Rankings preferring English URL above local URL
-
We've recently had a redesign for our website and it has influenced our rankings a little bit. However, what I mainly noticed is that for some keywords in MOZ the English URL is looked at in terms of ranking, instead of the local URL. It used to be just the local URL ranking, even for keywords that are more English oriented, and I'm wondering if that might be hurting our rankings. And more importantly, why it's happening.
An example of a page where it's happening is: https://www.bluebillywig.com/online-video-platform/

When it comes to search engine rankings, there are several factors that can influence which URL is considered for ranking, including language targeting, regional settings, and content relevance. The specific behavior you described, where the English URL is ranked instead of the local URL, can be influenced by multiple factors:
Language Targeting: Search engines, like Google, use language targeting signals to determine which language a webpage is primarily targeting. If your website has clear language targeting signals indicating that the English version is intended for English-speaking users, search engines may prioritize the English URL for English-oriented keywords. This is done to provide the most relevant results to users based on their language preferences.
Hreflang Tags: Hreflang tags are HTML elements that help search engines understand the language and regional targeting of different versions of a webpage. By implementing hreflang tags correctly, you can indicate to search engines which URL version is intended for specific languages or regions. Ensuring that hreflang tags are implemented accurately and consistently across your website can help search engines rank the appropriate URL version for the intended audience.
Content Relevance: Search engines consider the relevance of the content on a webpage to the search query. If the English version of your webpage is more relevant or contains stronger signals for certain English-oriented keywords, it is possible that search engines may prioritize that URL over the local URL. This can happen if the English version has more comprehensive content, better keyword optimization, or stronger backlink profile.
To address the issue and potentially improve rankings for local keywords, you can consider the following steps:
Language Targeting: Make sure that your website's language targeting signals, such as HTML lang attributes and language-specific content, clearly indicate the intended audience for each URL version.
Hreflang Implementation: Double-check the implementation of hreflang tags on your website. Ensure that they are correctly set up and consistent across all relevant pages. Hreflang tags help search engines understand which URL version to rank for specific languages or regions.
Content Optimization: Review the content on your local URL versions to ensure they are well-optimized for relevant local keywords. Conduct keyword research specific to the target region and incorporate those keywords naturally within the content.
Backlink Strategy: Consider implementing a backlink strategy that targets local websites and directories in the region you want to rank for. Localized backlinks can help improve the visibility and ranking of your local URL versions.

Are URLs a ranking factor?
URLs are a minor ranking factor search engines use when determining a particular page or resource's relevance to a search query. While they do give weight to the authority of the overall domain itself, keyword use in a URL can also act as a ranking factor.

Big Ranking fluctuations
Hi all, 👉 we need your help/expertise. For a longer period of time we (https://bluebillywig.com) experience huge increases and decreases on a day/week ly basis for our keywords. We are moving from positions in the top 3 to positions in the top 50. The site has been fully screened for technical issues, indexation problems and we have also checked the positions of competitors (where we do not see the fluctuations). Example keywords where we see the issue: Gepersonaliseerde video Video content protection. See screenshots example bbw.png BBW-example.png If somebody has any suggestions, let us know.

Blog article cannibalizes our home page
Hello there, We're having a rather big SEO issue that I’m hoping someone here can help us with, perhaps having experienced the same thing or simply understanding what's going on. Since around June, our website's home page has lost the majority of its most important rankings. Not just dropping, but losing them entirely and all at once. We think it was self-inflicted: Almost at the same time, a blog article of ours (which we had recently updated) started ranking for almost all the same keywords. While our home page is a commercial page highlighting only our own product, the article that usurped the position is a comparison article, comparing our own solution to competitors. The reason we created that article is because we noticed a trend of Google increasingly favoring such comparison articles over dedicated product pages. But of course we didn’t plan to cannibalize our own home page with it. My question is whether anyone has experience with such a case? Is there a way to "tell"/influence Google to rank our home page again, instead of ranking that article? Thanks a lot, Pascal

