I'm pretty tired of the term "10x" whether it's applied to content, marketers, or hell engineers. There's a huge toxic idea that in order to have 10x content, you must have the team and other resources to pull this off. In fact, in many cases and many of Rand's examples, there are big teams with lots of resources putting it together, and this actively discourages those who struggle to get the basics implemented due to bandwidth and other resources. (Which I think the examples misalign with the quote, which I generally agree with that sentiment.)

To me, 10x content is just getting your community/customers/visitors to the information they actually want to know about. Think about how many badly put together sites rank in the Google Knowledge Box. Google isn't (necessarily) putting big value on how gorgeous the execution is, but how useful it is for what people actually want to know. We should be building content (and our sites) around what people want to know. The crap content out there serves no actual person, and it never has.

The information changes to a completely 2015 page are set to go live this week. But, I do happen to have the hotel link: book your 2015 hotel room.

FWIW, Wired recently did a study that showed if you're coming from the UK, it's best to buy your flight 53 days out.

Yes, search engines definitely know that subdomains are hooked to your domain, and there's evidence that search engines will count links toward a subdomain to your domain. However, there's speculation that those links are slightly discounted in the level of authority they pass -- they are a stronger signal to your subdomain -- and it's still best practice for your SEO to put your blog on a subfolder instead of a subdomain.

Wow, this is quite the pickle. The good news is that you are correct that justinchina.co.uk is causing your issues; the bad news is that it looks like your site's been hacked. Okay, first take a deep breath and have a hug. I've been there, and it sucks. But let's work through this. (I'm going to link to some resources as I'm not sure where you are in your SEO knowledge journey.)

Right now, your site www.petmedicalcenter.com is being 301 redirected (a permanent redirect and the source of why your rankings dropped) to justinchina.co.uk, which is giving a 200 or okay code. (Google is probably a bit confused as your WordPress SEO plug-in is showing www.petmedicalcenter.com as the rel=canonical page, which is in your favor.)

First, to completely verify that you've been hacked, I need you to go to your .htaccess file. This file is located at http://www.petmedicalcenter.com/.htaccess and currently blocked from my outsider view. I'm pretty certain in there, you'll see the code that's 301'ing it to justinchina.co.uk. You'll need to remove this code, just don't do it yet as we need to stop the hacker first. Since you've been able to log into the WordPress, the hacker hasn't change your passwords and such. (I highly recommend backing up your entire site so you have a copy before you do anything else!)

When I was digging into your site, I believe that your GoDaddy account was hacked and the 301 redirect was created that way, instead of your site being hacked. The reason I believe this is is because the IP on both your site and the duplicate are the same. This means that whomever is behind justinchina.co.uk has taken control of your domain too. I've attached screenshots, but you can look at the live data: http://who.is/whois/justinchina.co.uk and http://who.is/whois/petmedicalcenter.com. It's highly likely that the information for JustinChina is fake information.

First, you need to see if you can log into GoDaddy using your current credentials. If you can, you need to go into your account information and verify that your information is correct (email address, billing address, phone, etc.). If it not, you need to update it before you start doing anything else. (Don't send your password reset to the hacker's email!) Then you need to change your GoDaddy password. Next you need to contact GoDaddy and get your domain back. (I assume you also hosted with GoDaddy since that's where it's registered through.)

Where you might run into a problem is if your GoDaddy log-in doesn't work. Then you need to go directly to GoDaddy and give them all the information about who you are and what's happened to your site. If you are in this situation, you are at the mercy of GoDaddy's customer support to get your domain back.

Once GoDaddy gives you control back of your domain, then make sure to change all your WordPress or other domain-related passwords. (If you are using your GoDaddy log-in password for anything else, make sure to change it too!) Then go and remove that 301 redirect in the .htaccess file. And then make sure your WordPress, WordPress plug-ins, and WordPress themes are completely updated.

I took a look at your site's code, and I couldn't see any malicious code inserted into your site. The good news is that it looks like a pretty clean hack into your GoDaddy account and a 301 redirect, so once you have your domain back, there's less to do. But I do recommend going over your code with a fine-tooth comb, just in case.

Your rankings should recover over time. Unfortunately, it will just take time, but you can use it as a benchmark that everything's going good with your site.

