Best site structure for us?
-
Hey guys,
I have a somewhat silly question that I probably know the answer to - but would still like to hear your POV's. We're a WP theme making company but we also build other stuff. Context:
1. All demos for themes currently go under domain.com/Theme_A/ The demo is lorem ipsum so is marked noindex nofollow. That being said we get rocking analytics data usually (not sure if it's still valuable for G after the noindex).
2. Currently we need landing pages for themes and we're running them under domain.com/Theme_A/optimized-landing-page-title.php dofollow and indexed ofc.
My question is...Would we be better off to include all landing pages under a domain.com/wordpress-themes/ category/tax and then go for the optimized-landing-page-title.php page? Does it make any difference either or? Right now we're not REALLY running them on subdomains (though the structure seems like it), they're just folders. We're thinking that more seo juice would flow through the different pages if we have them all under the same category, rather than basically starting from scratch each time under a new folder. Right?
Thanks!!!

I am talking about the subfolder and anything past the forward /

Hi Andy,
No worries man sorry not trying to be confusing.
Well, I'm assuming you already have the main domain?
if I already have a site architecture which looks like a pyramid including my top keywords as my navigation then I move down through categories trying not to go deeper than three clicks from the homepage.

So let's say your domain name is example.com I want to create a landing page for dishwashers specifically ones made by Miele
I would create the URL example.com/dishwashers/miele

I hope this makes sense if you have any questions please feel free to ask if you already have the architecture in place keep it in place if you do not map it like the photographs.
Hope this helps,
Tom

Hey Thomas,
Sorry - not sure I'm getting it? Kw friendly would be the case for all landing page names. so...sub-folder, or main domain?
Thanks!
-
Thank you for clarifying.
Believe if you have a site with parent pages you can benefit from a popular subfolder
but I would go with the most relevant to the keywords.
So to answer your question each with specific keywords
All the best,
Thomas

Thomas, thank you for the answer. Much appreciated. However I feel that I may not have accentuated the essence of my question too well.
Let's address it in a very brief way.
Is there any benefit from having all landing pages for wordpress themes we build under the same category, eg domain.com/wordpress-themes vs having them each be in a sub-folder for that specific theme, eg http://bigbangthemes.net/TicketLab_WP/wordpress-ticket-system & http://bigbangthemes.net/Showoff_WP/landing-page/
My gut feeling is that right now the fact that we're building links for individual sub-folders means that we're basically starting from scratch with every new item, and that much more link juice & "trust rank" would flow if all would be under the same category within the main domain.
Thanks!

Can you send me the domain?

Do NOT use CAP's in URLs
"My question is...Would we be better off to include all landing pages under a domain.com/wordpress-themes/ category/tax and then go for the optimized-landing-page-title.php page"
Use Yoast or something like it to set the URL & optimized landing page title using WordPress I also love Unbounce if you need it another wise WordPress is fine.
"domain.com/wordpress-themes/ category/tax"
Only if you want to add the category you can do it without or with
I would not URLs end in .php unless internal

SEO audit on a beta site
HI there, Is there much point conducting an SEO site audit on a site that has not yet launched and is protected behind a login? Presumably none of the usual SEO tools (Moz, Screaming Frog etc) can crawl this site becuase it is all locked behind a login. Would it be better to launch it and then do a site audit? Thanks

Blogs created by a company for us and another company
Hi, we are not a big company and as well as creating our own blogs, a company for a while now has provided us each month with blog posts. But hey also provide other companies in the UK with the same content. Each month we create 2 or 3 of our own generated blog posts relating to the services we provide. Also we receive on average 10 blog posts (pulled in to the site through a word press add in and an rss feed from the company) to the site. The content is about specific topics which people will be searching for and they are really well optimized pages. Our own blog posts are looked at more often 80% to 20% but we do have a great link from a national site with a DA of 97 linking to one of their blog posts. But I wondered if google penalizes us because there will be other companies across the UK with the exact same content as us? Or whether these blog posts will help us because it is great content, even though other companies will probably have the same posts on their site? Nobody in our area uses this content as we have an agreement with the company which provides it. Many Thanks

How to position and structure H1 and H2 on a page
Quick Question: We have been working on a website for an hotel and we are now facing an issue regarding how to position the H1 and H2 on each page: Since the Client has expressed the desire to have the title of the page mentioned right above the textWould it make sense to have the title of the page as H1 and have more descriptive H2 right below it? Ex: H1--> Accommodation H2--> Page Description Thanks,

"Turning off" content to a site
One site I manage has a lot of low quality content. We are in the process of improving the overall site content but we have "turned off" a large portion of our content by setting 2/3 of the posts to draft. Has anyone done this before or had experience with doing something similar? This quote from Bruce Clay comes to mind: “Where a lot of people don’t understand content factoring to this is having 100 great pages and 100 terrible pages—they average, when the quality being viewed is your website,” he explained. “So, it isn’t enough to have 100 great pages if you still have 100 terrible ones, and if you add another 100 great pages, you still have the 100 terrible ones dragging down your average. In some cases we have found that it’s much better, to improve your ranking, to actually remove or rewrite the terrible ones than add more good ones.” What are your thoughts? Thanks

My site has been dropping, not sure why!
My site has been dropping in the rankings, not sure - my metrics seem better than my competitors. Historically I have been a very stable #2 for my main term, but now it's down to 7! According to SEO Moz, my domain authority is 32, while my better performing competitors are are 26, 11, and 1! Have more links than they do. Trying to think it through, not sure what is happening. My home page bounces at a low 20%-ish, other Google Analytics are good. I have a company Facebook account, occasionally upload YouTube vids, do online press releases, etc. I do have to target several metros scattered across the state, while my competitors usually focus on one major metro. I do have some SEO Moz errors, which focus on dup content due to our web editor's naming system. An example would be domain.com/keyword-keyword-i-14 vs. domain/differnet keyword-different better keyword-i-14. 14 would be the actual page number. Our system lets me change the page title keywords, as I've added new links and pages over the years there are some dupes. The only major change is I've added a password protected section for sales rep materials. The hosting/web guru firm we use has assured me Google doesn't see pages behind the password portection. Not sure if Google is testing a new SERP formula. All social media or non-website results seem to have dropped out of search for my terms. Just local business sites like mine and some directory sites remain. Any advice or private consult would be greatly appreciated as I am a ... self taught 'OneManBand' for high tech marketing in our company. Thanks