Unsolved Have we been penalised?
Hey Community, We need help! Have we been penalised, or is there some technical SEO issue that is stopping our service pages from being properly read? Website: www.digitalnext.com.au In July 2021, we suffered a huge drop in coverage for both short and longtail keywords. We thought that this could have been because of the link spam, core web vitals or core update around that time period. SEMRush: https://gyazo.com/d85bd2541abd7c5ed2e33edecc62854c

GSC: https://gyazo.com/c1d689aff3506d5d4194848e625af6ec There is no manual action within GSC and we have historically ranked page 1 for super competitive keywords. After waiting some time thinking it was an error, we have then have taken the following actions: Launched new website. Rewrote all page content (except blog posts). Ensured each page passes core web vitals. Submitted a backlink detox. Removed a website that was spoofing our old one. Introduced strong pillar and cluster internal link structure. After 3 months of the new website, none of our core terms has come back and we are struggling for visibility. We still rank for some super long-tail keywords but this is the lowest amount of visibility we have had in over 5 years. Every time we launch a blog post it does rank for competitive keywords, yet the old keywords are still completely missing. It almost feels like any URLs that used to rank for core terms are being penalised. So, I am wondering whether this is a penalisation (and what algorithm), or, there is something wrong with the structure of our service pages for them to not rank. Look forward to hearing from you

Why no backlinks from popular local news portals?
Hi friends. I build link portfolio for local businesses and found out that publishing payed news articles in biggest local news portals we never see backlinks coming from these portals. Interesting is that these articles even appears in google search. Backlinks is correct with anchor text. How is it even possible? For example latest article https://www.delfi.lv/bizness/komerczinas/kravu-parvadajumi-ar-temperaturas-rezimu-lielakie-izaicinajumi.d?id=52924741 or this https://www.tvnet.lv/7092731/es-ierobezojumu-ietekme-uz-kravu-parvadajumiem Stuff swears there is no restrictions. They even asked extra money for google indexing. You can see there is correct link in article. Any suggestion or idea how is this possible would be highly appreciated.

Going from a national to local marketing strategy
I started my graphic design business (imageco.com) after the dot com industry collapsed in 2001 and there were virtually no jobs to be found, I focused mainly on logo design and ultimately figured out a way to drive quite a lot of traffic to my site by the means of creating directories for printers in every major city in the US. It worked exceedingly well for many years but eventually I had a lot of copycats use this technique and ultimately it pissed off quite a few designers around the country and I was reported one to many times to Google and was forced to make some changes. So I dropped the directories and redesigned my site and stuffed as many place names in the site as I could so I wouldn’t lose all my traffic, it worked for a while but ultimately my site has drifted further down in the serps and with the advent of Google Local my traffic pretty much disappeared. Furthermore with the surge in crowdsourcing businesses like 99designs the value people placed on my logo design services dropped to a point where there just wasn’t much reason to go after a national market anyway. I’m not proud of how I built my business but I don’t make any excuses for it, I had a mortgage and a family to feed so I did what I needed to do. I’m now at the point where I’ve decided my best option is to move away from logo design and redefine my business as more of a visual identity/graphic design company and go after the local market. I live in the Seattle area, Bellevue to be specific and the economy is such that I know there is a ton of local opportunity that I'm missing out on and I want to focus my marketing efforts here. My question is what is the best way for me to do this? I focused mainly on logo design for nearly 20 years and my keywords are built around logo design for which I still hit fairly well on but I need to expand my offerings and want to redirect my efforts at turning up on local searches for other terms like graphic design, web design, print design, etc. I don’t necessarily want to instantly drop all of the landing pages I created for logo design because that is still where the majority of my business comes from but I’m fairly certain that these landing pages have me Pigeonholed as just a logo designer. Do I need to delete everything and start completely from scratch or is there a less extreme approach to making this kind of transition? And once I do make these changes what might be the time frame for turning up better locally? I’m in the process of redesigning the site, updating my portfolio and writing all new content and could really use the advice of this community. Thank you!

I am ranking for local broad terms, but I am not ranking when geo-modifier is included.
I have noticed that my rankings for broad terms have dramatically improved in the area I service. But, when I put the broad term in my search query with a geo-modifier I notice I am still not ranking even though my domain authority and page authority is higher than the competitor who is ranking. Why might this be? I am not penalized, or have a manual action. I am also featured in more hyperlocal niche directories.
