The Local SEO test is at https://moz.com/blog/local-search-expert-quiz-2016. I would use it as a jumping off point for making your own test (and randomizing the questions), rather than simply having potential candidates take the Moz one.

awesoem answer .. thanks for the feedback and tips! - I will 100% incorporate this basic question " what are you looking for from this role?" as we dont have it in our stock questions, and its important!
And we will go Mortal Combat as well!
Cheers!

The two round interview idea is great but in my personal opinion, it will work better for an agency. I have worked for years in different In-house companies and from the experience, I am telling you that success of in-house is depends upon multiple factors.
If you are hiring a single person to handle your complete SEO, than you are looking for a guy who can understand the ins and out of your business, can write about it, do competitor analysis, outreach, build links and build reports and present it to the CEO.
Unlike agency where they have a set culture relevant for SEO and digital marketing, In-house culture is more business orientated where the guy will be sitting around non-SEO people.
What I mean to say here is that when you search for in-house guy you should look for a person who know their game well plus they understand your business and have management skills unlike agency where all they need is a good writer and they give them on-the-job training.
Just a thought!

Hi Bryan,
No offence taken by any of us, I'm sure. It's an unfortunate fact that our industry has a number of... dodgy providers.
In any case, our process is quite similar to Danny in that we use a 2 stage interview process and a test.
Ours is broken into 2 parts. A very short phone interview to cover the boring old cliche questions like "why did you leave your last job?" and " what are you looking for from this role?" I'll also throw in a bit of a qualifying question that could raise some obvious red flags so I can filter out the ones that just aren't going to work out. This saves my time and, more importantly, saves their time and travel costs. If they're out of work, the last thing they need is to be travelling to an interview they just aren't right for.
For those that make it past this step, they're invited in for a face to face interview. This one is about getting to know who they are; no technical questions. This gives me a solid indication of whether or not they'll be a good cultural fit for our team (very important to us here!) and if this seems fine, they're asked to complete a 10-question test which should take about 5 - 10 minutes.
It asks basic questions that anyone with the experience required for the role will almost roll their eyes at because it's so easy - "what is the purpose of a page title and where is the average user likely to see it most?" - that type of thing.
All of this lets me know what sort of technical ability they have, how well they can communicate, what sort of person they are, what they're looking to achieve and whether or not they can articulate answers to basic questions under a bit of pressure.
Then, if we end up with 2 candidates who seem evenly matched in every way, we arrange a Mortal Kombat style fight to the death.
Seriously though, being ecommerce, if you do go this route make sure you include specific questions about SEO for ecommerce. They can fall under a few different rules as far as how they should be set out, how to deal with potential content duplication etc.

Hi Bryan,
I run my own agency that is growing quite fast and we need skilfull and knowledgable SEOs on board quite often. We post job offerings on our site, on social media such as LinkedIn, Ineed, local HR magazine, Craigslist. We asked them to provide is with links of recent work along with resume. Once they come to the interview and we feel good about them. We have second sets of interviews which is longer interview with a test, last time I used local SEO moz online test and it worked well, also no hard feelings from applicants.
Thanks for invitation to move to Florida, I guess link is missing with employment opportunity, so potential seos experts can apply.
Good luck Bryan

Redirects, SEO and More
Website errors remittent of Chernobyl. First of all, I ask a lot of questions of the community and I don't do a lot of answering. For that, I am sorry! I own a small SEO company and the majority of my clients are upstarts just like myself. We try to do the best we can on a very limited budget.

