We've a client that wants to repurpose some of the content on there site but not lose rankings. However its changing the content to an alternative to ....

The Current URL Example would be test.co.uk/prodcut-catogory/product-1 . This side of the business is being sold however they have products elsewhere in the range that can be used as alternatives to the product range that will be moved, so they want to amend these pages with an " alternative " slant.
Example idea would be to change to the following : test.co.uk/prodcut-catogory/alternative-to-product-1, trying not to change the URL to much, keeping the majority of the content the same but adding new copy stating the benefits of using the alternative product. So it becomes a comparison between the two. I appreciate I will have to amend the URLs, titles, meta, H1s, add new copy & preform a 301's.
Option 2
Simply write a second page which is all brand new content talking about it being an alternative to the products and doing a 301 from the original page but not amending that.
Be great to get peoples feedback on this approach and if there is anything else that I could do to minimise the drop in rankings once I complete the changes.

Option 2 would undoubtedly result in a change in rank. That change could be positive or negative depending on the content of the new pages, so if you're going to use this method you need to make sure that the content is on par.
As for Option 1, so long as you 301 redirect the old pages to the new ones and add copy, you shouldn't see a fall in rank. If anything, the added content may boost your rank depending on the quality.
Either way, so long as you do so carefully and correctly, both methods could work. Personally I would opt for Option 1 as it seems to be the least labour intensive and has a more predictable outcome on your rank.

Have My SEO Cake & Eat It - Mix Viral Content & Business Content?
Hello, I optimize for a fashion, eCommerce site which has catalogue pages and product pages. http://www.zando.co.za/ We're currently working on a large "blog" which tons of great content designed to attract readers, links and tons of long tail traffic. We'll be doing how-to videos, celeb interviews, top-tens, etc. etc. We'll even have a UGC community section eventually. Really great. Now, I want to use the links generated by this section to rank for generics like this: For example: I want to rank for "Lingerie" and I have this page set up as the target: http://www.zando.co.za/women/clothing/lingerie/ I create some amazing content that generates lots of links containing the word "lingerie" . That awesome content lives in:(hypothetical URL:) http://www.zando.co.za/fashion/magazine/how-lingerie-has-changed-over-50-years/ I want to (and this is where you come in 😉 get people linking to my catalogue page (http://www.zando.co.za/women/clothing/lingerie/) where they can find a banner or something alluding to that piece of link bait (the /fashion/magazine/ url). Perhaps similar to the Wordpress style <read more="">page break on posts?</read> Reason is, I want my "Money-Page" to get the links with "Lingerie" in it. Problem is, it'll be another click to the thing they want to find. Also, say I decide a few months later that I want to do another piece, like "lingerie in films" and do the same. My 'banner' idea would get very crowded or, it would mean that I bump the 50-years piece, which then makes for bad UX for readers clicking through looking for the old piece. Or perhaps this can all be solved with good design? Question regarding eCommerce sites, relative URLs and secuirty certificates
We recently installed a new SSL certificate on an ecommerce site. Our IT Director is insisting that all pages on the site must be coded in such a way so that the address bar maintains a green background when a visitor is navigating the site after navigating to a secure page or logging in. I have worked on many ecommerce sites and never has this been an issue. Amazon does not use the green bar....but they are Amazon. In order for this to work, he is insisting that all internal URLs be coded as relative instead of absolute. How bad is this for SEO or does it really not matter that much? How crucial is it for trust and security? Opinions welcome!

Video Keno gambling SEO client !? Do I want em?
I have a guy who wants SEO help. Actually he owns several companies and is willing to put my ad before all the movies in a local theater plus an ad AND a Q&A section about SEO and Internet marketing in a small newspaper he mails to 7k businesses every month in exchange for my help. While I am excited about the exposure and I'm sure it would result in some business I'm not excited about touching anything related to gambling at ALL. Am I right in thinking this or should I treat it like just another client? He has a site where he teaches people how to win at video keno and sells this info packet. Porn and gambling. Spam to site with GMail addresses - any way to resolve.

Duplicating Product Titles in the Page-Content
I have been debating this with a few others within my office and we would like an outside opinion on this issue. This screenshot is of a new product grid I have been designing. I have decided to try something new for SEO that I have seen elsewhere. (see attached image) The page-content below the last products on the page, now have a small paragraph that contains all the products "titles" that are visible on the page. The intention is to capitalize on multiple search terms by using modifiers to replace special character sets within the title. For example: 46" 3 Seat Perforated Square Picnic Table = 46 Inch 3 Seat Perforated Square Picnic Table Not only does this give a secondary search term that could convert but increases the number if instances of "Table" within the page.
