Do custom tracking codes affect indexing?
-
Hello,
My company uses a tracking system that allows our employees to apply a short code snippet to the end of our URLs for marketing attribution. An example of such a code would be: https://www.schoolofmotion.com/?ref_id=moz-test
However, in Google Analytics we are seeing duplicates of our content, where the pages with the individual tracking codes are counted separately from the pages without. From a reporting perspective, this is annoying and definitely worth a fix. However, I'm curious if this problem is affecting our search potential as well. Could this tracking system be splitting traffic in Google's eyes?
From an SEO perspective, how should we approach this? Would canonical tags fix this duplication issue in Google Analytics? Is there something else that we should use?
Thanks in advance. The Moz community is incredible.

Glad I could be of help Caleb! & Thank you Dr Peat!
like Dr Peat said it’s tricky when filtering google analytics
Do you know everything you don’t want to have google show you?
Because I’m on my cell phone I have posted some links with examples you will want to do the same thing in search console/webmaster tools
Remove Query String from URLs In Google Analytics like Dr. Pete said need to create a new view in analytics
https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/1009714?hl=en
- Click Admin, and navigate to the account and property to which you want to add the view.
- In the VIEW column, click the menu, then click Create a new view.
- Select Web Site
- Add website
- given a name like filtered
Google created a spreadsheet to automate the process.
Make a copy of this sheet and follow the instructions (clearly laid out on the first tab of the spreadsheet),
you'll be left with a list of all query parameters found in your data from the past N days. When leveraging the spreadsheet, it’s optimal to use a view without any filters on it.
CITE:

Open Google sheets and make a copy of the "Google Analytics Exclude URL Query Parameters Worksheet"
here:

you can also utilize Google's API for bigger sites https://ga-dev-tools.appspot.com/query-explorer/?csw=1
if you are a regex person this is helpful https://www.lunametrics.com/regex-book/
I hope this helps,

We'll definitely look into getting Canonical tags on the site. Thank you very much for the thoughtful response and examples.
Cheers!

I apologize for the brief reply I have rewritten this three times and somehow closed my page. Anyway, the important part is this is your issue you are not implementing canonical tags
see this image full-size you have no canonical's
To specify which URL that you want people to see in search results. You might prefer people reach your home page via https://www.schoolofmotion.com rather than. https://www.schoolofmotion.com/?ref_id=moz-test
Cite: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/139066?hl=en
You are missing a canonical on your homepage and other pages as well this will lead to duplicate content when you post things like
https://www.schoolofmotion.com/?ref_id=moz-test
in order to prevent this query string from becoming a duplicate, you need a self-referencing canonical or a canonical reference from the query string to the correct URL https://www.schoolofmotion.com/?ref_id=moz-test
I've given you 5 URLs to reference and become more familiar with the subject

- https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/139066?hl=en
**Reverse proxies allow you to set your headers this can be a very efficient way of adding a lot of canonical's if you're using a CMS like Drupal, Magento or WordPress I recommend **

( I somehow closed my page 3 times while writing this message so I apologize if it is brief)
please let me know if there's any way I can be of assistance

Drop in indexation but increase in organic traffic
We've had a puzzling drop in indexed pages on our ecommerce website. My crawl returns just over 25k items. Until 19/6 we had about 23-24k indexed. Then we experienced a sudden drop from 19/6 to 26/6: from 23,400 to 18,999, losing 4.4k pages from one week to the next. At the same time, our organic traffic has not decreased, it actually increased, however, it's only been a couple of weeks so that may be coincidence. A few things that have happened during the past few weeks: 31/5: we implemented pagination on category pages to avoid issues with duplicate content - could it be that this led to a decrease in indexed pages 3 weeks later? However, I can only find about 1.5k pages in my crawl that are page 2+ 18-19/6: we had some website outages over the weekend; as a B2B business, we don't get much traffic over the weekend, so I can't see an impact to traffic. However, the following week, indexation dropped by another 250 (then stayed the same this past week), so I don't think this was a factor. 21/6: we retired another website and migrated it to our main website. However, all pages were redirected to existing pages so no new pages were created for the migration. This doesn't really explain a decrease in indexation, but may account for some of the increase in organic traffic; however not all as the retired website hardly got any organic traffic. So, should we be worried? As our website is quite large, it would probably be quite difficult to pin point exactly which pages dropped off the index, but a loss of 19% of pages is quite significant. Then again, it doesn't appear to have negatively impacted organic traffic... Have you got any suggestions for what I should be looking at to find out what happened? Should I be worried at this point? I will definitely continue to have an eye on how our organic traffic (and indexation) develops but I am not sure if there is anything I can do at this point. I'd appreciate your advice on this, to make sure I am not missing something blindingly obvious. Thanks! RmWaNib JJm4tC3

Conversion Tracking Setup; Is there a decent guide?
Ok, I'm looking into how to set up conversion tracking for our website, and frankly, I'm totally confused. In looking at Google documentation, I'm not sure if I need to use Tag manager, throw some code into the site with jQuery, or sacrifice a goat. I'd like to implement a variety of tracking goals / events / things on several websites, so I'm really looking for a comprehensive guide. I couldn't find any in depth stuff on google. Help?

Tracking time spent on a section of a website in Google Analytics
Hi, I've been asked by a client to track time spent or number of pages visited on a specific section of their website using Google Analytics but can't see how to do this. For example, they have a "golf" section within their site and want to measure how many people either visit 5 page or more within the golf section or spend at least 6 minutes browsing the various golf section pages. Can anyone advise how if this can be done, and if so, how I go about it. Thanks

Tracking Clicks on a Global Header Across Multiple Sites
Hey All, A particular client has multiple websites and we're planning on implementing a global header across 15+ sites. I've been looking for a way to track the clicks on this global header across all sites (that is that they are summed up), what's the best way to go about this if I am using Google Analytics (I know Adobe site catalyst could do this no problem with some advanced tweaking), any ideas? I could do the general click tracking route and tag every link but that will only help me if I do that for each site (that being said, if the global header for all sites pulls from a single HTML, then tagging it would technically count all the clicks from all the sites, the only caveat being that I'd have to pick which Google analytics profile I'd want to track the header with). Thoughts? Thanks!

URL String Tracking Question--Need help!
I am doing some research for a freelance project and found a URL receiving a decent amount of traffic from search with this url string after the normal page url (xxx.com/credit-card-counseling.aspx?match=e&query=debthelper.com&id=22097628847&id=1810807655) Is this some sort of GA tracking code? Why would it be used on that page to track organic search hits if that happens automatically? Would love some help figuring this out! Thanks,

Tracking an onpage 'event'
Hi all Wondering if anyone could help out with this one please. My client is a government backed free internet safety website and in the next few days they will be launching an update on all of their pages which will let people know if their browser is out of date. For example, when you go to their site you will get a message advising you to upgrade your browser for security reasons. They have employed the following code to check the browser The client are keen to know how many times in a period this message is shown to users. Any idea how one would go about tracking this please. Would it involve some custom GA work, would I be able to track the hits on https://wxxxx.org/javascript/update.js in GA? I'm a little stumped. Obviously I can tell how many people loaded the page but not sure how to work out what % of them see the javascript Many thanks for your help Carl
