Negative Keywords for SEO
-
Hi Mozzers,
I have a client that has a totally legit retail business and they are getting lots of traffic organically that is adult in nature and totally off subject. The reason for this is their domain name contains keywords which while work well for their brand, when reordered and couple with a another keyword (such as picture or image) they get traffic for searches that have nothing to do with them and are pretty awful in nature.
If this was Adwords I'd add a negative in of course but how can I stop bad traffic coming to the site organically?
Any ideas?
Cheers

Hi Egol,
Thanks for your input. The term is actually quite bad as in not your main stream type of adult content so I'm not sure how nice the people are but I get you drift
Thanks for your help and input!

Thanks Patrick - yes I think the meta data is the answer - I won't mention the search term they rank for here but it's bad - they rank for some great stuff too though - many thanks

Every site has these types of visitors. I am sure that many of them are nice people.
What's the difference between these types of visitors and paying for a billboard along a highway where you advertise to random people passing buy?
Your website will be relevant for some of these visitors and if you get enough of them guaranteed that you will get some sales.
I don't think that the Pope would mind if these visitors were dropping into his site. He still gets to show them his message.

Hi there
Short of changing the name of the business and domain, this is unfortunately the way it goes and may have to stay what it is. You can't change word associations or negative connotations of what people use words for.
I would echo Logan's comments of qualifying traffic through titles and meta descriptions. But what I would also do is make sure that your content marketing, site structure / URLs, business listings, etc., are all very explicit in the relevant and related topics that your client is trying to rank for. I would also take a look at competitors to see what keywords they are ranking for and where they are getting backlinks from so that search engines over time will see your client is specific to an industry or topic that is NOT adult natured.
Does this make sense? What I am getting at is making sure you are more and more explicit to search engines that your client's site is related to an industry / topic that is not adult natured.
Let me know if this makes sense or if you have any more questions! Good luck!

That's the only method I know of deter unqualified clicks, interested to see if anyone else chimes in with some useful nuggets of info on this topic!

Thanks Logan,
The meta data is very clear on what the site is about (both title and description). The issue is it's showing up in the SERPs and users are just clicking without reading anything.

Hi,
Have you tried qualifying clicks through meta description and title tag copy? I've had pretty good success using this tactic for local businesses to deter clicks outside of their service area - because a similar problems exists where you can't add negative geographies for where organic results will show.

How does the background on my product photos impact SEO - step and repeat vs. plain background
I have a new e-commerce site and I'm focused on optimizing it for SEO. If I am taking product photos, will having a step-and-repeat (background with our logo repeated) in the background of the product impact how the images are scanned by Google? In other words, would I benefit from having a plain background behind my item shots vs. a backdrop with our logos all across it? I don't want Google to think I'm spamming my logo across all our items, but also want our photos to be recognized as ours. I want to gain SEO from my effort and definitely not hurt it! Thanks!

International SEO - Domains or Folders?
Hi, We have been approached by a potential client. They are a UK company whose website is hosted on a .com domain (the .co.uk forwards to the .com). They also have a German website hosted on a .de domain. Both the .com and the .de are hosted in the UK. We believe that the .de website should be hosted in Germany. You agree? Anyway, they now need to target the US market. They are planning on duplicating the UK (.com) website and creating a US version of the site on a .us domain. They would rewrite the content for the US site to avoid duplications, and add Href Lang attributes etc. They are also debating whether the new US site should be hosted in the US or the UK. We don't think this is the best strategy. Would it not be better to host both the UK and US website on the .com domain. using reginal folders? i.e. example.com/uk, and example.com/us. Obviously we would setup Href Lang accordingly and change the Google Search Console geo targeting options for each of the sub-sites (/uk and /us). Or we could suggest hosting the UK site on the .co.uk domain, and the US on the .com domain. So, what is the best strategy to target the US audience, whilst maintaining UK rankings? Many thanks for your time, hope to hear from you soon 🙂 Lee.

Google+ SERP Visibility For Non Branded Keywords
Hi, I've noticed that a competitors Google+ box is appearing on the right hand side of the Google UK SERPs for a non-branded keyword (open air balustrade). Please see attached image. I've always thought that the Google+ box would only be displayed in the SERPS for branded keywords. How is this Google+ box appearing for non-branded keywords? How can we improve our chances of our Google+ box being shown instead? Many thanks in advance, Lee. vDm914D

.org EMD - worth it or should we go with a lesser keyworded .com
Hello, A client of mine really wants to go with a 3 keyword EMD .org kw1kw2kw3.org The other option is to buy a non EMD .com with 2 of the keywords in it. I am leaning towards the .com, I don't think .org's are very professional, and EMDs seem to be going out of style, but please give your honest opinion now and what will happen in the coming years. Thanks

Because the website I am referring to is a college lifestyle magazine we have various topics that range and I could see confuse Google. The top word is college which is great but some of the others seem a little random and could definitely be more relevant. Any tips on how to improve this? webmaster-tool.png

Whar are the Keyword and Link Implications of renaming a Website
I'm about to change the name of a popular site classyauto.com to nationalvehicle.com. The reason for the name change is mainly because of the negative report on classyauto from years past. We've decided to rename the company to National Vehicle for that reason and other reasons. With that, the current site does not currently rank high for many of the natural organic niche keywords we want to target. But, it does have a good amount of links and traffic. I would like recommendations on the best method to rename the site including any ideas on what to do with existing directories, links, etc. efficiently and effectively. I would also like input on what NOT TO DO. Thanks in advance and any tools, tricks, or additional resources you can point me to would be greatly appreciated.

Public Relations and SEO in 2012
With all the stress on inbound marketing and focusing on links for traffic and not just SEO, it would seem to me that going forward the best skilled people for the job of link building are public relations consultants (at least for startups). PR folks have the contacts and training to get publicity on the big authority sites and really drive big traffic as well as strong links. What am I missing? For link building, why should we hire an SEO firm and not a PR firm? Secondly, I've been contacting a few agencies to get some idea of what they charge and most seem to start at about $5k pm whereas we only have a budget of around $1k for link building. Am I wasting my time thinking I may get any benefit at this low of a budget? I'd love to hear from anyone with any experience using PR firms/consultants and if you have any recommendations that would be great also.

Do you buy keyword strong domains around your brand?
Do you buy keyword domains around your brand? If so do you do this for future use or for redirecting to a sub domain off your core site or for other reasons?
