Redirecting a Page from Domain A to Domain B
-
We have a page on Domain A, an established and well-ranking website, that would be more appropriate on Domain B, a site that we launched about two years ago.
This page ranks well, pulls nice search traffic and has traffic from external links.
We would like to move the page and its traffic from Domain A to Domain B using a 301 redirect.
Have you ever done this or have you heard of how it has worked for someone else?
Thanks!

Thank you John! I'll remember to edit the links.

Awesome! Thank you Cyrus.

I didn't know that it would drop over time. Thanks!

Yep. I figured this, but will accept it.

Yep. Will do this!

Hi Egol,
Let me add my 2 cents. In my experience this sort of thing works, but there are quite a few things that can go wrong. Some general thoughts:
1. The 301 redirect will only pass about 80% of the pre-existing link juice, and drop over time.
2. If the new domain has a lower domain authority or vastly different backlink profile, this can hurt the new page's ability to rank.
3. Works best to keep the title tag and other html elements as close to the original as possible, including page layout.
I've found it also helps to build new links to the redirected page as soon as possible. Really, I don't like to redirect pages if I can help it, and usually do so only out of necessity.

Do any pages on Domain A link to this page? Is it going to be off-putting or strange for users to get whisked off to Domain B when they follow these links? If so, is this a place where a cross-domain canonical might make more sense?
If you go the redirect route, do make sure to update all your internal links from Domain A to go directly to the page on Domain B as to not bleed any link juice by going through the redirect, and to help mitigate the surprise of changing domains (some people look at link destinations before clicking links).

Thank you, Streamline. Should be really easy here because we have .html pages.

Thank you, Chenzo.!

I would just add the 301 redirect directly on the page. If you are using PHP, this should work -
header("HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently"); header("Location: http://www.domainb.com/page.php"); ?>

Not a fun process - but I have done migrations like this in the past.
From what platform to the next is it?
Example: PHP to wordpress or wordpress to wordpress kind of move?
- I had did a php to .html (wordpress platform) - using canonical link methods as well - and the migration/indexing went flawless.
Would like to see if I can help ;o)
Your pal
Chenzo

When serving a 410 for page gone, should I serve an error page?
I'm removing a bunch of old & rubbish pages and was going to serve 410 to tell google they're gone (my understanding is it'll get them out of the index a bit quicker than a 404). I should still serve an error page though, right? Similar to a 404. That doesn't muddy the "gone" message that I'm giving Google? There's no need to 410 and die?

Flip-Flopping domains - 301 redirect question
We have a client who has had the following domain setup for some time: longdomain.com 301 -> shortdomain.com Now, they would like to go back to the original longdomain.com, and will have the following setup: shortdomain.com 301 -> longdomain.com Obviously, I'm concerned about redirect loops cached in the browser. I plan to have the 301's from longdomain.com changed over to 302's for two weeks ahead of the change, so that hopefully when the change happens, browsers and search engines are more ready to respond. I also plan to establish rel=canonical on the longdomain.com pages after the switch. Is there anything else you'd recommend to help with the changeover? Should we plan for an intermediary period were both domains are serving the content, so that the redirects can be purged, before being re-established the other direction? Thanks in advance.

Duplicate content - how to diagnose duplicate content from another domain before publishing pages?
Hi, 🙂 My company is having new distributor contract, and we are starting to sell products on our own webshop. Bio-technology is an industry in question and over 1.000 products. Writing product description from scratch would take many hours. The plan is to re-write it. With permission from our contractors we will import their 'product description' on our webshop. But, I am concerned being penalies from Google for duplicate content. If we re-write it we should be fine i guess. But, how can we be sure? Is there any good tool for comparing only text (because i don't want to publish the pages to compare URLs)? What else should we be aware off beside checking 'product description' for duplicate content? Duplicate content is big issue for all of us, i hope this answers will be helpful for many of us. Keep it hard work and thank you very much for your answers, Cheers, Dusan

On Page vs Off Page - Which Has a Greater Effect on Rankings?
Hi Mozzers, My site will be migrating to a new domain soon, and I am not sure how to spend my time. Should I be optimizing our content for keywords, improving internal linking, and writing new content - or should I be doing link building for our current domain (or the new one)? Is there a certain ratio that determines rankings which can help me prioritize these to-dos?, such as 70:30 in favor of link-building? Thanks for any help you can offer!

No equivalent page to re-direct to for highly trafficked pages, what should we do?
We have several old pages on our site that we want to get rid of, but we don't want to 404 them since they have decent traffic numbers. Would it be fine to set up a 301 re-direct from all of these pages to our home page? I know the best option is to find an equivalent page to re-direct to, but there isn't a great equivalent.

Redirect Chains - Accept the 301 chain or link from the original page??
Hi everyone, I have a client that re-launched his site and it's gone from 100 pages to 1000 (new languages/increased product pages etc) We've used 301's to map the old site to the new database driven site. BUT the new site is creating extremely long URL's: e.g. www.example.com/example_example_example/example_example_example_example Obviously I want to change these URL's: THE PROBLEM..... I am worried about the Chain Redirects. I know two 301 redirects is okay (although it's not great), but I wonder if there is an alternative: When I've implemented the new URL structure the chain will look like this: www.oldsite.com 301 redirects to www.newsitewithdodgyurls.com which then 301 redirects to www.mynewsitewithgreaturls.com Seeing as the new site has only been live for a month, and hasn't really gained many external links, should I: 301 from the original site (www.oldsite.com) straight to the new site (www.mynewsitewithgreaturls.com)? If so, what would I do with the pages that I have not redirected? Let them 404? OR Leave the 301 chain in place? Your advice, and any other suggestions would be much appreciated Thanks
