Mile long pages with calls to action
-
Do these mile-long pages with a call to action at the bottom really produce more conversions? For example, see http://www.keywordelite.com/. Has anyone A/B tested this format vs. breaking up the content into tabs or some other format with multiple pages? Personally, these turn me off as they seem disorganized, they take forever to read, and they always sound like scams.

Thanks for the answers everyone! It's still crazy to me that these pages actually work.

What a nice article. I LOVE case studies which are well presented like this one. Thanks for sharing!

Weird, I just sent this blog post link to another person with the same question.
Long scrolling narrow pages have always irked me. The design goes against every design sensibility and principal. It's the kind of feeling you know in your bones. But lots of A/B testing has shown that it works. And I couldn't find a designer that challenged this incumbent with a better design. Until NOW.
Check out 37Signal's post on their tests to see what performed BETTER:http://37signals.com/svn/posts/2991-behind-the-scenes-ab-testing-part-3-finaltheir previous posts part 2 and part go into more detail. But wow, do the results surprise you? They made me happy and relieved all at the same time.

When I first got interested in marketing online I read a lot of tutorials on how to best do affiliate marketing. They all suggest a huge long page of copy like this. The funny thing is, most of these pages that I see are selling books teaching other people how to do affiliate marketing!
These always look like spam to me. I expect that when I go to leave the page I'm going to get javascript saying, "Do you really want to go?"
Personally I would never buy a product from a page like this.

They always look like spam to me but I have seen that viperchill uses them and I know he tests continuously
edit: Shoemoney does this same tactic with his videos.

me to. I still keep on getting them

Hi Christopher,
I suspect that there are a huge amount of these types of sites that aren't spam but the point that I was trying to make is that because a large proportion of them are spam, my perception is that I instantly don't trust the credibility of any site using the same format.
This is an observation on my perception of the sites and not a reflection on all of them.

All that was needed was a compelling set of training DVDs and perhaps three or four years to accumulate the email addresses. Then, to keep it going, put a new series of training DVDs. The topic can be just about anything, but various types of sports training are quite common. Most probably don't do much, but a few do really well.
Best,
Christopher -
In that case, John and I can partner up and start opening up a dozen of these sites and quit our day jobs.
-
I'm sure there are many that are spam, but the ones with which I am most familiar are not. The DA is not great, but all the incoming links are legit. They sell instructional DVDs and gross about $10K per month. Most of the traffic is email driven. There is zero Adsense and ad revenue. The one web pages goes on for pages and pages of scrolling with one purpose--to sell the DVDs, or failing that, to get an email address so they can sell the DVDs next month.
Anyway, that format can work. Sure are ugly, though.
Best,
Christopher -
In regards to the SEO world, the site owners that use these type of mile-long pages seem to be all part of a group with affiliate links to each others sites.
Somewhere along the line I have ended up on their mailing list and every couple of weeks I get an email from another miracle solution to driving relevant traffic towards your website. For me the common theme for all of these sites is that they are pretty much Black Hat and shady.
Based on the sites that I have seen using this one-page format, my perception is that any site I see with the same format is Spam. This of course may not be true but personally I wouldn't see any site using this format as credible.
-
I can't cite any A/B studies so I wouldn't know if they generate more conversions, but I do know of several of these that do generate good income. One conversion that is common with the ones I know include a freebie (maybe some type of report) in exchange for an email address. Those large lists of opt-in email addresses are gold.
Best,
Christopher -
I have never had a client with such a page, but they are very popular. I can understand how a percentage of people are continuously enticed by the presentation and read further down.
My best guess is it's like junk mail. If you can find a way to present it to enough people, a small percentage convert and profit margins are extremely high. This site sells a service for $97 and I would guess it is all profit.
With respect to other formats, the single page presentation forces readers into a funnel. Sure it will cause a lot of readers to bounce, but they probably achieve the best conversion rate by forcing readers into a single funnel (i.e. scroll down the page and not get lost on various site pages).
Yes, it seems like a complete scam, but people still fall for scams every single day, and they will 100 years from now too.

Photos or Video Best for Landing Pages?
My real estate brokerage firm is promoting a listing via advertising on LinkedIn. The advertising links to a landing page: http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/MidtownLawOfficeSublet3300SFBelowMarket Rather than photos, the landing page has a 1 minute video. So far we have had about 10 visits to the page. Visitors leave the landing page after a few seconds. So they are not looking at the video. Would it be better to replace the video with photos? Or is engagement generally better with video? My thinking is that business owners may not have the patience or the time for a video and they would more likely have the time and willingness to click on photos. I would be willing to test this further, but at $5/click it could get costly! Any thoughts?

