Using ahrefs, I am seeing 880 backlinks to the site. Of these, there are a couple of bad ones (the main porn site with keyword anchor text and 99 links). For that one the whois data is all available and he is registered with gDdy, is in San Diego, etc. (Easy way to pressure the take down). The one with bloom in the name is the same way. I did not look at all.

Overall, you have some good links here from other photography sites, etc. I would send a note to the webmasters of these sites and ask them to remove them. If they do not respond in a week, send it again and each time keep track. I would send via email and attach a read receipt. If they don't respond I would report abuse to the registrar gDdy in both cases here.

You are not at a place IMO where you need to use the disavow tool, etc. Write up a template email, put in the 5 to 10 offending sites and send them the email. Keep a log and copies of any and all correspondence with dates, etc.

Having dealt with photographers for many years I would say that it is, but does not have to be. Obviously, there are more Spring and Summer marriages, school pics during school year, etc. Many photographers put their businesses in too narrow a niche and by virtue of that limit themselves to other opportunities. If a photographer is to build a name for themselves it will typically start in one city. They have to become known to a level that someone will say, "This family photo was shot by Bill Photo." But, there are many other areas to be explored: If a photographer is digitally savvy, the real estate market loves a person who understands what parallax is and how to best display a home for sale. They pay very well (Maybe a low of $150 for the lower end real estate up to $1,000's for high end homes). Be willing to set up drop boxes, etc. and teach agents and mls' how to retrieve photos and be prepared to assist them early in the process. Seasoned realtors are good at this, but new ones need help. You never know which new one will become a top producer.

Industrial/Commercial photography is another area where they can make money and reduce seasonality. Make it easy on them to get what they want and then have it available when they need a copy, etc. (Get away from the "I own the copyright and a copy is $500 BS - charge a fee, but make the money on the schedule time, difficulty of shoot and setting, etc. - no one likes to feel nickel and dimed).

Like any other business, you must be telling people you are there and constantly working the sales pipeline. If you are an "artist" and cannot be bothered with the mundane....good luck.

Simon is correct, I was being over simplistic and imprecise. From GWMT: Google supports frames and iframes to the extent that it can. Frames can cause problems for search engines because they don't correspond to the conceptual model of the web.

The content can be indexed but it will typically be from the originating url as opposed to the destination url.

The question was: How does the iframe effect my SEO? Can I just optimize the main domain for search? I want the spreadshirt shop to be found under the domain name (www.blowingminds.de)

As it stands now, from looking at www.blowingminds.de, there is nothing outside the iframe. All of the iframe urls resolve to the subdomain = blowingminds.spreadshirt.de. So, once shopping begins, a product is selected for further consideration, then you are redirected to the subdomain.

If the SEO he is speaking of is that of www.blowingminds.de, and if by I want the spreadshirt shop to be found under means that when someone searches on a search engine for it I want them to find blowingminds.de and not blowingminds.spreadshirt.de then, it is likely he is going to be disappointed.

While I agree that user experience is important, Spreadshirts appears to have developed an affilate model that utilizes an iFrame wherein they keep all the juice. They do not want blowingminds.de to become stronger than spreadshirts.de. They are fine with the subdomain gaining authority (this is my opinion).

So, it would appear what he is asking is (for practical purposes) not doable. He can either use the subdomain provided by spreadshirts:  .blowingminds.spreadshirts.de or redirect to that from an Iframe which is provided.

Really great to see a response from someone who went through and graduated. And with a DMA, I am impressed.

I completely disagree that writing skills are the mostimportant for SEOs. This is probably an oversimplification of where EGOL was going and my followup. I am hiring an SEO now who is not an English major (Journalism Summa Cum Laude) and got her SEO training on the job where she was hired as a blogger/writer to work with the marketing firm they were using.

What EGOL said, was: "great content can defeat SEO over time and crappy KW research is a waste of good SEO.." So, the content is king. Not English majors are kings.

There are gaps in the SEO/SEM she has, but she does write well and understand what SEO is and the basics and more. She will be a superstar in a year most likely. Yes, technical SEO is very important for her to learn.

My issue with the Full Sail candidate was that he really did not know anything about SEO and (he may not have gone there at all) when I asked about how long the curriculum was he said 6 months. (Maybe including his internship.) I do have copywriters who knkow more about SEO in two months than he knew.

I am curious as to why you think someone who was taught SEO would leave? I don't see it that way at all, but I also do as much as I can to insure they are constantly learning and to insure their pay is ahead of others at other firms. Plus, they get to work with me!

Last, I can't imagine outsourcing my SEO/SEM. That's why I built my firm, to do those things

While I do not think your response is without merit and I do sometimes consider the issue of which is easier to remember, I am not sure it is as relevant as it was when Rand made that post in 2007. As we see so many sites today with hyphens, I think more people are used to them. But, that does not mean it won't happen.

I think, once someone has seen it visually it is not an issue. If I am doing radio it is. With a non visual medium, you are forced to spell it out and say something like (remember to put in a hyphen between Rons and kickass and Site.net!) That is not a great option.

With most of our sites, people are clicking the link organically for our eCommerce where there are return customers, we are leaving cookies and bookmark options.

As to spending money to get the site you want, it is relative depending on the client. If a client is new (I have a small client who came from a relative that is two ladies who do baby sitting and pet sitting and we are building a 5 to 6 page site for) to business and has a low budget, getting the dream domain is sometimes not possible. Yes, for Fortune 500 they will likely blow a bunch for insuring a branding option.

But, again, it is two sides to a very interesting coin.

When you say referrers are showing as direct, what are you meaning by that? 
If I type in your domain and enter, I will show as direct.

If I go to site A (say YP.com) and click a link to your site it will show as a referral from YP.com.

The way you are saying this, if you are getting 1000 visits in a fixed period it shows as 500 organic, 450 direct and 50 referred. You believe the 450 direct are actually more like 50 direct and 400 referred, is that correct?