With that said, the client website in question, http://bestdefensega.com has been a struggle to rank in the metro atlanta lawyer market.
Here's the story. My client is a new solo attorney that practices criminal law and personal injury law. We launched bestdensega.com to focus on criminal defense and my client has also paid AVVO for a website as well. We recently decided to make a monster website that would have 50+ pages and be representative of all that he practices.
I recently put a temporary redirect on bestdefensega.com and pointed it to the avvo website while I was rebuilding the website. I did this using a plugin.
This morning I decided that I wanted to remove the redirect, so I deactivated and deleted the plugin. The redirect is still in effect. I suspect that this may be a cacheing scenario.
How do I undo a redirect?
Also, I noticed that the AVVO site has all of a sudden shot up to the top of the search results and bestdefnesega.com has dropped past the 3rd page for our keywords. Have I lost all of bestdefensega.com's link juice? Also, bestdefensega.com has a spam score of 7. Why? There are no shady links and everything I do is on the up and up. Also Open Site Explorer says that bestdefensega.com doesn't have any inbound links.
Google WebMaster Tools says that the site has of 500 inbound links.. Frustrated, Thanks0 -
Seo moz has only crawled 2 pages of my site. Ive been notified of a 403 error and need an answer as to why my pages are not being crawled?
SEO Moz has only crawled 2 pages of my clients site. I have noticed the following. A 403 error message screaming frog also cannot crawl the site but IIS can. Due to the lack of crawling ability, im getting no feed back on my on page optimization rankings or crawl diagnostics summary, so my competitive analysis and optimization is suffering Anybody have any idea as to what needs to be done to rectify this issue as access to the coding or cms platform is out of my hands. Thank you

Onsite SEO tools
i have been working on an SEO site and I wanted to add a website checker tool to my home page to help keep users on my site for longer and start interacting. Are there any available scripts for a website tester that I can place onto my home page? This way when a user lands on my website they can check their "score" and then they can read more about how we came up with this number or what they can do to help it etc..

Open Site Explorer - SEO - Company Back Links not visible?
Hi Guys, I am relatively new to the SEO community and have what is hopefully a pretty quick and simple question? I have recently outsourced some of my SEO campaigns to an Australian SEO group which were referred to me buy a friend, and i do not have the time to manage all sites SEO. On pitch the SEO company said they had in excess of 7000 domains, and they would implement a massive back linking strategy for me anywhere upwards of 200 links a month and all legit. Initially there were some basic header and title tag changes needed on the site, and I am now in month 4 of my campaign. Looking forward to using SEOMOZ service and specifically Open Site Explorer, I entered my URL but to my disappointment I could only see 4 links and two I was responsible for. I spoke to the SEO company who responded Open Site Explorer wasn't a good indication of back links and that a lot of their sites were not on the network because of the structure of their linking being only one way. I would appreciate a second opinion (external of this company) on this because of my short time learning and dabbling with SEO. On a side note thoroughly enjoying learning SEO and my journey as part of the SEOMOZ community. Appreciate any feedback or responses I get. Kind regards Bodie http://www.berkeleyriver.com.au

How do you prioritize your SEO efforts?
If you're an in-house marketing person, almost by definition, you're neither a specialist or expert in the variety of things one might do to improve SEO. We do a bunch of stuff in-house and hire people for other stuff that needs to be done and the work is never complete! What do you do, as the de facto in-house, on-staff "expert" for SEO? I'm purposely leaving this question fairly open-ended to solicit advise, ideas & direction to develop a framework and a guide for our efforts. Also, I'm not intentionally ruling out pro's...I'm open to your opinions too - but I will probably only hire you unless you have a full tool bag of skills that include the ability to write auto-responders, write & blog relevant content, set up and monitor page rank, do SEO, set up AdWords campaigns, etc. at a the nice price. And I'll only do that if I can't do/learn/achieve all of the above to a certain degree on my own. Although I'll probably never stop questioning processes, costs and everything else associated with hiring a pro...all of which will make me a pain-in-the-butt client you probably don't want. Thanks!

Seo Moz for Clients
One thing I recently pondered following the introduction of logos on reports bringing that level of personalisation for the customers is ... would it be somehow possible to take it a step further and have a login on your own personal site that could somehow enable clients to download and look at the information as and when they wanted. An almost mini sep moz for clients where customers login through your own site ?
