8500+ seomoz errors and still rank one for high traffic keywords
-
I plugged a competitor into the campaign manager that is ranking #1 for many target keywords like "sprinkler parts" (18k broad, 720 exact) and "sprinklers"(550k broad, 4400 exact) and #2 for "sprinkler"(1mil broad, 8100 exact). This site has over 8500 errors on SEOmoz - I have spent a good deal of time fixing errors on all of our client websites and have gotten them down to 0 errors.
I am just wondering if I have been wasting my time and if the errors that SEOmoz reports on even make a difference. How can a site rank for such high traffic keywords when it has 4k duplicate content and 4k duplicate page title errors? The site has 75 linking root domains according to opensiteexplorer. any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

I'm curious to know your site and the competitor in question.
I, like you, feel like I've been running into walls and wondering how they got in the road.
check out this thread and let me know if you think it's relevant to your situation:

I think in some way or another - we all do!!

I would check to see if the reporting is accurate on the competitor site/URL. Run checks to see if their duplicate content is actually 'duplicate' or if the reporting tool is just fooling you or mis-reading the data. Always good to do manu al checks.
Do that by grabbing text from the site and placing it in " " for exact match phrase search. Do you see the actual URL, and a duplicate say (like Druapl www.mysite.com/node/12345) below it .. if so, then it's pretty much slam on that there is duplicated content affecting that site.
Just 1 thing you can do to help research it out.

Thanks Mike. It is close to exact match, but I have always heard that is a very small ranking factor. Also, the SEOmoz errors are all red and dup content. quote from dr. pete "Panda made duplicate content part of a broader quality equation – now, a duplicate content problem can impact your entire site...no longer an isolated problem" if there are 4k+ problems on one site that should matter right?
I guess I have just been running up to a lot of walls lately where sites are outranking other ones that don't seem like they should be. For example if you google "sprinklers" sprinklerwarehouse.com comes up first and orbitonline.com comes up as the second to last SERP on the first page
sprinkler warehouse - 538 external links and 71 linking root domains
orbitonline.com - 744 external links and 117 linking root domains
I always hear and read that links from other sites is one of the most(if not the most) important ranking factors. yet I constantly see sites outrank others that have less links. any thoughts on why this would be?

Confession... I have a lot of errors on my site.... Still manage to rank.

I think there's probably a lot more going on with your competitor than you can see with the SEOmoz error reports. You have to take into account several things about your competitor, like:
- the site's age
- the domain name (is it an exact match domain?)
- the ranking pages (are they subpages or the home page that's killing you in the SERPs?)
Some of the errors that get spit out of the SEOmoz tool are pretty negligible. For example, if you run a fairly well-developed blog on your site, chances are good you don't do a custom meta description for each post. You can if you want to, but most people just ignore it. This alone can spit out thousands of error messages. The same result will happen with duplicate content. My guess is if you look at those errors, the majority will include a URL with /blog in there somewhere.
It doesn't sound like you're in a very competitive niche based on your keyword numbers, so the top results will be able to rank well with all those mistakes.

