I did great keyword research but now what!?
-
I did some REALLY good keyword research for my specific industry and yes, it was VERY helpful and educational.
Now what...............
-
My site title has the keyword I want to rank for the MOST (highest amount of traffic) and my business name in it
-
Meta description also mentions it (I have read this doesnt matter for seo and also read its starting to matter again)
-
My main keyword is in the text of my site several times very well written and spread out.
-
Also in the meta keywords tag and in some of the anchor tags and alt tags.
My question is - What about the other - 6-8 keywords that arent #1 in traffic but still get a LOT.......How do I optimize for those as well besides mention them in the site content. Is that really the best place?
I don't want to water down my ability to for my #1 keyword I identified but I dont want to miss out on others.............Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance for your time and suggestions!
This is a GREAT group of people - Im anxious for when I can help others like I have received!

Hi EGOL, great job... you have completed a very important step! Try the following process to move forward (I know this is an old post, but it may help if you have missed any steps).
- Prioritize a portion of your keywords based on high search volume, high relevance to your product/service, and low competition (pick out the best words from your list).
- Create Keyword groups from your priority list (you want to go after 10-15 keywords per landing page. This can be done through effective keyword grouping).
- Create a landing page / content strategy to accomodate your keyword groups.
- Build the pages (or modify existing pages) accordingly, ensuring that you take in to account all of the onsite optimization techniques (H!/H2 structure, URL structure, interlinking, content relevance, keyword frequency, etc).
- Once you have the pages up, perform some research to determine the best places to get inbound links (I use Open Site Explorer on competitor sites to see where they get links, to start, and PageRank (google chrome plugin) to find a nice list of viable inbound link opportunities.
- Work with the inbound link opportunities and use a SERP tracker to monitor your progress, making modifications to the landing pages or link building campaigns as you go.
- Don't forget conversion optimization! Test those landing pages out and make sure they are converting for you, if not then try things out like clearer messaging/calls to action, trust factors, etc.
Hope this helps!

EXCELLENT RESOURCES! thank you for the links!!!

I work in SEO for almost 5 years and just don't understand how is it possible to create one page for every single keyword.
Some people are focused on the short tail. That's good!

I work in SEO for almost 5 years and just don't understand how is it possible to create one page for every single keyword.
It is possible if you have a blog though
If you are converting visitors into buyers, and working really hard on optimizing your landing pages, analyzing traffic/keywords and so on.. you will not have enough resources to deal with huge amount of keywords.
If you are on top what you do, you can aim for 1 high volume keyword and several low volume for 1 page. It is not about how many keywords you can find, it's about which converting keywords you can find.
Keyword in title and several times on the page it is NOT the only way to rank a page. Links play a big role too, build you link anchor list )
-
OK... you have some keywords picked out. Go to Google and search for them and decide if you can compete with the people who currently own that turf.
If your competitor is the two other plumbers who fix sinks in Bugtussle, WV and they don't even have a website then you have a fightin' chance....
...but if your competitors are New York City real estate agents then you really have to decide if you have the resources to compete. Resources include content, skills, domain, design, links, access to properties, ability to sell or get listings, its a pretty long and steep list.
I'd like to cheer everybody on here and tell them to go out and kicksomebigass... but reality check is something that should always be done. I don't want to cheer you into bankruptcy.
How does it look out there?

I definitely second what Peter says.
Create a page for each of your target keywords and then use something like this link finding tool to some quality link building for each of those pages/ target keywords
I'd recommend going a bit further, and running an advanced keyword difficulty report for each of your keywords, and the use the metrics as goals to beat when you do your linkbuilding.
Of course, you can get much, much more advanced with your linkbuilding, I'd recommend reading John Cooper's blog (and subscribing to his newsletter) if you want to start really moving the needle.
-
You can write a seperate page for each keyword, or if there is not too much competition in your niche and your keywords are related, you might be able to create two or three high quality articles that include your other keywords in.

Sudden Rankings Drop for Good Keywords.. Did I Do This? Please Help :(
Hello, I noticed a gradual rankings drop for 3 important keywords over the last month, with a pretty big plummet the last two weeks. Overall in the last month+ we dropped from position 9 to 41.I noticed this when I dug further after noticing traffic dropping since February (not a drastic traffic drop). I should note that the keywords took people to my client's homepage. Their branded keywords have no suffered and I looked at a couple others that haven't either. Now, there is a link in the site footer (we have site wide header and footer) that takes you to a static page that contains links for the 2 digital flipbook catalogs the customer has (one for US and one for Canada). My concern is that at the end of January I had a developer implement a noindex/nofollow meta robot & robots.txt disallow specifically on the HTML pages/URL of the Canadian catalog ONLY. It specifically pointed to that flipbook URL. This catalog is nearly identical to the US catalog and I thought I'd be eliminating duplicate content and helping with crawl budget. After looking further into it last week (reading up about internal nofollows not necessarily being detrimental, but not recommended) and noticing the drop in search visibility traffic (starting gradually in March), I had the disallow/nofollow removed. This was last week, and over this last week the traffic took an even bigger drop (not amazingly drastic but enough to be concerned) and I noticed the keywords that we did ok for dropped even more this last week (down to 41). I'm concerned this has to do with the change I made at the end of January and reversed back. I should note that I don't think these catalogs or the static page that links to them brought any traffic. The keywords I am concerned about fell on our homepage (where the link to the static page that contains the links to both catalogs is in the sitewide footer) The catalogs are a couple hundred pages. I honestly don't see how this could do it, unless it has something to do with the footer being sitewide? There have been site upgrades/dev changes over the last couple months too (although I am not sure if that affected other clients who received the same upgrade), so this is hard to pinpoint. Sorry this is so long but I'd appreciate someone offering some insight to help ease my mind a bit!

