Advice on Link Building?
-
I know webmasters shouldn't focus on link building but unfortunately there are some types of content that doesn't get shared as much as other. And for content to go viral, it ain't that easy and it's almost impossible in some smaller niches where you don't have the volume to go "viral".
That said I know about the common link building techniques. I know I can submit guest posts but when you're competing with websites that have over 10,000 backlinks, there is no way I'm going to get close to this with guest posting and commenting on other blogs.
One way I found for getting backlinks is to publish interviews. Most of the time, people/businesses you interview like to link to this type of content. Publishing value-added content about other businesses' products or services may get some backlinks in return but not that often.
So other than that, can some of you share some "out-of-the-box" link building strategies?
Thank you in advance!

Thank you Jesse. It is a great advise. You are right, i should start a company blog soon as possible.

Oh my.. Perfect! What you need to do is create a blog!
There's no reason you can't have a blog. I don't care if you sell kitty litter, toiletries, or butcher tools. Everything is blog-worthy. Become the source on why your product is useful. What new products just came out. Why your store is the best resource to get them from. And what exactly you can do with this product. Tie all of these together and you've got yourself a ton of link building opportunities.
And yes, host your infographic on your domain and spread them out to places like visual.ly and other infographic sites.
Why do you need the link pointed to your homepage? What difference does that make? The link juice passes to your domain no matter what directory/page/image internally it's pointed at. And the brand is then furthered. Drop your URL in the description or small at the very bottom of the infographic if you'd like and you might get some direct referrals.. But really as a link-building/SEO tactic the exact route of your linked content doesn't need to be all to your home page.
As EGOL said, Build an info site with a store! DO THAT!! You will succeed.
THIS is inbound marketing in 2013.

Hi Jess,
How does infographic work for an ecommerce website? We don't have a blog. If we create and distribute an infographic, links would be pointing to infographic url right? such as url.com/img.jpg. How do we get links to the home page instead of infographic image url?

Another idea is to reach out to the websites that you would like to get links from and ask what they're interested in seeing. An open ended question like, "What should I build?" probably won't yield great results, but if you have a couple of ideas and ask a site owner if they're interested, they'll a) let you know if that's a good idea before you even build it, b) probably add some information that will make your new content richer, and c) will already be engaged and more likely to link to your content once it's built.

Build an info site with a store.
-
- Infographics
- Video
- Memes
- Interesting/Engaging/Authentic Content!
If you have the content, the links will become easier to find. Yes it's a daunting task going up against the likes of what you're suggesting, but you'd be surprised. Sites with thousands of links like that don't always win on sheer numbers alone. In fact, sometimes those numbers hurt them. It all depends where those links are coming from of course... but I digress.
The interviews are a great idea, keep that up. Maybe you can publish a survey and offer a nifty prize, then at the end of the survey post your findings. Keep it relevant to your niche and people will be interested in your charts/graphs/stats. This could gain you a whole bevy of links.
At MozCon Wil Reynolds talked about creating one infographic that changed his life. It was shared all over the stinkin' place and picked up by all sorts of media. All it takes is a hit like this and you'll be off and running quicker than you realized was possible.
Good thread. This is what we are all striving to do.. (Or at least what we SHOULD all be striving to do. There are some who are still unsure what it means to be an SEO/inbound marketer in this day and age.)
You're on the right track, undoubtedly. Good luck to you/us!

Hitting a brick wall with link building!
I am working on a new home furnishing e-commerce site, and started a couple of link building campaigns. Specifically, I have started a scholarship campaign with outreach going to schools, and a broken link building/content outreach campaign. With both of these campaigns, I am targeting .edu domains first, and some high value blogs in that niche. I am hitting a brick wall with both! These are both the types of campaigns I have tried before, with some degree of success. It seems that the webmasters have been getting so inundated with spam that they simply ignore emails. Does anyone have recent successful experience with these link building methods? I would appreciate any advice on current link building methods if anyone is willing to share. TIA

Re: Inbound Links. Whether it's HTTP or HTTPS, does it still go towards the same inbound link count?
Re: Inbound Links. If another website links to my website, does it make a difference to my inbound link count if they use http or https? Basically, my site http://mysite.com redirects to https://mysite.com, so if another website uses the link http://mysite.com, will https://mysite.com still benefit from the inbound links count? I'm unsure if I should reach out to all my inbound links to tell them to use my https URL instead...which would be rather time consuming so just checking http and https counts all the same. Thanks.