Primary keyword in that URL example from the Learn SEO section refers not to the most important keyword on your site or the most important topic on your site, but to the most important keyword on that specific page that the URL is pointing to. I believe that's where the confusion lies. Hope this helps.

I'll start off with a few recommendations. The first being our Beginner's Guide to SEO, which will give you a great foundational knowledge of all the things you should be thinking about. The SEO developer's checksheet is also a great resource.

I won't weigh too much on tools as I use Moz's and have bias. Fresh Web Explorer for alerts and content tracking and Followerwonk for social graphing on Twitter are some of my favorites for what I do. (Which is probably quite different than what you do.)

For project management, Trello is definitely one of the easiest ones I've found to use and a favorite. Basecamp's also pretty good for cross-company collaboration. I use GDocs all the time and Evernote for specific note-taking, usually projects or ideas.

Doorway pages are pages set up with redirection, spoofing, or cloaking to get some SEO benefit that's usually short-term gains and typically not so kosher. Basically, the visitor thinks they're getting one thing and ends up with another.

Landing pages are any webpages on your site which you're driving traffic to.

Looking at your site, I noticed a couple things:

Your site speed is pretty slow. You can use pingdom.com to check your site speed. This is a great study by Jon Colman about site speed and how much it actually affects your site. I noticed that you're running WordPress, and here's some tips on how to speed up your WP site. Google definitely factors in speed, and this could be affecting how the bots reach your site (or don't reach it) and account for the flux week-to-week. You are correct in that it shouldn't be that dramatic of a change week-to-week.

I also noticed that your homepage was a little overly optimized for keywords. As search engines start getting more semantic, you want to optimize more for the user. Definitely don't kill all the keywords, but balance is the key. Read through the copy as a visitor, not just the SEO and industry expert.

If you're wondering when we, at Moz, will be posting something, Dr. Pete will be digging into the data tomorrow and have something up soon. (He tweeted that today he's looking at some actual penguins in the zoo with his family.

Google reads a subdomain as a separate site from the domain or another subdomain. That said, Google also realizes when sites are from the same network, which is how they penalized private link networks. It will certainly improve your authority, but it's unknown how much the link will be discounted due to the connection between the two sites. (That is, after all, Google's proprietary knowledge and secrets about how they do their algo. We can only make educated guesses.)

Some great suggestions already! But I'd add that sometimes it just takes time for Google to catch spammy practices.

Definitely a frustrating problem!

After taking a look at your site, it might actually be overly optimized for the term "swinger." Specifically, it shows up on your homepage (in the various sections) in the text 122 times. This is an older, but still good WBF from Cyrus talking about over optimization and how it can hurt you.

A quick look at your backlink profile for your homepage shows not very links that are followed and aren't on low-quality and potentially spammy directories, as you mentioned. Building quality links back to your site will definitely help. Getting more content built will definitely let you build links a lot better.

When it comes to content and social media in the adult space, PornHub is really leading the innovation. They wrote a great article about what they do for our blog. Definitely when it comes to content, part of the problem with your site is that everyone is behind a log-in and thus, behind closed doors for Googlebot. I haven't seen anyone in the swinger space really own content and social; and that could definitely set your company apart.

We've definitely seen a lot of evidence that EMDs do not work the way they once did, and they could very well be hurting your rankings for your main domain. Dr. Pete wrote a great post about this a while ago that's still very applicable. Seems like since your products are related, it would be much better to integrate the sites together and put them in a subfolder of your main domain instead of separate sites. You'd, of course, want to 301 redirect and all that jazz to maintain most of your link equity and ranking signals.

You should check out the webinar about when we changed from SEOmoz.org to Moz.com. Our SEO-at-the-time Ruth went through her process and addressed a lot of things like DA drop due to losing some link authority, etc.

If the pages are worth the effort of 301'ing them, I wouldn't worry about page speed for them. Besides link authority from those old pages, you should also look for traffic, since 301s are actually more about seamless experience for the people coming to your site.

Yes, on social sharing -- when posting to Facebook, Pinterest, etc. -- OG tags will override your meta description tag. Best practice is to have both, and in most cases, you'll probably find that the information will the same for the page.

As far as the Moz Crawl Diagnostics, unfortunately, it doesn't read OG tags right now. We are working on improvements for better suggestions, and more types of meta information is definitely on the to-do list.