I am confused/frustrated/surprised how bad my website is doing on google ranking
Hello, I am confused/frustrated/surprised how bad my website (flyhy.co) is doing on google ranking and I have no clue why even though I have been doing my homework regarding SEO. Just a bit of background, I have created a new website about 6 months ago for the paragliding community, the primary goal is to provide a platform for people to publish their ads (osclass), but also to provide some interesting reviews and tools to help paragliders chose their wing. We have been putting a lot of effort to provide a nice user experience and tio build the tools mentioned above. Our main channel to connect with the community is Facebook, and we have been quite active there. I have looked at many SEO articles and I made sure the website provides a good UX, the URLs are SEO friendly, good meta data, etc. Also have been using the google search console and analytics to monitor all of this. But here is the thing, all these does not seem to change anything in our ranking for important keywords such as "paraglider for sale", "paragliding equipment", etc. We seem to only rank (looking at Google’s keyword tool) for very specific wing model names that people have mentioned in their ads. I have ran out of ideas on how to improve our SEO !!!!!! I know the website is only 6 months old, but by now we should get some results. As an example, I will mention one our main website competitors: www.paraglidingequipment.org. OK the URL is pretty obvious and this website ranks in page #1 for "paragliding equipment" (but also for "paraglider for sale" and other paragliding related key phrases). OK there is the URL (paraglidingequipment.org), but I thought nowadays google bots are smarter than just that. The website is 1 year old (so not really much older than us, and was ranking high anyway even 6 months ago). The website looks like it was clearly made by one person and then quickly just left it running, so no content has been added (except for people putting their ads), there is almost no activity on the Facebook account. I have run some test such as "pagespeed insights" and we both rank the same. On "seositecheckup.com", we are clearly better with more 10 points. Is there anyone out there who can tell me what is going on? Have I missed a very important aspect of SEO? Is our website somehow compromising the robots crawling (although I can see about 80 pages have been already indexed in google search console)? I know content is king, but in paraglidingequipment.org the only content I see are ads, and we have ads and other interesting (ie reviews and tools) for paragliders. To conclude, I am basically completely clueless of what to do to rank at least on the first couple of pages of google for the key phrases above. I need help. Hichem. PS: in Moz bar our score is non existing (PA=1,DA=10), on paraglidingequipment.org (PA=23,DA=15). So it looks that essentially we are not apparent on the web! PSS: We have also tried to build some backlinks on few important paragliding community websites.

Abnormally high number of root domains linking to root domains
My client runs a very small business hiring out space in a single warehouse and rarely adds content to his incredibly badly optimised wordpress site. Can anyone make any wild guesses as to why my client has 2.9 million root domains linking to root domains? He also has a domain authority of 100. Strange when the number one competitor in warehouse space in this part of the world is Gumtree (equivalent of Craig's List) and that only has 9.25k root domains linking to root domains and site authority of 80. Is there any way of finding out where these links are coming from via Moz? Thanks

SEOMOZ EXCEL PLUGIN ARRAY FORMATTING
Morning All, I have followed along, and am trying to build my own " dashboard", SEOmoz API in Excel, to get the Domain Authority and MozRank for a bunch of URLs. I have a list of competitor sites / related competitors, and I want to pull in the moz url metrics so I can decide who to investigate further. I'm using this array SEOMOZ_URKMETRICS_toFit(A2,"Cols=128" and it keeps listing the results vertically. All the tutorials show this lovely link data in horzontal rows to the right of the url in question, but mine doesn't want to behave. PS. I do know the bit data is wrong, I'll fix that. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Determining why an established competitor's rankings have bombed - What's the best way to go about it?
I arrived at work this morning to find my weekly SEOmoz ranking report for a main competitor waiting in my inbox. 90% of the their rankings have tanked in the last day or so by an average of 3 pages - most down from page 1 or 2 where they had been sitting pretty for ages. I'm not in a state of (total) euphoria about this because a) you should be humble enough not to gloat at your enemy's demise, and b) I need to find out what they did wrong so that I don't make the same mistake, too. **What is your first suggested port of call to determine where my (vanquished) foe has gone wrong? How much can I find out? ** I do know one thing - with OSE I can see they've used dodgy blogging services but this, to my mind, would have been jumped upon by Google last year. No? Thanks guys

Questiton about new ranking factors
Hi, I am new to seomoz and i was very much impressed with the stuff here in seomoz. The tools here in seomoz are very helpful to me . And i was doing good with the help of seomoz. But due to recent google's algo panda 2.0 update. I was bit confused about new ranking factors that google has released. I can see here in seomoz also that page level link metrics has good importance than backlinks now. Earlier google algo gives main importance to backlinks now i can see in the list it went to bottom. Can you help in explaining these things, on which things i need to concentrate on and does backlinks really count now?? Many people stopped concentrating on backlinks now and are going for facebook likes and tweets. Here is the good example that i can see: www.hotfilesearch.com which is a flle search engine. He was one of the competitor for me . He ranked very good in a short span of time, all he did was he bought some really good paid links and within 6 moths he was on top. Now i can see he was dropping out every link he has. But though he was ranking pretty good on the web. I really in need of your suggestions to optimize my site. Awaiitng for your reply.. Regards Dheeraj
