Change Phone Number Based on Traffic Source + Ping URL for Call Tracking Number
-
Hi Everyone,
Is there a tool that can change the phone number on a web page based on the visitor source (i.e., direct, organic, paid, etc.)? I'd like to implement a solution like this with different call tracking numbers based on the visitor source. We use the Google suite for our analytics (GA, GTM, Google Data Studio, Google Optimize is also an option as well).
- Also, is there a good call tracking service that will ping a URL each time the phone number is called so that we can track these calls as events in GA? The majority of our visitors use a desktop PC and dial in the number on the screen rather than clicking (tapping) on it from a mobile device.
Thanks,
Andy

Hi AndyRCWRCM !
For dynamic phone number insertion based on visitor source, you can leverage Google Tag Manager (GTM) and its built-in functionalities. GTM allows you to create triggers based on different conditions, such as source/medium, and then dynamically change elements on your website, like the phone number.
Here's a basic outline of how you can achieve this:
Create Variables in GTM:
Set up variables to capture information like source/medium.Set Triggers:
Create triggers based on the visitor source. For example, if the source is "organic," trigger the change.Implement Tags:
Use tags to change the phone number dynamically. This could involve JavaScript to modify the HTML on the page.Regarding call tracking services, you might consider platforms like CallRail, CallTrackingMetrics, or DialogTech. These services usually provide dynamic number insertion based on various parameters and offer integration options.
To track calls as events in Google Analytics (GA), most call tracking services allow you to set up event tracking. The service typically generates a code snippet that you add to your website, and it pings a URL or sends data to GA when a call occurs.
For desktop users who manually dial the number, you might need a solution that can detect when a call is initiated. This could involve additional tools or software on the backend to detect when the phone is in use.
Ensure compliance with privacy regulations and clearly communicate any call tracking to your users to maintain transparency.

I'd be interested to hear which solution you choose to go for in the end and why.

Hi Alex,
- Thanks I've since learned that all of CallRail, Wildjar, Phonewagon, and others like these three can track calls and send the data back to Google Analytics for instance as events.
Thanks!

Unfortunately, outside of Google Ads, Google doesn't offer a solution that you can use across your marketing efforts. (Which is a shame, as they clearly have the infrastructure set up to support the functionality in Ads. I, for one, would be happy to pay to extend this across to Analytics for more general tracking)
There are a number of 3rd parties who offer services that will integrate with Google Analytics, Ads, etc. and, potentially, your CRM if you have one. There is a good article here that might be a good starting point: https://www.optimizesmart.com/phone-call-tracking-google-analytics-beyond/

Abnormally High Direct Traffic Volume
We have abnormally high amounts of direct traffic to our site. It's comprising over half of all web traffic while organic is second with considerably less. From there the volume decreases amongst other channels. I've never seen such a huge proportion of traffic being attributed the Direct. Does anyone know how to test this or see if there is an error in Google Analytics reporting?

Tracking a Redirect
Recently a client of mine had a new site developed and had changed their domain, so the old URL is now redirecting to the new URL. They want to be able to track referral traffic in the analytics so we can decipher how much direct traffic is coming in from people typing in the old URL. Is this possible and if so, can I have a guide in doing so? Thanks!

Making changes
Hello, I need to make some major changes on my newly launched website which is already indexed by google and added in GWT. Now, do I bring the current version of site down? and use Google URL removal to delete URLs? The changes I am going to implement, is going to be alot, changes of contents, adding more pages, changing URL names and such. Also not to mention, site is so new, has not traffic. My plan is to have a fresh start with the new version. Your advice is appreciated.

How to see organic traffic only?
Im having trouble separating our organic traffic vs our PPC. When I go into Analytics>Traffic>Sources>Search>Organic, its giving me numbers that are not accurate. I believe whats happening is that its not able to distinguish our bing organic/ppc. Is using Webmaster tools Search Queries a more accurate way to determine organic search volume?

Why is my traffic dropping so hard?
Hi guys, My traffic has been dropping pretty hard from just over 3k to around 250 in the last few days. I've ran a few tests using Google webmaster tools and Open Site Explorer, as well as answering a pretty cool quiz that was created by an SEO to determine if I'm the victim of any Google updates etc, and everything is looking okay... What do you think could be causing this issue? We're only just gearing up to start on a SEO campaign. At the moment no SEO is being done other than just casual blogging. CcZoXP7.png

Ideas for a strange surge in direct traffic
Being the type of person that can't stop checking my Google Analytics, I noticed this morning that between the hours of 12 and 2 central time last night I recieved a strange surge of direct traffic. My site typically gets around 40 direct visits per day (most of them coming during peak hours around the time people are getting off of work). I received 150 direct visits during this random time in the middle of the night. My bounce rate soared as almost every visit was a bounce. The visitors locations are spread out as if it is natural human traffic. Every single one of the visitors is using a chrome browser. Has anyone else run into something like this? All I can think of is that someone might have an addon or toolbar for chrome that linked to my site for a while in a way that caused unsuspecting visitors to end up on my page. For now I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping the traffic doesn't return, as it could be bad news for my Adsense. *Edit: Also of particular interest, each direct visit went to an internal page on my site and no two of the 150 visits went to the same internal page. I also added an image showing a normal complete day's direct traffic and my direct traffic for today so far (The bulk of the surge came yesterday but the shot from today illustrates the surge better because it is missing my naturally daily direct traffic that comes in the afternoon) heXFb#LiiEr

Why does Google Analytics think PPC traffic is organic?
I have a bastard of a problem... Google Analytics is incorrectly tracking PPC traffic as SEO which is screwing up all my reporting . I don't care for rankings, I care for actual SEO traffic and I can't be sure that what i am seeing is correct which is driving me nuts. Any ideas?
