Managing Multiple Websites via Add-On Domain
-
Hey SEOMOZ community,
I've always been curious about whether or not hosting multiple websites through an 'add-on' domain has positive/negative effects on SEO for websites.
Currently, I'm hosting 5 sites through an add-on domain at Hostgator.com. Is this a poor way to set-up my sites or is this OK?
-
Hi JP,
Addon domains are OK as long as you play by the rules (do not interlink them, user unique content).
Think about them as sites being on the same dedicated server. Do not do things you would not do to sites on the same server and you will be OK.
-
I would say if they are all independent of one another, and NOT like the scenario Mango Man described than you should be fine. You should only face problems when you're links are primarily coming from one host or ip or web server.
-
Honestly, I think it depends.
Are your 5 sites linking to each other? With the same anchor text? Do they have duplicate content? If that's the case, then it's likely not OK.
In my case, I have 60 add on domains, interlinked, with the same anchor text and duplicated content. I also have a killer penguin on my trail

How to switch brand domain and address previous use of domain
We recently acquired a new domain to replace existing as it better fits our brand. We have little/no organic value on existing domain so switching is not an issue. However the newly acquired domain was previously used in a different industry and has inbound links with significant spam scores. How can we let Google know that these links are not valid for our business and start rebuilding reputation of the domain? Disavow tool?

International Domains for SEO
My company is international and we have websites for each country with Country Code Top Level Domains (ccTLD). I am in the US and I am seeing that other countries such as Costa Rica and Germany are ranking above us in search results. I thought Google automatically geo-targeted users by default and therefore I should only get .com or US results. Any idea why other countries would rank above our site?

Merging Domains
Up until last week, we had separate domains for each of our 3 products. We've now merged two products to sit under one URL. The merge coincided with a CMS upgrade which effectively killed all of our old URLs save for the homepage. Is it best for me to 301 the old homepage to it's new place, as well as the rest of the old site's top pages to according pages on the new site? Or is there a better solution?

New website from scratch and redirects or maintaining domain?
Hi friends, I have to face a big challenge. My client has an online store with about 250 products. The store is based on a web service provider whose CMS gives critical duplicate content issues. My client is considering to rethink the store from scratch and choose a CMS that offers more guarantees. I have two options: Starting the store from scratch with new domain and make redirects (whole domain or page to page?) Maintaining the domain, careful to keep the current structure of the URL, which is currently pretty bad I hope you could help me. Thanks in advance.

Changing domain extension to detoxify a domain
Hi there, A linkbuilding company that has been building links for us has not gained any sustained results. They have advised that our domain may be toxic, and that we should consider permanent redirecting from .co.uk to another domain extension in order to remedy this. Is this a recommendation worth considering?
