Blog article cannibalizes our home page
-
Hello there,
We're having a rather big SEO issue that I’m hoping someone here can help us with, perhaps having experienced the same thing or simply understanding what's going on.
Since around June, our website's home page has lost the majority of its most important rankings. Not just dropping, but losing them entirely and all at once.
We think it was self-inflicted: Almost at the same time, a blog article of ours (which we had recently updated) started ranking for almost all the same keywords.
While our home page is a commercial page highlighting only our own product, the article that usurped the position is a comparison article, comparing our own solution to competitors. The reason we created that article is because we noticed a trend of Google increasingly favoring such comparison articles over dedicated product pages. But of course we didn’t plan to cannibalize our own home page with it.
My question is whether anyone has experience with such a case? Is there a way to "tell"/influence Google to rank our home page again, instead of ranking that article?
Thanks a lot,
Pascal

@MasteryQuest
Absolutely, try to link with the relevant main keywords from the blog article to the main product page. You can take my website AJF as an example. All the best, Anja -
@Maximuxxx Hey everyone,
So, I stumbled upon this new tool recently, and it honestly feels like I might've discovered something pretty groundbreaking in the SEO realm. It's called Editor Machina. Has anyone else come across it?
What intrigued me was how it promises to deliver content that's not just SEO-optimized but also autonomous, original, and adhering strictly to grammar rules. And trust me, having gone through a ton of SEO tools and platforms, this one seems different.
I mean, the world of SEO is constantly evolving, and the emphasis on original content has never been this high, right? From what I've seen, Editor Machina seems to address these core areas effectively. I'm wondering if anyone else here has had a chance to use it or hear about it?
How do you think such a tool might reshape the content landscape in the SEO industry? Are we looking at the future, or is it just another fleeting trend? Would love to hear your thoughts and spark a discussion on this. This is (I guess) AI Article writer system.
Cheers!

Is it truly cannibalizing or is the combined traffic increasing overall website traffic? Should be the first thing to consider before identifying the appropriate solution.

@Maximuxxx
Yes, like the other guy said. Do internal linking to your main page..... -
@webduh said in Blog article cannibalizes our home page:
@Maximuxxx Make your homepage Conical to the Blog post. David @ Webduh.com
This strategy should work, can anyone verify with experience?
-
You can also Link heavily from the article to your homepage to "pass" the link juice back.

Unsolved On page grader
All of my keywords score a 53 using the on page grader. When I look at the notes it indicates I don't have the keyword in question anywhere on the page which, while true in some cases, is not always factual. Does anyone have a similar experience?

English pages given preference over local language
We recently launched a new design of our website and for SEO purposes we decided to have our website both in English and in Dutch. However, when I look at the rankings in MOZ for many of our keywords, it seems the English pages are being preferred over the Dutch ones. That never used to be the case when we had our website in the old design. It mainly is for pages that have an English keyword attached to them, but even then the Dutch page would just rank. I'm trying to figure out why English pages are being preferred now and whether that could actually damage our rankings, as search engines would prefer copy in the local language. An example is this page: https://www.bluebillywig.com/nl/html5-video-player/ for the keywords "HTML5 player" and "HTML5 video player".

Should we remove a keyword from the base URL?
We have a client that we are rebuilding their website and they are thinking about dropping one word from the current base URL. That particular word is one of the keywords we are trying to rank for. Do you think that because one of our keywords is in the current domain name that it would be a mistake to change it to just the brand name without the extra keyword added on?

Question regarding international SEO
Hi there, I have a question regarding international SEO and the APAC region in particular. We currently have a website extension .com and offer our content in English. However, we notice that our website hardly ranks in Google in the APAC region, while one of the main languages in that region is also English. I figure one way would be to set up .com/sg/ (or .com/au/ or .com/nz/), but then the content would still be in English. So wouldn't that be counted as duplicate content? Does anyone have experience in improving website rankings for various English-speaking countries, without creating duplicate content? Thanks in advance for your help!

Ways to Identify Popular Search Terms
Certain searches seem intuitively like they would be popular, but don't appear so in my keyword research on Moz Pro. For example, I am a therapist and would have guessed that a lot of people would be searching for "online therapy California" during this pandemic, but actually those terms are not popular. I looked at Google Trends to see if I could understand this better, but It wasn't very helpful. Any other suggestions for where to get more information when search terms you would expect to be high volume don't appear to be so?
