My worst performing pages all have this /products/ URL structure...?
-
I rank first for my brand "example" on example.com
But my product pages simply don't rank. Frankly, I don't know where they rank, but it's not top 40. They are indexed, as searching "site:example.com" returns all my site's pages.
My product pages are outranked even by some of my shorter blog posts about the product.
My product pages are the only ones on the site that use a folder/directory in the url.
example.com**/products/**product-one is nowhere but this is the main product page.
example.com/short-blog-article-about-product-one.
Is the fact that the product pages are with the slashes a red herring and I should be looking for anther cause? Or is google saying, well these product pages are the only ones in these sort of path and therefore we'll treat them as secondary sources?
Thanks

Hi Milosz, thanks very much for your reply. I suspected the testimonial pages too. I have found a canonical meta field in my CMS, so I've added a canonical url in the header for all the testimonials for just one product to see how that works.
Hopefully the canonical meta data will be somewhat equivalent you the robots suggestion. I could look at the robots file if recommended.
For the testimonials to which I've added a canonical url (the product page), I have also taken those testimonials out of the sitemap.
I now wonder if I should meta noindex them too? What I don't want to do is stop google visiting the testimonial pages until they have crawled the new canonical meta tag, and I don't know how a noindex would affect that.

Hello,
Not sure if you figured it out but looking at your most recent ranking it seems you still have this issue. Your Title tags are just fine. Yes the H1 could be optimized but I've seen worse cases of H1s so this can't be it. What I did find out is that your product page has duplicate content shared with other pages therefore Google is picking the page with absolute unique copy as best option.
Check out where your testimonial's copy reside: https://www.google.com/search?q=%22Up+until+two+years+ago+I+was+a+gym+bunny+exercise+freak%2C+then+ill+health+meant+I+had+to+stop+exercising+on+a+regular+basis.+This+almost+drove+me+to+insanity.%22&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
I could be wrong but I don't think you were planning on having this page indexed:
http://www.reviber.co.uk/reviber%20plus%20success%20toning%20my%20legs%20and%20arms
You could fix this in a various ways, robots.txt/canonical but I would make sure google doesn't crawl your "testimonial" urls. .
Hope this helps,
Milosz

Edit.
-
Thanks, yes I know about the h1, those issues are also common to the much better performing pages.
-
Hmmm...one thing I notice is that you have the
tag say "Reviber Products" on each product page, rather than being the name of the product (for example:
Reviber Zen Physio
". That would be my first, easy fix to help boost the products.
Also, you may be stuffing your title tags a little much. The title for the Zen Physio page is 77 characters (Reviber Zen Physio | Percussion Hand Held Deep Tissue Body Massager | Reviber) You should try and keep it under 70.
-
-
That could not be your issue. I would look elsewhere. If you provide the actual URL we could take a look at it and see what could be done to improve rankings for the product pages.
-
I should add a few things:
-
Bing ranks these product pages at No1 for the respective products.
-
There is far more content in the product pages than in the blogs pages that outrank them.
-
-
Also, while URL structure can help, there are dozens of other things that can affect ranking. Does it use a CMS that renders the pages really slowly, but the homepage is solid HTML that pops up in no time? Do your product pages have useful/informative title tags and
tags? Is there good textual content on the pages that would pull in search results?
There are loads of other things to consider.
-
Well, looking at the scenario you have mentioned doesn't show anywhere that slashes are that cause of low search engine ranking. in-fact slashes doesn't even play any role in search engine position.
You need to strengthen your inner pages by acquiring some quality one way links (Do not purchase links), build link manually and gradually with the help of articles, PRs, guest posts, comments, blogging, etc.
You may want to PM me the url of your website to look into the real problem.

Products To Products links
Hi,
Image & Video Optimization | | Tormar
I want to create good internal linking structure, but I have a problem with product to product link. E.g. I have a new model of product: iPhone 6, and old iPhone 5, and I want to put link from iPhone 5 to iPhone 6, but if I make link like this, I dropped for a few positions. Also, if I have similar product e.g. photography Kit for iPhone 6, and I put a link from this additional product to iPhone 6, I will lose my position.
Why, do you have any recommendations?0 -

Local SEO Question: Domain Wide Vs Specific Page
Hey Moz Community, Question about Local SEO authority and how it applies to a domain vs. landing page. Let me elaborate... Company is launching a new local out reach sales channel and merging it with our inbound sales channel under one brand. The plan thus far is to create a targeted landing page for local customers/leads. I have been tasked with creating the written content and making sure we are optimized as much as possible for this landing page to show up for our city. Funny enough for a lot of relevant terms we are already in the top 10 with little optimization (Also due to low competition for most of these terms) Two questions: 1. Should the whole site be optimized for local - appropriate schema markup, G+ business local set up, contact page with correct address formatting, building citations/local links etc.? To accompany our targeted page? 2. Will taking a local first initiative hurt reaching our non-local target market? If so will a very targeted landing page for local customers do the trick minus rest of local optimizations ? I guess what the question really boils down to is will optimizing for local hurt our broader inbound search reach/ranks in the long run? I want to be sure we are competitive to our broader audience and local audience on the same site with trying to get into sub-domains or considering re branding what is essentially the same department but for local purposes. Responses and sharing previous experience would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Subfolder or Geo URLs?
Hi Guys, Context: I am working with a plumbing companies that have a corporate side and a franchise side. We got 2 franchises on board. The corporate is not working with us though. Some of these franchises don't even have a website. Because they are local plumbers(franchises) covering generally at least 2 cities, local SEO will be the primary tactic to pursue. So before getting into that, I have to purchase domain names that are already not taken(different from corporate), therefore slightly different from corporate name but not completely to keep the advantage of the brand name. My first problem: should I include a geo kw rich URL or not? To me I personally believe that creating a domain name without geo can be better in the sense that I will be able to create different subfolders for all the different locations that each franchises covers. Also, I am not sure also if google likes those geo urls? If you guys would recommend Geo kw rich urls, wouldn't be a good idea to get multiple domains that would link at each other for each of the locations they cover or would it be a bad idea? in long term SEO Who wins the battle? www.example.com/cityname www.examplecityname.com Thanks Mozzers!

Has Anyone Used CBS Local Pages?
CBS has a service that they offer to their advertisers called CBS Local Pages. Has anyone used this? It's about $1500 a month and basically they send "business data" to local listing platforms, this is similar to UBL and LocalEZE it seems. One of my associates subscribed to this and they're unsure of the value, they are paying $1500/mo for something that can be achieved with $125/year with localeze. Has anyone used this?

Can you get in trouble/get results by sub-dividing one physical address into suites for local search?
We have a client in our area that offers a multitude of home services -- plumbing, HVAC repair, landscaping, etc. -- out of one physical location. It makes it difficult for them to rank highly for all of their services in local search since many of the competitors that rank highly only offer one of the services that they do. They have come to me asking if they could create a Google place page for each service by making imaginary suites for their main address. So, for example, plumbing would be located at 100 Main Street, Suite A; and HVAC repair would be located at 100 Main St., Suite B; etc.? Seems like this is either a great idea or could get you into some Google trouble. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Thanks
