"keyword" - rank the home page or sub page domain.com/keyword?
-
One of my clients has a pretty decent website that ranks 1st place for most major keywords in their line of business.
EXCEPT one keyword that i've been struggling to get 1st position on Google (currently 2nd).
My problem is:
let's say "tennis shoes" as a keyword
the home page of course has several other shoes listed but I've seen that Google took my home page and made it 2nd position (on 1st page). Where the section domain.com/tennis-shoes is on 2nd page of Google.
My question is should i rel cannonical from the /tennis-shoes section to the home page so it focuses more on the specific keyword that i need to get the home 1st? Or should i leave the home page generic and focus more on /tennis-shoes to get that 1st position?
What do you Moz'ers Think?
-
Wouldn't the other pages get less value because the home page has a clear focus on a specific keyword?
Don't want the rest of the pages that are solid on 1st position to get affected because the home page doesn't relate as much to them.
-
I would do BOTH!

Hi ennovation
You say "other than building links" but it may be that is where you need to focus your efforts next. It sounds like the on-page stuff may already be done well and that your efforts so far have helped the product pages rank number 1 for their keywords. Perhaps the home page has multiple inbound links to it containing anchor text "tennis shoes" and that is why it is outperforming the product page?
As link related factors are belived to be such a large element of the algorithm it sounds like it would br prudent to spend time on this area next.
-
I'm thinking the same. The only problem is the rankings on page /tennis-shoes. The page is completely optimized so other than building links i don't know what to do. Wouldn't it be better to slightly optimize the home page so the home page is tennis shoes then the rest are related sections.
P.S. other pages ex: /golf-shoes rank 1st place so no need for targeting home page on those specific sub pages
-
I'd leave the homepage generic and focus on /tennis-shoes. You can't optimise your homepage for every keyword you want so splitting them up on their own dedicated page is your best option.

How can you rank nr 1 for high competitive keyword with low DA and only 1 backlink?
Hi! Was wondering if anyone can explain this a bit clearer...
Competitive Research | | AleksanderOlsen
Image attatched... How is it possible to rank on Google Norway for spot nr.1 (page in English language) and spot nr.2 (page in Norwegian language) , when all you competitors have higher PA, DA and a lot more backlinks and better on-page optimization according to MOZ? Is there something I´m misunderstanding?

Comparing 3 sites and their ranks
I am looking at 3 sites and what they have going for them and why they are ranking how they are. I would like to get some of your feedback on why certain sites are above other ones. One of these sites is a client of mine, I will not point out which one. The other 2 are just competitors. http://www.cornhole-game.org/cornhole-bags.html http://www.samscornholebags.com/ http://www.ajjcornhole.com/cornhole-bags.php I have compared them in OSE and they have PA of 39, 29, and 58 respectively. AJJ has a ton of links, many of which are spammy and irrelevant. It looks like a link package was bought at some point. The other two have a similar number of links but www.cornhole-game.org/cornhole-bags.html has more anchor text themed links. None of which seem to be overly optimized. http://www.samscornholebags.com/ seems to have a lot of company branded anchor text links compared to keyword links. http://www.ajjcornhole.com/cornhole-bags.php as I said obviously bought links and has a ton of stuffed keyword links on poor sites http://www.ajjcornhole.com/cornhole-bags.php has minimal social shares http://www.cornhole-game.org/cornhole-bags.html has about 30 shares http://www.samscornholebags.com/ has about 30 shares but a good number of likes and some other social signals. All 3 sites have an A grade using the on page grade tool here on this site. All 3 got dinged for keyword stuffing. http://www.samscornholebags.com/ ranks the highest with the least amount of links and PA http://www.ajjcornhole.com/cornhole-bags.php ranks next with a really poor link profile and the least amount of social activity http://www.cornhole-game.org/cornhole-bags.html ranks the lowest with anchor text links that are not spammed and some social activity So with all of this in mind, would anybody care to weigh in on why they think any of these sites are ranking where they are in comparison to one another.

Beating the Big Boys: help analyzing keywords in a very competitive space
Hi all! Long time Pro member first time question asker! We are in real estate in Barcleona and, although we create tons of content (daily blogs, free ebooks, videos) we have never properly optimized our root domain page for any keywords that might bring us specifically real estate related traffic from Google. Our website is www DOT SuiteLife DOT com. My question is about keyword analysis. We've had this sort of paralysis whereby we're nervous to start link building etc… for the wrong keywords. The problem we have is that most all keywords in our space are VERY competitive. So far the two tools we've used are: Google Keyword tool: About the top 20-40 keywords we'd like to go after are rated as HIGH competition. SEOmoz Keyword tool: Only the really too-obscure or long tailed keywords related to our business fall under a 50 rating. We were wondering if anyone could shed some light on how to further analyze keyword possibilities for our homepage when it seems like anything with any decent search traffic is super competitive. Please let me know if there's any important info that I've left out! Thank you SO much in advance for any advice/help. The SEOmoz community is so amazing! Rock on guys and gals! ~ Benny

Using Semantic Language to rank, how much stock do you put into this? (LSI)
In theory, analyzing the top results for a given phrase and comparing the common words and phrases would indicate what google considers relative language to the query. Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) was and still is a buzz phrase for some SEOs. But how much stock do you give to the idea that if you can determine the common language for top rankers and then duplicate that language and density of common words that your website will then rank for that query you desire? Has anyone here tested the theory of using semantic language from the results themselves to better rank?

Wondering why my site ranks well for one page and not another.
Customers mainly find our site from searching very specific part numbers on google. My site is launch3telecom.com. Take for example these two parts:
Competitive Research | | launch3
MT500A-81015 MR050-81045 Search only those parts in google - we rank 3rd for one of them and don't rank at all for another. Is there any way to check backlinks pointing to those pages? We even show up before big sites like ebay and such on one of them. Can anyone help me understand this?0 -
Whats the best way to see why your competitor is out ranking you?
I am trying to rank in the number on position for Part Time CFO. Currently we are in 2nd and 3rd. We have way more quality inbound links then the site in first position, more content etc. How would you go about investigating why they are ahead of us?
