We did just update OpenSiteExplorer this afternoon, but I believe it is fully rolled out with updated data.
We don't have the number of servers that Google or Bing have, and we're not able to crawl as deeply as they do. That said, we do try to crawl the most important links on the web, and provide metrics you are not able to get from the search engines. We update OSE about once a month. We have more information about the index in this afternoon's blog post at http://www.seomoz.org/blog/november-mozscape-index-is-live
Hope this helps!
Dana, just a quick note that it wasn't an instant recalculation on DA and PA. You happened to check right as we rolled out the new OSE index today (see the main blog for a post about that).
Dr. Pete also has a good post about this at http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-many-links-is-too-many
Agreed. I'd spend the time writing content for your own site and building up your own site's authority, rather than building up the authority of another site.
Are you aware of links such as http://palomacosta.objectis.net/Qualidade/Members/phylishastings/fat-japanese-girl that are pointing to your site?
I've asked our local expert to step in, but my first couple of comments are this:
Home page is way overstuffed for Edmonton. The text isn't very natural, and there are a bunch of keywords at the bottom.
Second comment is I can't tell what is your address. The footer has one address, but the about page has a different address (even the internet address), and then when I search your phone number on Google, I see yet a different suite number and address. Consistent, accurate citations are real important in local search.
Hi Vikas,
That may be a tough one. I can speak from the other side of things. I don't submit guest posts, but I do review them for YouMoz so I get to see a lot of submissions from people wanting to post on the SEOmoz site.
You may have a difficult time finding a place that posts high-quality posts, allows followed links, and posts them quickly. The higher the quality blog, the more submissions there are to go through, and the more time it takes before something gets published.
At YouMoz, we try to not outright reject posts, but to spend time to help people craft a better post that will be a success on the blog. Some of our best authors are ones who had posts initially rejected, but were given suggestions for improvement. This does take time, and makes for a longer queue, but also makes for better posts.
When you are looking to submit a blog post to any site, I would highly recommend having the post reviewed by at least one other person before you submit, running your text through Word to look for spelling and grammar errors, making sure that all of the images you use are OK to use (you either have permission to use the copyrighted image, you've included proper attribution to a Creative Commons license, you developed the image yourself, etc.), and that you've followed all of the guidelines for the particular site to which you are submitting. Time spent upfront making a post can help reduce time spent in a review queue.
You can give it a try (up to 3000 URLs) at http://pro.seomoz.org/tools/crawl-test
We have a help hub at http://www.seomoz.org/help which has a lot of information, plus links to our weekly welcome webinar that walks you through our software. That should be a good start!
Hi David,
If you download the CSV, you'll be able to see the referring link. My guess is that there's a badly-formed internal link in your site.
Hi! The most common reasons for this are discussed at https://seomoz.zendesk.com/entries/409821-why-isn-t-my-site-being-crawled-you-re-not-crawling-all-my-pages. If that doesn't solve your problem, please visit our help hub at http://www.seomoz.org/help and contact our help team to open a ticket.
Hi Menelik,
The explanation is that we are separate from Google, and have our own servers and crawlers. Our server farm isn't nearly as big as Google's, and doesn't crawl as fast. Open Site Explorer updates about once a month, and won't show you all of the links you see in GWT. However, we do add more information than you will see in Google with regards to metrics, and you can see link profiles of other sites that you do not own and have not verified in GWT.
Hope this helps!
Can you show u a screenshot of the 66k links? I'm seeing Total Links of 845 for the root domain, from 15 Linking Root Domains on OSE right now.
What industry? Some industries, such as web design, won't have a local listing even for a local business. Sharing a URL would be helpful, but I realize you may not be able to do that in public Q&A.
So sorry to report that it's not going to be that easy. Google isn't passing along that data, no matter what analytics program is used. Webtrends, etc. isn't going to give you this information either because Google is just not sending it; it's not that GA is suppressing it.
Closing this thread so we can just keep everything in Irving's thread.
Hi! We actually had an outage for about two hours this morning while we did some upgrades. Are you still having a problem now?
A quick look in OSE shows a bunch of backlinks of low quality that appear to have been removed, and nothing of quality. Was there a site on this domain before your site?
