      Hi guys,

Aside from Google certification, can anyone suggest a good training program for Adwords? I'm studying their materials, but more formal training, where I can be tested in my knowledge and improve in certain areas as necessary. I want something with videos with demonstrations.

Going from organic SEO to SEM and am frightened!

      Thanks,
      Sarah

Thank you EGOL. That's a common theme I hear - start small, trial and error. As for costs and expenses .... it remains to be seen. I'm on the ground level in terms of both the new products and digital advertising in general. Right now I'm doing preliminary research for the benefit of our budget next year, which is how I ended up tinkering around in there and realizing I'm going to need some deeper-level training.

One thing that come with the PLA ads, in my opinion, is an even high level of price competition.  So the same forces that make it difficult to succeed with Adwords are still in play.

            I have not tried remarketing/retargeting.

My approach at present it to compete in the organic SERPs as an MSRP seller.  I have great organic visibility (especially long tail), a lot of traffic and sell a few items that my competitors ignore.  My site also gives great service to the visitor through content and video - no competitor is even close to matching.   So, we are still making lots of sales at MSRP.  This yields good profits on every sale.

I am also running Adsense across the site.  I don't think that it damages sales very much and it produces income with zero work.  So, I am happy not to be doing PPC and actually glad that my competitors are staying busy making lots of sales at very low profit margins.

EGOL, What about PLA?  What about Remarketing/Retargeting?  Are you able to make money on either of those?

Buy the easy books and tinker around.   Be ready to lose money.  But if you keep at it and keep doing your  math and eventually you will get better.

But, bottom line... Can you compete with the big boys on costs and expenses?  You can be a small biz genius but if you don't have the numbers you are not going to make money.

100% honesty here.  I love math. I know my numbers.  I have done LOTS of adwords training and even more self study.   I get killed at Adwords for most products.  Why?  I am up against people who have a 20% merchandise cost advantage and a 15% shipping cost advantage.

I could have Mahalanobis doing my math and would still get killed.  Because my competitors have a huge advantage on costs and expenses.

His typical Adwords seminar is two days.  The first morning is about keywords and ads.  Everybody is watchin', sippin' coffee and smilin'.

Then the math starts after lunch.  I sit in the front and turn around..... quite a few of the people behind me are using their phones or are watching the screen with a "10,000 mile stare".

The second day... quite a few people are not there.... by the afternoon the math nerds are the only people left along with a few people with the 10,000 mile stare.

Now, I am not saying that he is a bad teacher.  He is fantastic. Fantastic.  He says there during every break, during lunch, back early after lunch, stays late to answer EVERY question.  The problem is everybody thinks that makin' money from Adwords is easy, you just write an ad and pay 5 cents a click.  Then they realize that they are up against genius people who have rock bottom costs who are really hungry.

Try viewing the Lynda tutorial on it (the site has great tutorials--but I have never viewed this one). Also, Perry Marshall has a great book on adwords. Adwords get's extremely complicated and expect to many mistakes. Do your best at minimize them as much as possible and watch the numbers DAILY! Good luck!

For example, if I purchased the latest "For Dummies" book, would it even be timely enough? I'm looking for something at that level to get started.

Are Brad's materials something a non-numbers person can pick up? Or is it going to be totally over their head? I'm willing to learn.

I was afraid of that.  I am definitely a writer and not a numbers person. Luckily I've been collaborating with an analyst, but I need to know this stuff on my own.

If you have not done so, consider reading. Advanced Google Adwords by Brad Geddes.   I have read it twice, and reread some parts of it many times.  Best book anywhere for adwords.

If you are spending major money on PPC then you must attend Brad's Adwords Seminars.  This is  two days of intense training for Adwords.  This is not a fluffy seminar.  The first morning covers the basics and then you get deep into spreadsheet math.

Adwords is not a word game, it is a math game.   This is not a seminar where you will sit, sip coffee, fart and go home an expert.  You are going to do lots of math that will require you to think VERY HARD.  But if you can learn what is being taught you will definitely make a lot more money and your competitors will be making a lot less.

Making money with Adwords is very difficult for me.  More difficult than SEO.  Why?  You are competing against the entire resources of your competitor.  They might have lower cost inventory, cheaper shipping, cheaper labor.   If they get 60% off MSRP and you get 40% off MSRP then they can spend that 20% on Adwords and still make the same profit that you do.  But if you bid enough to compete with them then you lost 20% off the top, then pay credit card fees, shipping from manufacturer to you, labor, shipping supplies.  You just made zero profit.

My suppliers are often the ones who bid against me on adwords.  Really really hard to beat them when they have huge cost and expense advantages.

Like I say, Adwords is a game for the people are really good at math, have highly skilled people making a website that converts customers like greased pigs, and are cut-throat competitors on costs and expenses.

You better know your numbers or you will lose your shirt.

Will pausing my AdWords PPC campaigns impact my organic rankings?

Over 95% of my revenue comes from organic search; less than 5% comes from AdWords PPC (all other sources account for about 1-2%). My ROI on AdWords is roughly zero. It's negative if you include opportunity costs. My question is: if I pause all of my AdWords campaigns, is there ANY chance that my organic rankings (and organic click-through rates) will suffer? This is really two questions. First, could Google retaliate to my reduced ad spending by dropping my rankings? Second, will searchers think differently about my organic link if they don't also see the accompanying paid link on the SERP?

