Ideas needed for onsite SEO
-
Hi,
What sort of activity 'onsite' should I be doing to increase SEO?
I was thinking of a FAQ's section with 1 anchor text link in the body of the answer going back to my target page.
Will the increase in content along with the anchor text inside of it help increase SERP's?
I was also thinking maybe use the keyword tool to find search queries which revolve around questions with high search so for example 'How to change a tyre' answering this question in my FAQ's section and running PPC to it, then wrapping lots of sharing tools around it in the hope it generates some social signals.
Anyone got any hidden onsite gems they think might help?
Cheers

To keep things on topic I will respond in the other Q&A to that question.

Very useful and yeah I can see that.
One thing you got me looking at indirectly is your Author exposure in the SERP for google+.
I've asked a question here, which you might be able to answer - http://www.seomoz.org/q/smashing-magazine-seo-article-today-question-about-a-few-things-in-it
Either way thanks for the insight, makes things a little clearer.

What im looking for is ideas really on thing I can do after the basics which can help, like the idea I had.
There are an infinite number of ideas which can work. It's not only the idea but in the way it is implemented and supported that make the difference. That is why something which does not work at all on Site A may work amazingly well on site B.
As an example, someone reads "adding a blog to your site will help you rank better and receive more traffic". Accordingly, they add a blog to their site and a month later they see no benefits. The site owner then believes it was bad advice. Next, the site owner asks why he is not receiving the benefits from his blog and then he is informed he needs to add content to the blog. So he adds content in the form of 500 word blurbs about various topics and still does not receive a benefit. At this point he gives up.
Going back to your question "I was also thinking of capturing user feedback and adding this also to the website where relevant, but does this kind of activity help SERP's?" If you write high quality content on current topics which are relevant to users, then yes accepting any form of user feedback such as comments is exceptionally helpful.
I know it helps CRO so it's a good idea anyway but from a purely ranking factor does it have positive effects?
Absolutely! Go to Google.com and search for the following keyword without the quotes: "Ryan's response about removing spammy links for a client". If you notice the first result is a link to a blog article I wrote. The keyword text is not found anywhere in the article. It comes from the first comment Keri made. This example is just a fast one I grabbed but hopefully you get the idea. Your users may offer helpful comments which can generate new traffic that you otherwise would not rank for. Additionally, the comments can further support your article. Both have ranking and traffic benefits.

Thanks Ryan, always a good response.
All the things you mentioned I do as the basics, alt tags, canonical domain, w3 validate, css sprites, trying to keep load time to a minimum etc.

One thing you did mention which interests me is site architecture, a lot of positive stuff on silo structures and the impact on SERP's but I have never done it so I just don't know.
Any feedback on your experiences with Silos? Doesn't look to user friendly in my opinion.
Cheers

In my opinion the first and most impactful change a site owner can make to improve SEO is to fully examine their website architecture. There are a lot of poorly developed sites out there. Try to incorporate all HTML and SEO best practices in your website. A few examples:
-
Do users log in to your site for any reason such as make a purchase or leave comments? Embrace social logins. A service such as Janrain is fantastic! It allows users to register and log in with a simple click of their mouse rather then the clumsy process of choosing a user name, password, entering e-mail, etc.
-
Automate internal linking in a similar manner to Wikipedia
-
Review the code of your site. Use http://validator.w3.org/. A site does not necessarily have to be perfect, but if you do have errors in your code, there should be very few and an experienced developer should be thoroughly aware of each one and be able to state with confidence the error will not impact web crawlers, nor your site's presentation in various browsers or devices
-
make sure all your images use ALT tags and are named appropriately
There are literally dozens if not hundreds of other suggestions along these lines, but the above should get you started.