301s only cause a slight loss in link authority, and is what you want to do longterm. Your current 302s are actually worse, and doing nothing for your link authority to the pages they're redirecting to since 302=temporary, which tells Google you're still making up your mind.

When Moz stopped doing consulting, we put together a list of recommended companies in order to drive that traffic there and then to great consulting companies. This allowed for context for the visitor -- compared to direct redirection where a visitor might think they stumbled into some weird click scam -- and for us to give a link and specific information.

So I'm completely bias as I'm a Mozzer and one of the Mozzers who runs MozCon.

With that said, MozCon is definitely my favorite conference. Last year was both the first year I helped run MozCon and the first year I attended it. I knew all the pieces, and I was blown away by the caliber of the content and the speakers. The topic runs a little intermediate advanced, especially if the topic is primarily SEO-focused, and the speakers themselves are incredibly smart and true experts in their topics. Most conferences to me are really hit or miss, but MozCon was one where I felt that I learned at every session. (I've been in the industry for 6 years.) The single session, one room format with keynote-style talks really suites my learning style and my need for community (live-tweeter right here). (And Seattle is awesome!!)

My second favorite one is SearchFest PDX. Their speaker quality is superb. Though you have to pick between sessions. I found the community pretty great here too. And the year I went, it was right by the food trucks which I can't stay away from in PDX. I felt the sessions were really tailored by topic so you could chose to go on the track you knew and learn something or skip around to learn something new.

If you want to talk to Matt Cutts or get all fannish around him, SMX is the conference to go to. As except for the "celebs" of search or a specific keynote, it's panels, speakers get less time to talk, which I go back and forth how much I like that. I find panels, due to the sheer numbers of speakers a conference organizer must find to talk on a similar topic, can sometimes be a large hit or miss between speakers. And they can also crash quickly if the moderators aren't on top of it.

SES has been a bit more a beginner's conference in my mind. I've found a lot more SMB and SEOs starting their careers going to these than other conferences. It's all panels with a few exceptions like SMX. Both SES and SMX accept pitches, and sometimes, you can get some rougher talks due to beginning speakers. (We ALL have to start somewhere!)

I haven't been to PubCon or any of Distilled's conferences (SearchLove, LinkLove), though I've heard PubCon to be more like an SMX and SearchLove to be closer to MozCon in styles.

Anyway, hope you found that useful. Feel free to ask about specifics you're considering, and really, I can answer about anything about MozCon.

If you live and die by search marketing than MozCon is the place for you. Our content is intermediate/advanced topics and covers for many different types of markets from small business owners to medium companies and agencies or huge companies. You should be able to walk away with a lot of information directly applicable to your work.

Some people MozCon isn't for:

1. Super beginners -- our audience is intermediate to advanced, and it would probably be over their heads.

2. People who aren't into inbound marketing. If you're not into SEO, social media, content marketing, analytics, or conversion rate optimization, MozCon probably isn't of interest to you.

Actually, the videos were included in the MozCon ticket price this year, so all attendees will get them!

Everyone's 301 redirect suggestions are correct. However, exact match domains may not be worth grabbing all of them for SEO. There's been lessening returns.

One thing you might consider doing is building some goodwill with people who are searching for that service and those who provide it. When Moz (then SEOmoz) decided to stop doing SEO consulting, we were still ranking really high for it and people thought that's what we did. Instead of just 404, we created our recommended companies page, which gave some goodwill and helped people out.

I took a look at your site, and I ran a report in OpenSiteExplorer on your backlinks. It doesn't look at all like Penguin, like others suggested below.

My suggestions:

1. Take a look and see what your competitors are doing. If this is recent, we've definitely see fresh/newly updated content be pushed to the front of SERPs temporarily and then die back down to lower numbers.

2. Make sure your content is getting updated.

3. Your content looked pretty thin. While in the past ranking competitively for this term was pretty easy, when I did a search (granted even incognito, I'm in the US), I got many results from UK government sites and wikipedia ranked pretty highly. Without solid, uniquely interesting content and strong, relevant links, it'll be very hard to beat these sites.

It shouldn't matter at all. If you're worried the sites are low quality, you might consider no following, but press link pages are pretty common.