Sudden inexplicable drop in important keywords
I have been running around in small circles trying to work out why, after a year of careful SEO my companies site has suddenly dropped for all it's main keywords out of the first page to the second or third in our weekly report. One theory was that five backlinks with a spam rating of 10 might have had an impact - these have been removed, but I have been advised that these may not have been the cause. Our crawl diagnostics remain squeaky clean. I add one, carefully checked and optimized (as per Moz recommendations) blog posts once a week and nothing has been changed other than that. We have slowly and carefully built up a good backlink profile, but as well as the drop in rankings our weekly report also showed that we lost 109 backlinks from the previous week. I have not been able to find out what I could possibly have done wrong! I've checked all our crawl reports and webmaster tools and nothing has been flagged up. I did discover, whilst typing in some longtail keyword phrases that our preview site URLs as well as our live site URLs appeared in SERPs. I checked with our web agency who assured me that this was fine, but that they had put a redirect on these yesterday. I thought this was a bit strange as that seems odd as we have been live for a year. I guess my question is could the fact that these redirects have not been active (until yesterday) have any bearing on what has happened or is this completely unrelated? Thanks Catherine - very stressed Mozer 😞

Keyword Rankings: One keyword dropped, dragging other rankings down. Possible or not?
Hey moz fans, So these week I noticed significant drop in rankings... But what caught my attention is that one specific keyword dropped 18 positions, and all the other just 1-3. Print screen: http://prntscr.com/7fb4g4 Do you think it's possible that the drop of that page, that went 18 positions down, brought the whole domain down? Or is it another cause?

How to combine 2 pages (same domain) that rank for same keyword?
Hi Mozzers, A quick question. In the last few months I have noticed that for a number of keywords I am having 2 different pages on my domain show up in the SERP. Always right next to each other (for example, position #7 and #8 or #3 and #4). So in the SERP it looks something like: www.mycompetition1.com www.mycompetition2.com www.mywebsite.com/page1.html
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | rayvensoft
4) www.mywebsite.com**/page2.html**
5) www.mycompetition3.com Now, I actually need both pages since the content on both pages is different - but on the same topic. Both pages have links to them, but page1.html always tends to have more. So, what is the best practice to tell Google that I only want 1 page to rank? Of course, the idea is that by combining the SEO Juice of both pages, I can push my way up to position 2 or 1. Does anybody have any experience in this? Any advice is much appreciated.0 -
Two Webstites Targeting the Same Keywords
If I aquire a website in the same industry targeting the same keywords. Should I merge them into one? I understand it's a bad idea to have multiple websites promoting the same thing, but i'd like to capture the customer base of a competing website. What's everyone's thoughts? A- Merge new to main website with 301's? will google like that? B- Keep them separate? Will google like that? C- Don't bother. D- Toss the computer and get into Horticulture

Create different pages with keyword variations VS. Add keyword variations in 1 page
For searches involving keywords like "lessons", "courses", "classes" I see frequently pages in the top rankings which do not contain the search term in the title tag, despite these terms being quite competitive. It seems that when searching for "classes", google detects that pages about "courses" may be just as relevant. What do you recommend? option 1: creating 10 pages optimized on 10 different keyword variations, each with a significant part of unique content or option 2: one page and dropping throughout the page 10 keyword variations in body and headlines Given that keywords are all synonyms and website has already high domain authority in the niche. thanks

Ranking For Misspelling of Primary Keyword
I have been baffled for the past few months for ranking for the misspelling of our primary keyword BELIZE in the Google U.S. Serps. We are nowhere to be found, but are ranking for the misspelling BELIZ (without the final "e"). We have been online since 1995 on page one everywhere. 11 months ago we did a site redesign changing over to WP as a CMS. We changed all pages from widget-example.html to widget-example and properly 301ed all pages after deleting the old pages. Then we accidentally de-indexed the site for a month due to a robots.txt error. This has been corrected 4 months now. We shared this on the Google Webmaster forums and some kind folks helped with advice - nothing major in our opinion but we implemented most of the tips given. We are doing fine everywhere with all search engines and Google itself in other areas Google.ca Google.bz Google.mx for example. But in our primary market is the U.S. where the majority of our readers are - tourists and retirees looking for our information - we do not exist. The joke is that searching for BELIZ in the U.S. Google Serps has us on Page One. It is a joke that is NOT funny - or maybe some human evaluator made a mistake or is playing a sick joke? We have done a reconsideration request in case there was a manual penalty and we received the no manual penalty form letter. I notice increasingly in Google Live Analytics people typing in our full domain name - I guess out of frustration not getting the site when inputting the primary keyword. I find that I can write a new article and in a couple of weeks it ranks in the top couple pages. Many other pages are found via long-tail only. I find it intriguing that yesterday I wrote a very small article, a press release actually, and today searching for the misspelling BELIZ in the U.S. Google Serp the root domain is ranked #2 and the snippet and image displayed is from this little article which is nothing really great. I am new here. Thanks to anyone who can help. The site: Belize http://www.belize.com