How would you encourage phone calls rather than email enquiries?
Just that really - we're getting on average around 80% online enquiries, and 15% calls. Calls convert better so would prefer calls. What steps would you put in place to increase calls? Ours is a lead generation site - we're a mortgage broker. So far we have a click to call button on the quote page which loads on mobile devices and doesn't display when the call centre is shut. We get traffic from organic and PPC. I'm trying to come up with a bit of a plan to address this. Thanks, Amelia

Optimising /product/ pages for our 15,000 product ecommerce store.
Hi guys! We're constantly working on evolving our /product/ pages on the site, however some times it's pretty easy to get lost in your own mess. Especially when the sites consists of 15,000+ products. So it's pretty painful to handcraft every single page. So I thought I'd jump in here to see if anyone had any suggestions for stuff we're missing, and or should improve? These are product pages: http://www.warcom.com.au/products/9954_draytek-vigor-120-single-port-adsl-122-modem http://www.warcom.com.au/products/49884_warcom-deluxe-double-lcd-monitor-stand---free-shipping There is a few issues we're aware of already.. Negatives: To many links in the left menus. To many links in the footer. Positives: We recently included rich snippets.. We're always testing out colors and styles. We're always testing meta data. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

How to track full path of website visitors until conversion, not just landing page?
hi, This is my first question in the forums and I'm looking forward to be part of a great SEO community. I was wondering ow to track full path of website visitors until conversion, not just landing page? I've been using Wordpress jetpack site stats for while, which shows great data like keywords used in google, landing page etc. But I would like to have access to the full path for each separate visitors (including their IP address and country is possible) to improve my website and conversions. Example: step 1: Visitor X types "seo" on Google step 2: visitor lands on my homepage step 3: visitor visits to order page and buys Is there such tool available as a Wordpress plugin? Or do I have to use Google analytics for this? thank you for your help, Marc

Call to actions buttons
Redoing my site at the moment and placing a few call's to action around it. The calls to action are pretty basic, along the lines of 'click here to get a quote', when you click you get taken to an anchor towards the bottom of the same page that takes you to a contact form. I've based the Calls to action on just a brightly coloured gif image that has text written on to it (not in code but added via photoshop)? This the right way to go, or should I be putting the text actually on my page and using a background coloured element to do it? The same image is used across several pages (got a couple of these images which I use across the site) and thinking it's easier to do it this way rather than code? Adding alt text to images 'Click here to get quote on X' (X being product) and also using img title tag for when mouse i hovering over - Click here to get a quote! Don't want to get hit by any dupe content issue for using the same image on multiple pages etc (I could always no index the folder where the call to action images are stored if this helps?) This sound ok to you pros?

Page Speed & SERPS
What impact does page speed have on rankings in the search engine? If I have a Site that is heavy with Pictures, Onsite videos and various scripts that would ultimately be of good use to a viewer but takes time to load. VS A Site that has pictures that are fully optimized for the web or eliminated to save on load time, Videos that are hosted on Sites like VIMEO or You Tube and eliminate scripts where possible and use css3. Note the site loads faster and is better for mobil but doesn't have the same feel of the first site but is useful to the user. Now let's say that both sites are virtual twins in terms of their link profile, age, content quality, location and citations. Will one rank better because of load time? It's the quest for creating the ultimate site for users while delivering it within the fastest time possible.

How Do I Create a Google Analytics Dashboard for My Designer To Monitor Landing Page A/B Testing
Hello All, We recently started doing some "AdWords Experiments" using A/B testing of our search landing pages. My web design team does not have access to our AdWords account, but they do have "user" access to our Google Analytics account. What I need to figure out how to do is setup an easy dashboard (or custom report) that will show them at a quick glance how the two versions of their page are performing in terms of: Goal Completions (Conversions) where the specific page is the entrance/landing page. Bounce Rate Time spent on site where the specific page is the entrance/landing page. Pages viewed where the specific page is the entrance/landing page. Possibly a way to see the most popular page visited 'next' after starting on the specific entrance/landing page Anything else that might be useful The two URLs would be like: http://www.domain.com/search/testa/

Landing Page for High Ticket Items
Hi Everyone 🙂 We are an auto dealership and our website is designed to capture leads. I'm looking into designing some landing pages and I understand that we should test anything we try, but I don't really know where to start. Basically, we want to capture name, email, and phone # on our page. What sort of incentive should I offer people to provide us with their information? Typically, auto dealers offer up a "Free Quote" incentive. I'm wondering if anyone else has an idea for something else to try. Thanks!