All keyword rank tracking software, including Moz's, requires you to input the keywords yourself and then they will tell you if any pages (and which pages) are ranking the highest for that keyword. See attached screenshot from Moz Pro rank tracking inside campaigns. This is why in addition to ranking tracking, you need to do keyword research to populate this list of terms.

It's also important to look at how that publication does links and make sure that you aren't pushing them to do something they won't do for anyone. Recently, I was working with a publication that was happy to link to how-to or further information articles, but did not want to link directly to any brand mentions.

putting on moderator hat You can totally leave the URL for your site. We have several adult site customers. We just ask that you, as you already have, leave a warning that it could be NSFW for some people due to the content. And having a direct example with URL will probably get you better answers from the community.

Unfortunately, not all the social networks can read 301 redirects. Everyone's hoping that as they grow, they will read 301s and keep social shares. Twitter seems to be able to read 301s, but not Facebook or the small networks. You actually have to change the code in the share buttons to leave them at the old URL. Read more about how to do this.

You may also chose which content is more important to keep those social shares and change the rest, just depending on your needs. Also consider how important showing those social shares are. If you only have a few, it might not be worth it and can actually harm people's opinion if your content has low shares.

Google is super fast when it comes to the main, most important stuff on your domain. It's still indexing stuff from the old SEOmoz.org domain because we have a ton of pages! and frankly, some of them aren't very popular. We also made the decision not to redirect every single page and killed a ton of them. The less popular pages are lingering (though with the right 301 redirects, we're still getting that traffic to the still important to us pages) with SEOmoz.org, either waiting to be indexed at Moz.com or tossed out as they no longer exist.

For dealing with people who are scraping your site, make sure you have canonical tags implemented on your pages for your shiny new https site. Most scrapers steal the code, so they grab those too.

Sorry to hear that your site's been blocked by Facebook. That's terrible!

I haven't dealt with this myself, but I did some digging and it looks like you aren't alone. Unfortunately, it looks like it's also very hard to get Facebook to unblock you. Facebook uses the companies Securi Site Check to make sure sites aren't scammy, spammy, or hacked. Securi looks like an aggregator of many security check sites, but that it will tell you which security check sites still have you on their blacklist and which ones you need to reach out to get whitelisted. You'll want to do this first before you do anymore outreach to Facebook.

After you are sure you're whitelisted with the security check sites, then contact Facebook. I found this case in Facebook's help threads about a company that was able to successfully unblock their site. Looks like he had his brand "like" all of Facebook's official pages to help businesses, which sent a trust signal to Facebook that the brand was legit. and then commented on all of them to get his page unblocked. Sadly, it looks like you have to be a very squeaky wheel to get anything done. If you have a Facebook ad rep, you also might reach out to them after making sure your site's whitelisted on those security sites.

Sadly, it does look like people did end up switching domains or doing some redirect action when Facebook wouldn't unblock their sites. But I'd use that as your very last resort.

There's some impression, when it comes to customers/visitors, that .coms and other TLDs that we're "used" to are still more trustworthy. If you're second guessing it, you should probably go with your gut. You can always buy the .BID TLD and use it later.

My very best educated guess (after talking with dev friends here at Moz) is that CloudFront is supposed to be used for long-term storage. This means the content isn't expected to change frequently. This is great for images and other static things. However, this is also a signal to Google not to crawl your site as often as it won't be changing that often.

I also suggest using a service like bit.ly for shortening URLs & grabbing your own custom, even shorter domain. At Moz, we have mz.cm, which lets us get even smaller on Twitter and the link.

Any traffic coming into your site, you can track on GA. You probably want to set up custom tags and do some filters for what campaigns you're running.

At their basics, URL shortners are a 301 redirect. So if you really wanted to do the extra work, you could have a 301 redirect of say http://example.com/awesome to http://example.com/mysiteisrad/everyonelovesit/youarecool. It's just easier to use a 3rd party -- and since you own the domain and are pointing the traffic to the site you own, you can track it in GA -- like bit.ly to do the heavy lifting for you.

Most feeds, like Feedburner, and blogs solve this issue with the canonical URL tag. Your post is marked as the canonical one and your feed a copy, which eliminates the duplicate content issue. You might also dig this post about advanced canonical tags.

