Localized SERP Rankings - Multiple Questions...
-
The Google SERPs for my keywords are pretty regional. We are in the "IT Support Company" space. I've checked with friends in other parts of the country, and we don't show up in the SERPs in other parts of the country for KWs that we are ranking for locally. Questions:
1. I see both national and local players showing up in the SERPs. Is there any kind of formula for how Google decides who gets on the first page?
2. Some of my keywords trigger Google+ listings. How long does it take to show up in Google+, assuming we're optimized appropriately, and we have earned a placement?
3. For Moz's keyword ranking tool, how does it handle regional searches? Moz's tool is going to show different KW rankings than what I will see. My immediate concerns are rankings in my area (NY Metro), but we want to go national. How do we track rankings in different areas?
4. Is it possible to be on the 1st page with Google+ and Organic listings?
5. Do the Google+ 7 packs have generally better, or worse CTRs than similarly placed organic listings?

Hi Rahul,
Our Rank tracker tool does not include Universal placement listings in the results, if you'd like to see your progress with your rankings regionally, you would have to start a campaign to obtain data associated with your efforts. For more information, please check out Moz.com/help/rankings.
Hope that helps!

Hi Rahul,
I'll do my best to provide some insight in the many areas about which you have questions.
- Yes - the formula by which Google evaluates web pages is called an algorithm. Google has separate formulae for organic results vs., say, purely local results. Each algorithm contains several hundred components.
2. I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark here and guess that you mean Google+ Local listings (if I'm wrong, please correct me any let me know you are talking about purely social Google+ pages rather than local-focused Google+ Local pages). It isn't possible to say it takes X amount of time to appear in Google+ Local for desired terms because the competition in each geography is completely unique. You must analyze your competitors and work to surpass their authority so that you can break into the local results and surpass the competition. This can be easy, hard or next-to-impossible depending upon how entrenched your competitors already are.
3. I will CC our help staff for a technical explanation of how our tools work.
4. If, again, you mean here Google+ Local listings rather than just Google+ listings, the answer is that it is possible, but rare. Since the Venice update in early 2012, very few companies have had a double Page 1 ranking (both an organic and a local listing). Where a company has managed to get a double listing, it is typically either because they have optimized a secondary page on their website well enough for it to rank organically alongside the Google+ Local listing, or because the business has little or no competition (like the only lawyer serving 3 small towns). However, an enormous shakeup has hit the Local SEO sphere this week with the introduction of the local 'carousel' for verticals like restaurants, hotels and entertainment-oriented companies. At this moment, everyone is assessing how this may have changed what is showing on page 1 of the results and one of the things worth investigating is how this may have affected the double ranking scenario.
5. Unfortunately, no one that I know of has published an expert level study on this topic. Part of the reason for this lack could be that the Google Places dashboard does not provide accurate analytics data. This is a very good question, but one for which I do not have an authoritative answer.
Hope this helps, and I've said, I'll ask our technical help team to look at your question #3.

Rahul,
I'm glad you are asking some really great questions. Each one is very complex and requires a thorough understanding of how SEO and google/bing/yahoo work. Which, I think, is beyond the scope of this forum or site.

Getting ranked nationally is very different then getting ranked locally. There are quite a few factors that come into play - the most important being TIME. The amount of time your site has existed as well as how much TIME you have put into growing your internet presence. This translates into links established naturally over time and that leads to a historical record of traffic over time. There are a few tricks up an SEO person's sleeve to get listed on page 1 locally the fastest, but you may not want to hear that answer. The answer is Google Maps. Make sure you are listed there first.

You may be confusing Google+ places and pages with Google rankings. Granted Google + pages can show up in the primary Google SERP, I don't think you can substitute the good work there for the good work done on your website. Your google+ work should SUPPLEMENT your webpage work.

Nobody really knows how the mysterious MOZ tool works. Use it as just another tool in your toolbox, not the ultimate source. Although we use it for our primary research and for finding needles in a haystack. We appreciate it for what it helps us accomplish.

yes. See #2 above. Actually three times, add in your Google maps too! However, if you are listed in other highly referral directories, they may overshadow your Google+ (ie: manta, mapquest, yellowpages). Don't simply rely on Google+ to be your end-all-to-be-all.
-
Huh? Not sure what that is. According to wikipedia Google Pack is no longer available for download. Not sure why you are referencing them.
All in all, you may want to check out some other reference items. This site proved very useful to me when I was first learning SEO: http://www.bruceclay.com/seo/search-engine-optimization.htm They authored "SEO for Dummies" and it's a great reference tool for beginners.
Good luck!

