and basically make it an about us page? or do you say hey this is who we are, but say we do this, that, and the other? I am afraid that although I have a webpage for each service, if the main url gets the link juice right now, how should a homepage be? Thank you for any tips or suggestions. Chris