Twitter is a different issue. Google doesn't treat Twitter like websites, but like a social platform. Additionally, you can only post 140 characters on it. Though I do encourage you to not just put a feed to Twitter, but instead craft it to be interesting for your audience or a call out for them to actually read it. I wouldn't worry about Twitter as duplicate content at all.

Canonicals on every page is definitely the best practice.

As to the Moz mystery, probably whomever wrote the specs for that page forgot to include canonical tags. Even our SEO is far from perfect.

So as you probably noticed, Facebook's algo has been hitting brand's pretty hard when it comes to post reach recently. The only thing I'm seeing across the board that actually works is paying for your post to be promoted, and then usually the organic rate goes up. Ignite did a big study where they found an exact equation for how much you pay and how it increases, not only ad views, but organic reach too. Despite what Facebook says.

That said, there are "tricks" that some people have noticed that help you more reach. I'd equate these tricks to SEO tricks back in the day, like keyword stuffing, only they're perhaps less annoying. These tricks will help you see a little increase, but eventually Facebook changes the algo to get rid of them or essentially fix a bug in their algo. One of these tricks is tagging your band in your post. My theory behind why this works is because Facebook finds a post with others tagged it more valuable (brands can only tag other pages). We tried this trick with Moz's account, and we saw only a negligible difference, much less than yours!

There's currently no issues on our end with our API. Since MozCheck.com is not actually run by us and runs by using our API, you'd have to contact them in order to understand what's up with their site. Sorry for not being able to give you better news.

Took a quick look at the page, and nothing majorly technical jumped out at me as preventing or hindering page rankings. I always suggest making sure your site's set up in Moz Analytics and looking at the crawl diagnostics, which show a lot of common technical problems. (If you haven't already, of course.) I did notice that on your example, the title tag is too long and Google truncates it.

For e-commerce, the big separator between leaders is content. The more you can create unique content about your products -- start with the most important ones -- the better off you will be. Make sure you have unique product descriptions. People love video. And people also love solutions or knowledge about how to use the product and what it will solve for them. You do a great job at listing the specs and features, but what's the value add? A quick look at the competition in the SERPs shows that your competitors, they aren't doing a good at this, and it would set you apart.

Additionally, I also noticed that your site in general has a pretty low domain authority, and the product page in question doesn't have any backlinks. These will definitely affect your rankings. Before jumping on building links, I highly suggest reading our beginner's guide to link building, which will walk you through the pros, cons, and best practices to build links as you don't want to get into trouble with Google over links.

I'd test a couple things:

1. Stay off the page for a week or so. I'd post a message to the followers before doing this to let them know this is happening. Something like "this page is vacation and will be back XXX."

2. Since it sounds like you're going to be posting good content going forward, I'd suggest taking out ads to push your content out. You can even select it to show them to your existing audience. You don't have to spend much money. (I've done ads for nonprofits were I spent $20 tops.) This will help you get that reach, but also show that your content is relevant.

Eventually that expired domain will be removed from OSE and won't show as a backlink to your site. Every time we publish an Mozscape index, it's completely fresh and reverified link information. Hope this helps!

We got the same warning here at Moz in WMT. While responsive isn't affecting rankings yet, it's coming and Google's letting us know ahead of time. Additionally, if your competitors aren't mobile-optimized, this may be a great way to get a leg up on them.

1. Honestly, I have no idea if that will work. But it never hurts to experiment. And it sounds like you're in a position where nothing is really happening and it's not going to hurt you to try.

2. Well, if you aren't willing to spend the money, there's really no other way to boost the post to get engagement. The average number of followers brands have on Facebook is around 13,000, which 400 of them isn't a small segment, and Facebook is a Catch-22 of the only way your posts get more traction is if people are liking them. In August, Facebook also upped how much they will show one user your paid promotion from 1 time a day to 2.

Earlier this year, Jim Tobin at Ignite did some tests/stats and found that your Daily Organic Reach = -22 + (Total Likes x 5.399%) + (Daily Paid Reach x 0.327%) + (Page Views x 0.416%) + (Weekend [1 if yes, 0 if no] x -194.4) + (Posts Per Day x 81.08). Which means that Paid Reach factors significantly into whether or not people will see your posts, regardless of quality.