It looks like that's a real competitive term in the UK. What I'd do is look at the top ten sites and ask myself "what content can I put together that will beat out the content that's on the top sites?" Most of the sites I see are one page lead generation forms. It's going to be tough to make a name for yourself with all of that junk out there.
Can you do something like http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/ppi-loan-insurance where you have a lot of good, quality content? This will make it useful for the users, give people a reason to link to you, and give you great long-tail content.
I'm going to close this discussion so we can consolidate into a single thread at http://www.seomoz.org/q/google-launches-their-disallow-tool
There should be more information there. Mind sending an email to help@seomoz.org? We'll help you figure it out from that end. Thanks!
Do you have the www in your campaign? We're looking for exact URL, so if you're ranking on www and you don't have www in your campaign that would be a reason why.
If that doesn't answer the question, send a note to help@seomoz.org and we'll take a look at it for you.
Hi Brandon,
It should tell you -- scroll over to the referral column. There's more information in this help hub page at http://www.seomoz.org/help/fixing-crawl-diagnostic-issues
As well as Google Analytics and Google Adsense IDs.
I personally prefer to have links to my site on pages that Google already knows about, not pages where I need to pay someone to create a ton of automated links so those links get noticed.
There are forums that may speak highly of this software, but SEOmoz isn't going to be one of those forums, it's just not in our philosophy. For more information on the viewpoint of many of the people around here, check out the beginner's guide to SEO and the chapter on building links at http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo/growing-popularity-and-links
Hi, and welcome to SEOmoz!
I'd suggest reading our Beginner's Guide to SEO, especially the chapter on Link Building. SEOmoz is focused on tools to help make your own website better, and to help educate webmasters. We're less focused on tools to strictly build links, though you will find many blog posts on our site in the link building category that discuss how to build links.
Regarding crawling on a daily basis, do you mean the crawl of your site? If so, you can do a crawl test of two sites a day, up to 3000 URLs each, at http://pro.seomoz.org/tools/crawl-test. If you mean Open Site Explorer, we don't have the processing power to update that every day.
I'd remove all of the low-quality links like that.
If they have a little bit more to spend, I'd recommend EGOL's suggestion above, and then to look at something like page.ly for hosting. The basic WP hosting there is about $25 a month, and they take care of all of the upgrades for you. I worked with it once a couple of years ago, and it was the easiest WP install I've ever done.
Also, if you use the CSV of your errors, SEOmoz will tell you where those 404s came from too.
I don't know the reason myself, but will ask when I'm back in the office on Monday. You know that you can filter out for just followed links, right?
Are you by chance viewing www in one and non-www in the other? If that's not the case, please email help@seomoz.org and we'll help you figure it out via the help system.
Thanks!
I did a search for "french quarter" on that domain, and found a cached link at http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:JBWoP_J3zQcJ:www.derbymadness.com/my-profile/demolition-derby-groups/viewbulletins%3Fgroupid%3D12+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us. Looks like the page has since been edited/removed and is nothing to worry about now.
How it happened was that the link was there when Roger crawled, but he only crawls once a month or so, and the link was removed since the last crawl.
Did you know we have a feature request forum at https://seomoz.zendesk.com/forums/293194-seomoz-pro-feature-requests where you could submit that idea?
Do keep in mind that we don't have access to Google's algorithm either, so it would be our idea of how it is influenced, not what Google thinks about it.
The couple of times I've found my content duplicated on a Wordpress.com domain, they've removed the content or banned the blog (which was entirely copies of other peoples' content) right away.
They might be grabbing the information out of a table. I don't use rich snippets or any fancy markup on Strike Models, but if you do a site:strikemodels.com you'll see a similar SERP for some of our interior pages, and it's pulling from the table of product information we have.
I can't help with the technical information, but I do want to mention to be sure that everything is disclosed in a privacy statement, and that you're not doing anything to violate Google Analytics' terms of service about personally identifiable information (if you're using GA).
When we crawl, we don't look at a site map, but instead go through and crawl your site. Somehow there must be links to those URLs that aren't excluded in robots.txt that we're picking up. If you care to share your site here the community can look at it and give you some ideas. If you prefer not to share your site, drop a note to help@seomoz.org and we'll help you figure it out that way.
Have you checked out our Help Hub page about rankings at http://www.seomoz.org/help/rankings? It offers several reasons why what you see and what we report may be different. Hope that helps!