What is the best way to update Adwords final URLs if I'm moving to a new CMS?

Hi there - One of my clients is redeveloping its website. That means, the domain is remaining the same, but the whole site is being rebuilt in wordpress so all the adwords final URLs need to change OR be redirected. There are 550 live adgroups and 3400 ads. We haven't set up tracking. I can't find anywhere what the best thing to do is in this case. The key issues seem to be: 1. 301 redirects - given we have to do these anyway as part of migration, this seems to be the easiest path as Google is ok about redirects as long as they don't go to a different domain. From what I'm hearing, you don't get adversely impacted in terms of quality score etc. This has the huge advantage that you don't have to edit the ad therefore no loss of statistical history or risk of downtime whilst you wait for approval. HOWEVER, there is some concern that if you then redirected again IN THE FUTURE, the redirect might not work (in some browsers) or cause a loop. I'm also concerned that it's messy to leave it like that (ie: with the wrong URLs throughout). 2. Buik updating ads - I don't think this is an option as if you bulk download and then reupload, Google will see this as a new ad, and delete all the statistical history - I'm also concerned that that WOULD impact quality score as you'd be starting from scratch! 3. Changing each ad individually - as far as I understand you'd have to create copies of all the ads (so that you keep the history of the old ones) and effectively create new ones with the correct URL - one by one. You end up with a messy account (a lot of paused ads) but you keep the history? This is obviously the most time consuming and I can't see a way of avoiding ads having to go in for approval again, given the urls are all different, so you'd have to do this a an ad level, not an adgroup/campaign level etc. People redevelop their websites (without changing domains) all the time. It seems strange that no one is mentioning this problem! Any ideas?! Many thanks

Google Analytics showing my Adwords campaign bounce rate at 0%

I am relatively new to Adwords, and I can't figure out why the Adwords section of Analytics is showing all my site visitors at 0% bounce rate.  Does that mean the account connection is not done right?  Obviously Google ads are not a 0% bounce rate. If I can't get that to work, does anyone know how Google ads appear in Traffic?  Is it Direct or Referral? I'm sure there's some simple answer I'm just not aware of, I would appreciate anyone's help. Thanks!

Does having redirects in a Adwords text ad destination URL hurt quality scores?

I recently noticed that one of my clients had several redirects in their Adwords text ad destination URLs.  I updated the destination URLS to land on the final location (thereby losing all the text ad history).  However I'm wondering if this could have any impact on the text ad quality scores (none of them were disapproved).

AdWords quality score of landing pages and subdomains popularity

Hello, I have an AdWords account whose landing pages point to (i.e.) http://www.domain.com/landing01.php I've  been using this account for ages, it has a good score and history, so I want to keep it. The first question is: may I use landing pages on different subdomains within the same AdWords account (and in the same root domain)? I.E. (http://cheese.domain.com/landing01.php and http://wine.domain.com/landing02.php) 2nd question: the www subdomain has good subdomain metrics (authority /trust and, generally, links) while the "cheese" subdomain has not (no backlinks at all). Do I get any benefit in Adwords (like quality score or other) if I publish my landing pages under a subdomain with better subdomain metrics (or number of links)? Or should I just go with http://cheese.domain.com even it has no authority at all? Thank you, DoMiSoL Rossini

OK to have a modal pop-up on an AdWords landing page?

We're about to launch an AdWords campaign targeting users who are searching for hand-crafted furniture. The website we're sending users to has a large inventory of furniture, and all if it is hand-crafted. But there currently is no page on the site specifically communicating that all the furniture on the site is hand-crafted. So, rather than dump the user right into browsing the inventory, we want to put an intermediate step in place to say, in essence, "Hey, welcome, yes, we have lots of handcrafted furniture. In fact, all of it is hand-crafted. Here, have a look around." The art director on the project is suggesting that a modal pop-up would be perfect for this scenario. It would greet the user, who could then dismiss the pop-up and move into the site. I have two concerns about using a modal, though: Does a modal violate Google's policy against pop-ups that open new windows? Assuming we trigger the modal using Javascript, will AdsBot have any trouble crawling the content of the modal, such that it could hurt the landing page component of our quality score?

Is there any reason to add the word "buy" to our Adwords keywords?

Was having a discussion with someone so I am going to write this up as neutral as possible and let you guys decide. We have a large keyword list and they are all setup as phrase. Should we go back and add the word buy in front of all those keywords? Even though they are setup as phrase already. Example: "Widget" (as a phrase) Should we go back and add "Buy Widget" as a keyword?

Adwords: Brand ads appear bottom of SERPs

Hello, I'm running a sale promotion on a brand only Adwords campaign (I have the only account with trademark authorization) and have noticed that my ads are appearing at the bottom of the first page on Google. This happened last week so I split the campaign into three Adgroups and that fixed the problem but today I'm running brand only and there is no way to separate them. CPC has also increased dramatically. Normally it's less than 10 cents and now it's sitting at between $2-$4. Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas/advice on how to stop this happening? It's playing havoc with my CTR and conversions. Much thanks,
                                  Davinia