Pop up question and link flow?
Does a pop up like the one on this site www stressfreeprint co uk (top left corner about us, who we are) count as an external link or would link juice not flow to it. I like to have a few pages that i don't want to waste link juice on but would still like to have them and hope this is the answer.

Questions About Link Detox
Greetings: In April of 2014 an SEO firm ran a link removal campaign (identified spammy links and uploaded a disavow). The overall campaign was ineffective and MOZ domain rank has fallen to 24 from about 30 in the last year and traffic is 20% lower. I purchased a basic package for Link Detox and ran a report today (see enclosed) to see if toxic links could be contributing to our mediocre rankings. As a novice I have a few questions for you regarding this the use of Link Detox: -We scored a domain wide detox risk of 1,723. The site has referring root domains with 7113 links to our site. 121 links were classified as high audit priority. 56 as medium audit priority. 221 links were previously disavowed and we uploaded a spreadsheet containing the names of the previously disavowed links. We had LinkDetox include an analysis of no-follow links as they recommend this. Is our score really bad? If we remove the questionable links should we see some benefit in ranking? -Some of the links we disavowed last year are still linking to our site. Is it worthwhile to include those links again in our new disavow file? -Prior to filing a disavow we will request that Webmaster remove offending links. LinkDetox offers a package called Superhero for $469.00 that automates the process. Does this package effectively help with the entire process of writing and tracking the removal requests? Do you know of any other good alternatives? -A feature called "Boost" is included in the LinkDetox Super Hero package. It is suppose to expedite Google's processing of the disavow file. I was told by the staff at Link Detox that with Boost Google will process the disavow within a week. Do you have any idea if this claim is valid??? It would be great if it were true. -We never experienced any manual penalty from Google. Will uploading a disavow help us under the circumstances? Thanks for your feedback, I really appreciate it!!! Links from new sites with no link juice
Hi Guys, Do backlinks from a bunch of new sites pass any value to our site? I've heard a lot from some "SEO experts" say that it is an effective link building strategy to build a bunch of new sites and link them to our main site. I highly doubt that... To me, a new site is a new site, which means it won't have any backlinks in the beginning (most likely), so a backlink from this site won't pass too much link juice. Right? In my humble opinion this is not a good strategy any more...if you build new sites for the sake of getting links. This is just wrong. But, if you do have some unique content and you want to share with others on that particular topic, then you can definitely create a blog and write content and start getting links. And over time, the domain authority will increase, then a backlink from this site will become more valuable? I am not a SEO expert myself, so I am eager to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

Does the number of links on a page metric include repeated links?
Just wondering if the number of links on the page metric includes links that are repeated? So, if I had 100 links to one page would this count as 100 or 1 link?

Advice on forum links
Hi guys, Looking for some good advice on forum links and there potential negative impact. I am analysing the links of a URL and around 60% of the links are coming from a forum (on a different domain). The forum is very relevant - about the same product he is selling and also has a decent user base. This 60% of links account for roughly 6,500 links. All with different varying keyword anchor text's, and some with excessive usage of a particular keyword anchor text. They are also all do-follow. They are in a mixture of signature links and in post links. The site they link to has been hit by penguin which also has an EMD. MY question is even though these links are relevant and on a good site with good traffic, do you think they have likely been picked up in the penguin algorithm? My initial thought was yes only because they are all do follow and mostly keyword based. But id love to hear thoughts on this as well as possible recovery options, i.e should he remove the forum links, reduce drastically or make them all no follow so traffic can still pass through? Thanks!

Removing Canonical Links
We implemented rel=canonical as we decided to paginate our pages. We then ran some testing and on the whole pagination did not work out so we removed all on-page pagination. Now, internally when I click for example a link for Widgets I get the /widgets.php but searching through Google I get to /widgets.php?page=all . There are not redirects in place at the moment. The '?page=all' page has been rated 'A' by the SEOmoz tool under On Page Optimization reports and performs much better than the exact same page without the '?page=all' (the score dips to a 'D' grade) so need to tread carefully so we don't lose the link value. Can anyone advise us on the best way forward? Thanks in advance.
