Is building a Link Network from scratch a good idea?

My SEO agency are suggesting that they will build a Link network from scratch by buying domains and building blog sites on them. All sites that link to my site would in theory be 'clean' and as we build up their authority we increase the value of the links to my site. One of the upsides is taht we would have complete control of all the links. This does sound a bit spammy but in theory could it work?

I wouldn't really recommend you ever build a link network, but there is plenty of precedent for successful content networks. (e.g., buzzfeed, gawker, etc, etc.)
If you're doing it for the links, then give it up already because it's going to be terrible content and you're not going to be able to "build authority" as much as you think. The result will probably be you'll have 6 junky blogs that all get de-indexed in the course of a few months.
If you're actually interested in putting good content on them and building useful websites (and let the links land where they may) then it might actually be fruitful.

John/Thomas are 100% correct. If it's not natural, it's spammy and Google is getting quite good at recognizing this. Even if it not recognized today, it will be in the near future. Small decisions today can lead to big trouble tomorrow. STAY AWAY!

I agree 100% with Chris do not under any circumstances build a link network. You are much better off not messing with Google's temper. Essentially if you were to do that even with the best intentions you would be waiting for it to be destroyed by Google rather it's immediately or if it is in the far future it will fail.
Do not do this under any circumstances I hope this is of some help,

Short answer no
In the short term it could work but in the long term you would be fighting google, it makes more sense to run a singular blog and increase authority on one blog (especially if its a niche) and if it goes really well you can set up more however creating multiple of the purpose of gaining links will end badly and make your site look spammy in the eyes of google. You need your site to have natural links for different sources if it has loads of blogs pointed to it it won't look so great.
Google is always tweaking its algorithm and has already shown a distaste for guest posting so think carefully about the longevity and effort it would require.
May want to rethink your strategy if you ask me.

Link Building - Where to start and how long to see results
Been working a lot on on-page seo and it mistifies me to observe that when i get A's constantly for search terms for on page but im not on the first 10 pages of Google compared to a competitor on page 1 with on page reports of C, D and even E! So, a lot of hard work "on page" does not equal to a lot of hard work which is obviously link building. my domain and page authority is only 18 and 27 whereas the main competitors are 50's and 60's. Ive been working through open site explorer and starting to get some of my competitors links. Adding NOFOLLOW to all external links, is this a good idea?
In the setting of a news site, with articles that often link to one or more outside sources, is it a good idea to rel="nofollow" all external links? Would this hurt link-building prospects? Of course, internal links would keep on passing link juice back and forth, but is there real harm in following external links? These would be links our writers and editors created themselves to reputable sources, blogs, etc.

Link building from keyword domains
Hi all, I am currently working on link building to our site http://www.betxpert.com which has a number of keywords I am targeting. I have become aware that domains with the keywords are available. We (in Danish) target the phrase "ekpert tips" and the domain www.eksperttips.dk is available. Would it be a good thing for us, to register this domain and do one of the following things: a) DNS forward traffic to our main site b) Build a small blog with minor content and linking to the main site with text links with the tekst "ekspert tips"? c) Simply do nothing, save the money and spend it otherwise... Ideas for structuring contest to get links?
Hi Mozzers, So I'm getting all set to run a contest. The prizes are great and I've developed a good way to promote it via paid and natural venues. I'm just not sure how to structure the actual contest so the end result is more links than mentions. One idea I had was to make this a story telling contest where the contestant blogs about a good/bad experience within the niche industry and adds a link back to us to enter. Does this seem like to much effort for the user? Prices are worth about $250 each, and I plan to have 3 winners. Any ideas on how to better gear this towards link building is appreciated. Thanks!

Some of them, are waiting for approval, from administrator, and some of them goes automatically published, but all have a good PR and PA&DA too. Link Building - Goals and Expectations
I'm trying to set concrete goals around link building and I'm wondering if anyone has any insight on what is reasonable to expect. If we are reaching out to 10 sites a day in a non-spammy, relevant way, is it reasonable to think that we'll get 5 links back, 2 links? I just don't know. Tips and tricks are welcome too!!