Need Expert Footer Link Advice
We have a sister company that provides online administrative services to .EDUs. The administrative site has thousands of pages, with good pagerank, excellent trust, and a clean bill of health from Google, as does our corporate site. We have the ability to put footer links on every page back to our corporate website. Options: 1. Do nothing for fear of getting penalized by Google 2. Footer Link: Web Design by Logo, with "Web Design" being the anchor text. 3. Footer Link: Web Design by XYZ with "Web Design" and "XYZ" being the anchor text for link diversity. 4. Footer Link: Web Design by Logo with "Web Design" and the Logo (Alt Text "XYZ Corp") being anchors for link diversity. 5. Put up a page (or 2) about web design on the administrative site, have all of the footers link to that page, and have that page link back to our corporate site. We really aren't doing anything wrong here, but both sites have a clean bill of health and the Google spam police have me paranoid. Our corporate site has an excellent link profile with hundreds of links from .gov, .us, and .edu. The links have commercial value, and can drive traffic to our site. Looking for your thoughts before we make a move.

What are Best Practices for Ault Site SEO
Has anyone here had experience doing SEO for an Adult DVD website? A company has approached me and they obviously only want White Hat practices. I have used open site explorer to do research on some competitors. The top competitors of this company seem to have only a few high PR links from High Authority industry sites and almost all have a link from the Yahoo Directory. Does anyone know where or how to create high authority content links from this niche? It seems that most of the competitor links are on sub par pages and are single links in the side nav of other sites. I am not sure if I can post a link to the company here but any suggestions on link building for adult sites would be great. Please remember they are a retailer and don't have pop up advertising or any illegal content. Thanks,

Can anyone provide any useful insights on how they use latest news items to help with SEO?
Hello, I have heard about SEO's and PR types riding off the back of latest news items that can be tied to the products or services they are trying to promote. Recently I read about how an SEO had distastefully written an article using the name of a famous singer who had sadly passed away and used this event as an opportunity to write about a small business models 😞 Can anyone provide any useful AND ethical insights on how they use latest news items to help with SEO?

Is buying blog reviews a good idea?
Hi there, I was wondering if it's worth investing on buying blog reviews for me site, by using sites like buyblogreviews.com? I've been making sure the blog sites are relevant and has good rankings, and not too many outgoing links. I also make sure they write about something interesting related to my site, that should get people's attention and gain more traffic. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Utilizing Print Media for SEO
Hey SEO MOZ, We have a client that holds the license to a famous Australian designer. The Designer and our client both get mentioned a lot in the print world. They get coverage in publications like the New York Times, Home and Garden Magazine and other top print media publications. Sometimes it's our clients business name mentioned and sometimes it's the designer's name who they hold the rights too. I'm wondering how we can utilize this exposure for their SEO? It already drives traffic to their website but it also be great to harness this exposure to increase their rankings. I know one way is to see if the article is also printed online and see if you can get a link on their. But I'm wondering if there are other ways to use this? Also do you have experience contacting major publications to see if they can put a link in an online published article and if they ever respond to these requests? Really appreciate this!

Social Bookmarking as part of an SEO strategy?
Hi all, I was wondering on my commute to work this morning the effectiveness of Social Bookmarking as part of a SEO campaign. The sites I work on generally have the social bookmarking widgets and they do get used by website visitors. In addition to this we also bookmark our sites, new articles and other new content within the top 5 social bookmarking sites. This is all done as part of a wider social strategy. But could I be spending my time better else where? Whats everyones thoughts on Social Bookmarking and do you incorporate it in your SEO campaigns? Cheers Aran UPDATE: I note that SEOmoz Q&A only have Tweet, Like and Stumble...

Is it a bad idea to build unique sites to build credibility for your main site?
It is hard to sum up the question in one line, but basically my company has bought several descriptive domains that we would like to build out into microsites that link back to our main site. For example...say we are a florist. Our main site talks about all the different kinds of flowers we have and the work we do. So the idea is to buy weddingflowersdallas.com (example only...) and have a mini site that has the same look and feel as our main site, but has unique content that talks solely about our wedding flower business and has a few links back to our main site. 1. Is this a no no from a google perspective? 2. Is this a good strategy in general? Thanks, David
