Subdomain with higher domain authority vs. ccTLD with lower domain authority
-
Our website is active in many countries and we are considering if it is worth it to switch from ccTLD to subdomains. The reason is that our company.com domain has a domain authority of 65 and some of the ccTLD's like company.fr and company.de etc have a domain authority of 30.
From what I have read, moving these to a subdomain structure like fr.company.com and de.company.com will give them all the same domain authority (of 65 vs 30) which is considerably higher.
1. Would a subdomain with domain authority 65 rank better than a ccTLD with authority 30 (considering all else is the same)?
2. When we 301 redirect all ccTLD's to the subdomains, will our domain authority increase (to more than 65) for company.com, given that it can benefit from all redirected links to our ccTLD's?
Thanks in advance!

Hey there -
What a great question! It's definitely a very involved one and not a decision to be taken lightly. In fact, I was just having a similar conversation with a group of people recently when one of them posed it as well.
First of all, let me make a few comments around Domain Authority and how you should be thinking about it. Domain Authority is a metric created by Moz that correlates to how likely a website is to rank. That said, it's still unclear how the search engines are treating subdomains as they can be on different servers, be completely different technologies, and targeted to different countries as you well know.
That said, I am always a fan of consolidating link equity. If you move from a ccTLD to a country-specific subdomain and do all of the permanent redirects correctly, two things will likely happen:
- You will consolidate link equity from many different domains to your one overall domain, which should help with rankings/traffic
- You can consolidate your brand, which may help with conversions.
That said, you need to do your customer research and see if they'll trust eg france.site.com as much as they trust site.fr. There are definitely ways to make country-specific subdomains work very well for SEO, but this migration should not be done solely for SEO reasons in my opinion.
Hope that helps.
John

Is it better to have micro-sites with good content or redirect domains?
I have a domain with a lot of content and it is an eCommerce site. I've just been told that we have another 12 domains that are inactive and do not redirect. I don't know what to do with them as they haven't been used for ages and do not direct or have any content (max of a DA or 4). Therefore which is better for SEO? To have really good content with perhaps a few regular blog posts on each of the 12 domains, or to redirect all of the domains to the one main domain? I would take 1 domain and put a lot of content on and optimise is.. spending a few weeks on one and then move onto another, all while posting on each blog on each domain. Thank you for any help! 🙂

What value do external broken links give to a domain?
I ask, as I've just used opensite explorer to look at external links a competitor has, and I've found the high value ones at the top of the list go to a page that no longer exists on their site. Are these stiill of value in the SERP's, or have they messed up by not putting a 301 redirect on them?

Higher Traffic Numbers?
Recently we have been getting higher organic traffic number than usual? Some of them are keywords that I have not been working on? How is this possible? When Google gives you a bump is it gradually? Most of them long tail words. If our backlink/content building is slowly beginning to work would this explain it? I did submit my site to BOTW and Yahoo, not sure if this could also be why we are getting a boost? Thank You

Redirecting a previously expired domain - any SEO benefits?
Is there any SEO benefits from registering a previously expired domain name that is still linked to form an authorative source and 301 redirecting it to another site on a similar subject? Obviously first benefit is giving users who are clicking on the link to be sent to a site on a similar subject that just to a dead link.

How important is the relevance of a link compared to its authority?
Would be interested on some perspectives on link relevancy versus page and domain authority in terms of importance for SERP. How important is the relevance of the site linking back compared to the page and domain authority of that site

Do subdomains (eg .blogspot.com) carry the same link juice as a .com or .co.uk?
Hi guys. Just wondered what people's thoughts were on the value of a link from a subdomain vs a .com or .co.uk - I have several clients operating within the UK crafts sector, and there are a huge number of blogspot blogs with decent PR etc. Given that anyone can start one of these for free (and therefore theoretically get themselves hundreds of bogus links), I wonder whether they carry the same value as an independent site. I'll look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts 🙂