(Need helps here!) Can homepage and other internal pages (services) rank high together on Google?
Hi Moz community, Recently I am working on our website's SEO. Our company is a marketing agency. We provide general marketing services and also web design. Here is the content of our homepage and internal pages (specific services). Homepage (marketing agency) Internal page #1 (XXX marketing service) Internal page #2 (YYY marketing service) Internal page #3 (web design) I suggest to my supervisor that we could make some improvement and optimize different keywords for these 4 pages, respectively (homepage, internal page #1 #2 #3). However, my supervisor holds a different point of view that homepage and internal page#3 cannot rank both high for their own keywords because web design is not as related to marketing. So I did some research and look for some top-ranking marketing agency guys who also offer web design. I found their internal pages about web design service rank pretty bad for their own web-design-related keywords. Here are my thoughts and guess (please correct me if I am wrong): Google takes everything into account and deems web design to be kind of irrelevant content to the website, so the internal page for web design will not rank high. The internal page has so much lower power than the homepage so it got outranked by the guys whose homepages are all about web design and development. My question is: In above case, can homepage and other internal pages (our services) all rank high together for their own keywords? I know what I wrote is kind of confusing...But I really need help here and want to solve this problem badly. Really appreciate any help!! Thank you in advance! Best, Raymond

SERP rankings consistency
I have a website which is showing different serp rankings. On one computer, he's on the first page, on another, he's second page and another person from outside our office sees him ranked differently. What would account for the inconsistency in rankings?

Moz Rank Moz Trust and Authority higher than my competitor but still getting outranked
Hi There, I'm new to SeoMoz but ive been using it for the past month and I've been using the tools to try to optimize my site but for some reason even though my metrics are showing that my rank and authority are rising past my competitor they still rank higher in the searches. my website is the site on the far left with the domain authority @27. the competitor that keeps outranking me is the third from the left with a domain authority of 12. If anyone can advise as to why I'm being outranked that would be very helpful. I'm stumped here. Thanks guys! eYtMRr9.png

Ranking better with worse figures
Six months ago a competitor e-commerce site appeared in the top 10. Now six months later he is at #2. (for the main keyword in my sector in Dutch language, competition +4 million) My site is 4 years old and since three years ranks at #1 or 2. I'm now at #3, behind the competitors site. My competitor has a HomePage PA of 36 with 2295 links from 26 domains, root domain DA 23 with 175000 links from 30 domains. My site has a HomePage PA of 49 with 6975 links froms 238 domains, root domain DA 40 with 310023 links from 269 domains. I have more specific landing pages, better and more content, code W3C checked .... Can somebody explain why a younger site with worse figures gets a better position in Google ranking?

Question about Keywords & Ranking
I hope this isn't too basic of a question, but I am confused about something. If you use the Keyword Research tool and type in "Stained Concrete Flooring", the 3rd result (stainedconcrete.org) has the lowest numbers of any of the sites in the top 8-10... Is it because they have a large amount of traffic? or is there some other factor that I am missing?

How can my site not ranked on easy keyword while it currently ranked 1 on difficult keyword??
The site in question is http://ikt.co.id The site is perfectly optimized (or even over optimized) for keyword "Bikin Website Murah" (in Indonesia it means "develop an affordable website") currently if you search on both google.co.id AND google.com, it ranked on #10 (on google.co.id) and it ranked on #7 (on google.com), and both term only return 1.3 million results I have A LOT OF pages that started with 'bikin website' , or 'website murah' ... there are a lot of them, and i have had a lot of backlinks on those pages too (have been manually building a lot of links, starting from creating a tutorial article and blog submission and many other way) .. the site has been perfectly optimized for that keyword For example we have http://ikt.co.id/blog-category/bikin-website-murah-promo-terbaru.html (for newest promotion) http://ikt.co.id/blog/bikin-website-seo-murah-discount-40-sampai-31-juli-2011.html (for discount 40% promo that lasted untill 31 juli 2011) AND YET, if you search on google.co.id for keyword "2000 likes facebook" , our lone page that i created when our facebook likes reached that amount, RANKED #1!! , and please let me tell you this term return 400 million results++ (on google.com this keyword ranked #19, on 500 million results++). And let me tell you it take that SINGLE page (which has absolutely 0 backlinks) 2 days to ranked #1 .... and her brother if you searched "1000 likes facebook" also show similar result (though not better then the sister) How ?!? and Why ?!? , i dont understand this at all.... my domain does not contain any keyword, they uses the same engine and yet that lone pages which have absolutely no backlink ranked so well on a very competitive keyword, while my Target Keyword ranked poorly.... And what is even more bizzare? "Bikin website murah" might not rank good, but "bikin website" ranked better x_x ... arghh i dont get it... why my site ranked poorly on easy keywords and ranked high on difficult keywords :(( .... Why I am not smiling because those easy keyword is actually my primary keywords 😞

Competitor Ranking High has 2 Domains, But Duplicate Website ?
I was using OSE and noticed all the backlinks to one of our competitors is there other domain name, which is the EXACT SAME website. You can enter both url's and they display the same content. They are not useing any canonical tags either. Why are they not penalized for duplicate content? And for using there own website for backlinks ? We try to do everything right, but still cannot beat them. Any thoughts on this?
