Local food delivery SEO strategy
-
Hey guys,
I'm working with a new company that doesn't have a brick and mortar storefront, they deliver.
They basically deliver pre packaged smoothies in a VERY localized area (Vancouver, BC). I'm wondering how grandiose their goals should be re ranking for keywords that have non localized authority.
What do I mean?
Lets say their marketing pillars are "health education related to smoothies" "convenient veggies for smoothies" "(insert health benefit here) for smoothies". Should they be trying to compete for these keywords? Or should they really be trying to rank with keywords especially to Vancouver?
Side note: What kind of effect does Country and Locality have on keywords that are generally used by content providers and not service related companies building out an inbound strategy?
Thanks in advance!

Hey Alex,
Exciting to work with a new company! As they are new, I would suggest:
-
For the first X number of months, you focus solely on Vancouver-related content. This would include basic info about the company and its products/services + an on-site blog where you'd start writing about Vancouver-oriented topics relating to your smoothies, health, convenience, customers, etc.
-
Once you've got this rolling well, then, I would say you could perhaps split this 80/20 Vancouver content/national content. So you'd continue to focus largely on Vancouver, but might also write some posts that would be of national interest whether they particularly apply to your city or not. This might be things like 5 best fruits for better skin, 5 best vegetables for better digestion, 5 best smoothies for a chest cold (by the way, the answer here is pineapple/almond milk) etc. These posts, if good enough, could earn wider interest in your brand, and as EGOL mentions, possibly pave the way for future expansion of the business beyond Vancouver.

If there is search volume for these keywords and they can pull traffic from outside the service area of this business, then that traffic can be monetized. All you have to do is to learn to use Google's Double Click ad server and you can show adsense ads to anyone outside of your targeted area and "we deliver a smoothie" ads to everyone in your service area.
If in the future you decide that you want to franchise across Canada, then you can show franchise opportunities ads to Canadian traffic and adsense ads to everyone else. You can also offer to sell them smoothie mixes by mail or blenders or recipes or a million other things.
Lots of websites that sell a product or a service make more money from ads or other forms of secondary revenue than they make from the original product that launched their business.

Hi Alex,
There is certainly some merit in ranking for the more generic terms, it just depends on time/budget and the aim of their SEO.
If they're just looking to drive direct sales, the Vancouver terms are obviously going to be the way to go. If they want to grow their brand strength, spread their reach and ultimately become synonymous with the industry then going for the broader terms is a better option.
One is a low effort, low reward campaign while the other is the exact opposite - which one to choose becomes a business decision for them to make, really. That industry is a gold mine for great, educational content so developing a strategy for the broad terms would be a breeze, it will just be very time consuming to do right.

Need SEO Opinions
SEO Campaign and Best Practices Hello, I have dabbled with MOZ before and I’m coming back with a project that is going to be a marathon. I have a very general question for some of you SEO professionals. I would like to lay out a scenario and I would appreciate any feedback that you can offer. Let’s say I have a client which is an office cleaning company that just services the local Chicago area, let’s call them ABC123 Commercial Cleaners. They have a website that is Example: abc123commercialcleaners.com. On the website it explains all about their services with several different pages. If we want to start a site on another URL, let’s say officecleaningchicago.com will this hurt our online reputation? Or will it make us stronger? Our plan on paper is to target the different localities around Chicago Example:

napervillecommercialcleaners.com
officecleaningchicago.com
evanstonofficecleaning.com I just wanted to get opinions on whether this is a good or bad idea. If it will strengthen or weaken our brand. I hope I have explained a very general scenario (which is completely fictitious) I would appreciate any feedback that you can offer.1 -
SEO Company wants to rebuild site
Hello Community, I am a designer and web developer and I mostly work with squarespace. Squarespace has SEO best practices built into the platform, as well as developer modes for inserting custom code when necessary. I recently built a beautiful website for a Hail Repair Company and referred them to several companies to help them with SEO and paid search. Several of these companies have told this client that in order to do any kind of SEO, they'll need to completely rebuild the site. I've seen some of the sites these companies have built, and they are tacky, over crowded and hard to use. My client is now thinking they need to have their site rebuilt. Is there any merit to this idea? Or are these companies just using the knowledge gap to swindle people into buying more services? The current site is : https://www.denverautohailspecialists.com/ Any advice would be appreciated.

