Which is better for linkbuilding - Internal or external blog?
-
Well, here's one for the linkbuilding experts.
I'm having a discussion with a client regarding a linkbuilding campaign utilizing a blog. Which is better:
A. Setting up a blog on a subdomain (blog.website.com) and anchortextlinking to main domain (website.com/page)?
or
B. Setting up a blog on an external domain (external-blog.com) and anchortextlinking to client domain (website.com/page)?
I've had success earlier with a blog on a subdomain (solution A), but everyone in the internets-sphere says external links is better....
Well, which is it?
-
Just throwing this angle out there ... it depends on a few factors.
Let's say you've got a blog for a local business that really has little momentum. The fact that they are getting any links that is from an external IP address (given that is the case) may be better than if they hosted that same content at domain.com/blog.
To me though, if it is done right, and the blog is getting traction, visits, shares, retweets, and links, you would prefer those are associated with your main domain, i.e. domain.com/blog
I'm not a fan of the subdomain option, assuming it shares the IP of your main domain. That is kind of the worst of both worlds.

for clarity, here is another vote for:
-
Heh...
No, it's my clients site.
That's why the subdomain solution is the best, cause then I'll control the blog 100% and the client can do whatever they like on their main site....You've "twisted" (unintentionally I pressume) my initial question ;o)
-
I urge you to reread the replies of Jeffrey, Marcus and Tom.
I have placed all of my blogs in mysite.com/blog/
I have also redirected subdomains into folders and the results have been kickass.
Still, its your site and you can do as you please.
-
I agree. If this was my site I would place it in a folder. My blogs are in folders.

Hi guys.
Thanks for the awesomely fast replies...
I'll go with my initial instincs - subdomain blog (blog.website.com).
-
I would also recommend a third option ie. www.companysite.com/blog (this way backlinks will be strengthening your domain's authority) Use it to communicate with your customers, publish good content to attract external links.
-
If I'm understanding correctly, you're trying to site up a blog for a company and to derive SEO benefit from that blog by sending links back to the main site?
First off, if you're trying to acquire links to your site, I wouldn't recommend either strategy. A company blog is typically used to write great content and have other sites link back to your content.
If you're using either of your strategies (A or B), there might not be much value for a link back to your own website depending on how the websites are hosted from the same server (see here: http://www.seomoz.org/q/do-sites-on-the-same-c-block-and-same-server-count-as-seperate-linking-root-domains-when-linking-to-each-other)
I would recommend this: set up a blog at either blog.website.com or website.com/blog and post content on their. It can link back to your website.com/pages. No, these don't count as external links, but there is still the potential for SEO benefit.
If your write great content, you can earn links from external sites, which is potentially more valuable and seems to be what you are looking for.

That is a question with no answer, it's like saying, which is the better hair style, which is the better film, which is the best Beatles album, it simply does not have a definite or simple answer.
The best blog is the one you make a lot of effort with and make valuable to the intended readers. If the only purpose of the blog is to throw up some quickfire content to build links, then neither will do any great good.
In fact, I would suggest a third option, the best blog is the one on the main domain, the one that enriches the site, allows you to link to your products / services where applicable and to hopefully generate a readership and some external links into the main domain.
If you want a quick fix to build some text links, the subdomain or external options are both relevant, but don't expect them to sky rocket you to the top of the rankings unless you make the content valuable and if you are going to do that, then put the blog on the site itself.
Probably not the answer you were looking for so... sorry!
Marcus

How To Increase Blog DA to 50+
Hey, I am wondering to know the key metrics which MOZ considers before giving a blog of DA 50+. I have tried to search but couldn't find the best answers so was wondering how it's achieved. For example a site named "SportsALA" have a DA of 20 but i see they have links from many sites. I have checked other sites as well for example and they have less RDs but still had higher DA. Can anyone help me to explain Moz DA 2.0 factors a bit more. Thanks

I am trying to create a weekly link building task list for my team. We are 3 people. Does any one have any suggestion? For example: 1 - Write x blog posts. 2 - Comment on x relevant sites. 3 - Outreach x people. 4 - Publish x guest post. 5 - Produce and Distribute x info graphic. Does any one have any suggestions? what else should I add to the list? How many of each?

Should I remove links from my internal blog?
I have blogs/news sites on every one of my clients' websites (each representing a different business within the same industry - self storage). On each of these blog sites, I have a writer who places about 3-5 exact keyword match links (varying anchor text) to give interlink juice to the other off-site businesses owned by the client. Each of these blogs receive about five posts per week. I am sure this is mega-over-optimizing and a stupid thing to do considering penguin. So, my questions are: Moving forward - 1. Should i stop adding so many blog articles to each site? 2. How many interlinking anchor texts should I use per blog? 3. Should I go back and either get rid of all those interlinks on past blogs or just trash the blog articles altogether? Please help if you can - I very much appreciate the responses best bd

How do you use a blog to help SEO.
Hi, So you launch a blog on your website, fill it with lots of great content and update weekly with more great content. From what I know your looking to gain 2 things! 1. Users linking back to your blog and 2. Sharing the content on social networks. Building up social lists on Twitter, Facebook, Google+ etc so when you do post something new you have a hub of users to help push your post by sharing it on social networks which should also help to generate more backlinks. Is this the main purpose of a blog for SEO? Would anything else apart from the above effect the SEO for the site? Maybe the freshness of content also has a positive impact! Also if your blog is picking up lots of links, for this example lets say 100 links a month and the rest of the site outside of the blog is picking up 10 a month will the blogs power of picking up links effect the rest of the sites rankings, would you need to anchor text link out of the posts in the blog to make the most out of it? Cheers

Is using a tool such as My Blog Guest worth it?
I saw the post http://www.seomoz.org/blog/4-valuable-link-building-services and saw that MyBlogGuest seems like a good link building service, so I signed up. It really is confusing though, it almost makes me think I have to install WP Blogs on my sites which primarily run in Joomla, so linking directly to the blog is not an option. Okay, fine, so I'll just skip the part about putting in offers on other people's posts. I really signed up for the link building part of it anyways. So, now, I just write content in the site-used article generator? Then, go in and offer it manually to people? Doesn't really strike me as some super powerful method of linkbuilding, but there's a good chance I'm missing something. If this is the case, I'd assume I'd have to write content that is relevant to the site that I am trying to build links for, and then place links back to that site, so basically I want my posts on competitors sites and that will help out with backlinks and authority? It's really confusing. I just want to have my content writer write good content and get links from it, and this method just confuses me. I'd appreciate any insight from anyone who has used that service or can recommend something easier or better.

External links--Does it matter which page they go to?
I'll be doing some linkbuilding in which I will be asking manufacturers of the products we sell to link back to our site. My thought was to have a single page for our "Valued Suppliers" with a badge that I would give them the embed code for. If the URL goes to a "Valued Supplier" page on our site where there are multiple manufacturers, will this help my entire site or only the page that's being linked to? Thanks in advance!

External link
Hi guys! You must get many questions about external links... This is mine. If I get an external link with good authority ranking in google, but it is not relevant to the site (for example, my site is about marquees, but we could get links from schools, which are our main clients, or any type of client) Does that affect negatively somehow to the rankings? or there is good value on it even is not related? Thanks! Adriana
