Is it urgent to have fewer than 100 internal links on a webpage?
-
Hi,
Our website is set up so that our top menu is on every page, which means every page is going to have around the same amount of internal links (225-ish). Is this an issue that needs to be fixed for our pages to rank, or is it only a recommendation that doesn't really impact SEO that much? If it is the only issue listed for a particular page, is there another reason that page might not be ranking even though it has a 99 score? Or is because of having 225 internal links? I have many product pages on my website that have a 99 score on the Page Optimization with the only recommendation being an info that says not to have too many internal links. My understanding is that internal links are defined as any URL on a page pointing to another part of the same root domain/site.
So, for example, my page: https://www.twowayradiosfor.com/Motorola-CP185-p/cp185-lkp.htm has 225 internal links in the source code for that page:
Where do I go to fix this issue if I need to get to below 100 internal links? Do I erase the links, or set up a no-follow tag? I appreciate any help or guidance.
Thank you!
Austin

Just remember to evaluate performance. With the mega menu links gone, some of those deeper pages may now receive less SEO authority which could sting the long-tail. But the benefit should be, less bleed from higher level pages which connect with higher-tier search terms
For different sites, different approaches can be better or worse. Don't be afraid to roll back if it doesn't work as you anticipated!

Thank you! Changing the Mega Menu so that it no longer drops down fixed my issue - this one change took me from 225 links to 45 links on my page. Such an easy solution - thank you!

Didn't notice this and it's a good call. That part at least could be minimised

The "Radios by Industry" column has so many links in it that it extends off the bottom of the page and is at least 50% unseeable and unusable in both Chrome and Firefox.
'nuff said.

I hate when people give hard and fast internal / external link counts advice
The truth is that the answer is variable depending upon your site's SEO authority (and thereby, the authority of all contained web pages). Think of your site like a big water tank connected to an irrigation system, sprinkling your other content (and maybe some content on external sites)
If you have loads of SEO authority (water) then you can afford to sprinkle and top-up, plants (content) across your farm and maybe even help out Joe - your farmer mate down the road a bit
If you don't have loads of SEO authority, doing this same thing could cause your tank to bleed dry (of SEO auth / water). Instead of making thousands of plants grow better, since you only have one tiny fraction of a drop of water per plant - everything dies (bad!)
This is how Moz evaluates your domain: https://analytics.moz.com/pro/link-explorer/overview?site=twowayradiosfor.com&target=domain
20 domain authority is "something to work with" but, I think if I'm being honest, it might not be enough for 200+ links per page
This is the page you linked to on your site: https://www.twowayradiosfor.com/Motorola-CP185-p/cp185-lkp.htm
... yes, it does have a crap-load of links but most are in the mega menu, the top-line nav
Many of those links begin 'hidden' and therefore are de-valued (not completely, but partially) so your bleed out shouldn't be super-severe. I would cut it down a bit if possible, maybe to 180 links or less if you can. See how that impacts your SEO, if it makes things better then keep the change - if it makes things worse, put your full mega menu back
Make a little change, measure the results, see how you go (hope that makes sense)

Do javascript pseudo-links dilute link juice ?
Hi, On our ecommerce, we use multiple pseudo-links for the layered navigation (to filter by color, site, etc), so that google doesn't crawl every combination of filters. I know this kind of links don't pass link juice and don't get crawled (provided you hide the target urls in your javascript). But, as there is an "onclick" property, I'm afraid that google could understand that these are links, and treat them the same way as nofollowed links (not following them but diluting link juice anyway). Do you know if this is the case ? Thanks,

Google found bad links delete them or 301 redirect?
we went into our google account and saw about 70 bad links that they found on our site. what's the best thing to do, seo-wise: should we go into the pages that have the bad links and delete them from the html code, or re-direct them in our htaccess script?

Does a www.domain.com/# count as a link?
Hi I thinking about consolidation some info from 5 pages onto 1 by using the hashtag at the end of the link to send people to the rigt section of the page. Does each link to the www.domain.com/# count as link so that I wont really gain any linkvalue by doing it?

Too many links
Hello, sorry question 2! I run the report it says we have 120 links roughly per page. I know this is bad however I have question about an oscommerce site. I identified some links that can be deleted for example Product picture is a link then the title and then its says details (so I can delete the details and that should save about 15 links) Now I really can only delete the breadcrumb for example car>>ford>>spareparts>>engine If I delete the breadcrumb I would lose four links would you say thats a good idea? or leave the breadcrumb due to the seo benefits. Many thanks for your help. Sonja

Too many links on a page?
On my blog posts, I have links to all the categories and months, dating back 5-6 years. This make the number of links on each blog page well over 100, which I understand might decrease the value of each page. Is there a problem with having more than 100 links on a page?

How would you handle network header links?
Some companies have a lot of sites covering various topics, for example, http://ninemsn.com.au/. Each category also have dropdown menus where there are more links, taking their pages to well over 100 links. Should these headers be implemented in javascript? Is there a list of best practices somewhere when dealing with a lot of network sites? I'd prefer to reduce the number of links, but sometimes company policies don't allow this. Any suggestions or tips would be helpful.

Social media links/buttons - best practices
Has anyone tested social media buttons, to see which types, styles, and placements get the most clicks? Should they go at the top of an article, or are they OK at the bottom? Should the icons definitely have labels? Display # of tweets and Likes? How big should they be? My preference is for discrete buttons with a smallish, plain icon and a label. I don't display tweets or Likes, unless it's a healthy number. And I still think a "share by email" icon is important. I put them at the bottom of the article, to keep the home page uncluttered and lead the eye into reading the article. I'm also concerned about leaking rank from the homepage, especially for a site that's still establishing itself. But if moving buttons to the top gets more shares, that's probably better. Is there a Wordpress plugin that you really like? (I haven't found one yet - I'm still hardcoding my social media buttons.) Opinions are great, but test results are better! Can anyone share?