Multiple My Business pages affecting local SEO?
Hey Moz! We have a situation with a dentist firm with multiple doctors at the same address. They have two locations for their dental offices, and each of the dentists operate at both offices. The issue: Each doctor insists on having their own by business page for each location and i'm afraid this is hurting their local SEO. We've been tracking keywords by week and we've seen some big fluctuations in ratings and i'm looking into why this is happening. The office in location 1 has it's own Google My Business page and the three dentists have their own my business page set up at the exact same address. The office in location 2 has it's own Google My Business page as well and the three dentists have their own my business page there also. This leads the two addresses of the main offices having multiple My Business pages at the same address competing against eachother since they are all are registered with similar names and specialties. Could this be hurting our local SEO? Thanks! -Z

Is there an SEO benefit to using tags in WordPress for my blog posts?
We have locations across the US and are trying to develop content so that we rank well for specific keywords on a local level. For instance, "long tail keyword search in state" or "long tail keyword search near 76244", etc. The goal is to develop those content pages via blogs to rank for those keywords. We are using Yoast and will be optimizing each post using that tool. My questions are: 1. Are there any benefits to adding a long list of tags to each post?
Local Website Optimization | | Smart_Start
2. If yes, do I need to limit the number of tags?
3. Do we need to block the indexing of yoast to those tags and categories for duplicate content issues? Any insight on the best way to optimize these blog posts with the use of tags or other avenues would be greatly appreciated.0 -
Schema training/resources for local SEO?
I am currently in the process of apply schema for dozens of clients (many are large retailers). Although I am not a developer, I do know the basics of schematic markup & structured data. I do work with a development team and I'm trying to provide them with schema application best practices. Obviously there are many good articles/blog posts out there about schema. However I'm looking for a more substantial training course, webinar or resource website about schema application. Does anybody have any good recommendations?

Call Tracking, DNI Script & Local SEO
Hi Moz! I've been reading about this a lot more lately - and it doesn't seem like there's exactly a method that Google (or other search engines) would consider to be "best practices". The closest I've come to getting some clarity are these Blumenthals articles - http://blumenthals.com/blog/2013/05/14/a-guide-to-call-tracking-and-local/ & the follow-up piece from CallRail - http://blumenthals.com/blog/2014/11/25/guide-to-using-call-tracking-for-local-search/. Assuming a similar goal of using an existing phone number with a solid foundation in the local search ecosystem, and to create the ability to track how many calls are coming organically (not PPC or other paid platform) to the business directly from the website for an average SMB. For now, let's also assume we're also not interested in screening the calls, or evaluating customer interaction with the staff - I would love to hear from anyone who has implemented the DNI call tracking info for a website. Were there negative effects on Local SEO? Did the value of the information (# of calls/month) outweigh any local search conflicts? If I was deploying this today, it seems like the blueprint for including DNI script, while mitigating risk for losing local search visibility might go something like this: Hire reputable call-tracking service, ensure DNI will match geographic area-code & be "clean" numbers Insert DNI script on key pages on site Maintain original phone number (non-DNI) on footer, within Schema & on Contact page of the site ?? Profit Ok, those last 2 bullet points aren't as important, but I would be curious where other marketers land on this issue, as I think there's not a general consensus at this point. Thanks everyone!

How can I do a Geo-targeted SEO for a lawncare services client?
Hi All! I am managing an SEO project for a new client, http://1800lawncaredallas.com and the optimization is yet to begin. It is a brand new website. The client serves only in particular locations in Texas. How can I optimize the site for these cities without making it look spammy or over-optimized? Is there a checklist that I can follow to optimize these pages? Thanks!
