Exact Match Domain Names
-
Basically without a doubt having a exact match domain name is a massive benefit.
If you targeted a keyword with 2 different sites one with an EMD and one without, I could quite easily expect the EMD to pop up page 1/2 and the non EMD site to be 10 pages deep.
I'm going to be honest, I hate how much weight is put on the EMD, Domain brokers are focused on purely finding these, buying them up and selling them way above there worth.
Google needs to realise this is a massive problem because I see sites with great content, great moz trust and rank being outranked by a EMD that sits on a squeeze page.
Question: If no link building was taking place on the EMD site, lets say it ranked page 2, position 4 but you was linking building on the NON EMD how long to get it up to the EMD site?

That's not my experience, and it's not what this data suggests:
2011 Search Engine Ranking Factors
Pages don't compete in isolation of any other factors...
-
I disagree.
-
There is no real benefit of having an exact match domain, because it is single web pages and not domain names who are competing for SERPs.
-
Cheers EGOL,
You have hit the nail on the head for the kind of response I was looking for.
I have seen some amazing results, when you combine a EMD with good content some of the results from it are unbelievable, especially when you appreciate how hard it is to rank without one and how much effort is needed SEO wise to rank without one.
It's the brokers that annoy me the most, a domain is meant to be brought to attach a website to - domain sites on IP, IP points at site.
If Google ever devalues EMD's brokers are going to be in the muck.
-
I own a few exact match domains for competitive keywords and will confirm that they are helpful in getting rankings. However, Google has turned back the importance of these domains and even before Google did that these domains were not invincible. I am getting my butt kicked in a few places.
I'm going to be honest, I hate how much weight is put on the EMD, Domain brokers are focused on purely finding these, buying them up and selling them way above there worth.
I used to feel this way then I paid a ransom to get one of these domains. (My wallet is still smoking.) But, for me, it was worth it. Not only did I get better rankings, my conversion rate went up (without changing the site) and these domains will get you more links, tweets, etc - in my opinion. You might not have the same results.
So, my suggestion would be to bite the bullet and buy one of these domains. It will cost you some money, you might need to deplete savings or take out a loan but then you will see their true value - which might be less than what you expect.
But at least then you will have one of these gems and see what you can do with it.
The bottom line... owning one of these domains for me is not all about the rankings. It is about owning a great virtual property that gives me enormous energy to work on the site. That will kick a lot more asses than the EMD.

I can relate to your problem!
I think that's a difficult question to answer as you don't know the relative strengths of the two domain/ranking pages or the competition and it's hard to determine just how much of an advantage the exact match domain is providing without looking at the context.
When you see an exact-match domain ranking somewhere in the middle of the SERPS you can at least take a look at the pages around it to asses just how strong you're going to need to be to out-rank the exact match domain.
If you find an unassailable exact-match domain ranking for your chosen keyword, then maybe look at other keywords although remember that you don't necessarily have to out rank that page to get more traffic. If your can craft a more compelling snippet (title + description) then maybe you can draw more than your expected share of the traffic.

There is actually a patent that tackles this exact issue. Over 2012, in my opinion there are going to be more "Panda style" updates that target this method that filters out domains that are exact match, but really just a "loophole" doorway page.
Of course these are not really "doorway pages" by technical definition, but the underlying motive is to game the Algorithm into ranking a single entity for many keywords using multiple domains just junking up the web, in my opinion.
w00t!

Why is my domain authority so low?
Hello, a couple of years ago I started publishing on my site more than 10 posts a day of content that no one else had. For this reason, my competitors started paraphrasing my content without giving proper attribution, and they ranked better in Google. That's why I realized that apart from creating content I had to work on my SEO, so I started to get some backlinks, most of them via contests on blogs. I am getting about 1 high quality link from PR2, PR3 or PR4 blogs each week. According to Open Site Explorer, I have 20 root domain links (200 total links). In reality I have more backlinks but they don't show up (they do show up in Ahrefs, about 50 root domains). To my surprise, I only have 15 Domain Authority. This is the most evident example, take a look at this screenshot: http://imgur.com/dFk2rkx My website is on the far left, two of my competitors on the right. As you can see I win every category except total links and the most important, domain authority. Are total links that important for Domain authority, even if 99% are internal? By the way, I also have more posts than these guys, I don't know why the report says otherwise. Why is the site on the right ranking so high? The same thing happens with the rest of my competitors, they have a lot of low quality links from "lists of domain sites" and in general a lot of very spammy links. According to what I have been reading, my good quality links should be more helpful than my competitors' spammy links, which should in fact affect them. So what is going on? I have no idea if I'm doing things right. Why is my domain authority so low? Thanks for your help. dFk2rkx

Using a temp redirect or a link to another domain.
Helloooooooo (hey, we're in SEO...surely we need some sound effects as told in dramatic word elongation?) //First - background. I work on a site that does pretty well with search visibility naturally (by 'naturally', I mean it didn't need a lot of optimisation due to the relationships it has with its link network). I work on a site that sells a particular product - green widgets will do - as part of its verticals. Traffic to this section is great, and tends to convert rather well. These green widgets, however, are also part of another site that's part of the client I work for. The larger company was interested to understand what would happen to their conversions if these green widget visits were sent to them instead of staying on-site (namely, that's because they turn a bigger profit over there). So they set up a link on the page on my site to a landing page on theirs. Sure enough, conversions stayed the same on their site, and showed there may be value in keeping that flow active. //Second - question. I see a few options which mainly revolve around not changing anything, but the bigger part of company wants to see that change. My question is this: long term, should I keep the green widgets section of my site there, and use a link that goes to green widgets on the other site, or should I 302 it until they decide on what they want to do with the relationship between the sites? I know...a bit convoluted, but I'd love to get some ideas on what others have experienced in these situations, and what kinds of outcomes can help both sites remain strong. Thanks a ton, guys.

Better to redirect domain or to link from home page?
Hi, I have a niche directory and sometimes clients remove themselves because they have discontinued their business practice. If they sometimes provide me with their own website (as they will no longer use it either), is it wiser for me to: a) directly point their URL 301 to my own directory b) keep their website as is, and add a url link to my directory in their homepage c) keep their website as is, and add an anchored link with the industry keyword to my directory Thanks! Linking Root Domain does not show twitter
I wonder what it takes to capture twitter as a backlink. We have a twitter account @idyllicsoftware which never occurs in open site explorer. Also it never shows newer back links. Could you suggest how to use it better?

Links per Site vs. Domain Authority
Here's a quaint one: 1. Posting follow links on another site helps increase one's domain authority. 2. If I post to the same site/forum with followed links each week, would my domain authority reap a domain authority increase benefit? In short, is there any domain authority benefit to continually post links to a site to which I've already posted a follow link?

Is there a way to optimize our other domains for our primary domain?
Hi guys, At the moment we have our main website that is at .com We have also bought all the other domains that are available, such as: org.uk, .jp, .it, .mobi, co.nz, co.za, com.au, .cn and .eu Is there a way we can make these domains work for us a bit more? Currently they all just redirect to .com. Would it be better to put a holding page with a link to us and then a redirect on?
