Google Panda and Penguin "Recovery"
-
We're working with a client who had been hit by Google Panda (duplicate content, copyright infringement) and Google Penguin (poor backlinks).
While this has taken a lot of time, effort and patience to eradicate these issues, it's still been more than 6 months without any improvement.
Have you experienced longer recovery periods?
I've seen sites perform every black hat technique under the sun and still nearly 2 years later..no recovery! In addition many companies I've spoken to advised their clients to begin right from the very beginning with a new domain, site etc.
-
Thank you to you all for your valued feedback. Marie, please do let me know when this article becomes available. I'd be vary interested to read.
We use Moz to analyse and correct the general health of a website to eradicate errors accordingly.
Panda - I'm aware Panda updates have happened more frequently. All duplicates and the quality of content has been implemented for our client.
Penguin - I have disavowed "all" poor quality backlinks, ensuring good quality links remain. We did this manually checking each link and the referring websites for quality assurance.
**But how do we know when the Panda penalty has been lifted, when it's obvious we have a Penguin penalty in place? **
**Does a business who are desperate to advertise online simply begin creating new "valuable" **content, reach out to industry influencers etc, to achieve backlinks with authority - meaning waiting maybe months before the penalty is removed, if removed?
Or, create a new site, "completely" separate from the old, and implement our marketing strategy knowing that the spammy practices conducted in the past will not affect my clients new site?
-
If you disavowed six months ago then you still haven't seen a Penguin refresh as the last one was October 4, 2013. So, if you have done the work required to escape Penguin, you may see an improvement once Google finally refreshes Penguin. No one knows when the refresh will happen but hopefully it will be soon!
I actually have an article coming out on Search Engine Watch this week that lists 5 reasons why people don't see recovery on Penguin hit sites. To summarize:
1. Not a thorough enough disavow
2. Errors in your disavow file
3. Still waiting for a refresh (probably the case for you).
4. Not enough good links there to support the site naturally.
5. Other issues such as Panda or technical issues.

"My client is reluctant to spend money on developing links with relevance and authority until we see some evidence that the penalty has been removed."
Part of bringing a site any traffic after being penalized is developing a white hat strategy to get visitors via authoritative relative links pointing at your site.
It is like a fighter who has been knocked out. They are down and all the sudden everything changed they no longer are able to stay in contention.
Would you tell some guy who just got knocked out by Mike Tyson get back in there and fight them once he was pushed to his feet?
No you got to train and get yourself feeling better in order to get back to the same level you are at before if you can do that.
If the knockout was too hard you may have to swap out your current expectations with new ones.
How valuable is this domain to the client?
If it is not brought up to snuff there is no need to worry about whether or not will work because no one's will even try it.
Even with a new domain your client is starting at a disadvantage just because of who they are whois and numerous other methods will tell Google to a very small or very large extent exactly who they are.
Maybe they 301 redirect and it is the same deal for new domain
Maybe they start fresh realizing that without putting amazing content out there for end-users that they are just in it sit and complain it is not even worth thinking about unless they are going to do it.
You need to explain to your client that your site is equivalent to worse then a new domain right now most likely or depending on your circumstances possibly better I do not know.
But put yourself in either place you start a site with a new domain would you do?
You get penalized by Google for what occurred you have to really step it up top quality all the way.
You have to show Google that not only are you very trustworthy now and you are essentially sorry that you did what you did but that you are actually a site that is worth something to them and to end users. With the fact that you have had this penalty on your domain means your going to have to work even harder to make up for everything you lost.
If you did a link disavowal I think you took the right measures obviously you had no choice right?
The client has to start looking at search from a different perspective not one that states you can do a couple cool things that might get you a higher ranking but one that looks at their end users and how they can actually serve the visitors to that site the best they possibly can.
That is a pretty tall order and the web is huge so there is outstanding content, including video, text photograph, infotographs I could go on your client not only needs to have a top tier website.
They need very fast load times
An easy to navigate beautiful site.
Links that are being generated by users that like what they see.
Just those three things are not inexpensive in any way.
You want to start get into technical seo it only gets more time-consuming and a lot more expensive.
I do not know the circumstances of their penalty however a new domain might be something that will get your client to actually work on the things that they need to do to make the site a quality website.
I hope that helps,
Thomas

The disavow tool has of course been used. Some links still appear in webmaster tools. We've also asked the webmaster of each site to kindly remove the links, which some have been kind enough and removed.
I know once a link has been "disavowed" Google adds an invisible nofollow tag to the link. Similar to your no-followed links in WMT.
My client is reluctant to spend money on developing links with relevance and authority until we see some evidence that the penalty has been removed.
It seems we've exhausted all avenues by cleaning up the website. Plus disavowing links should also be used with caution!
Having seen no recovery for such a long time - my question is, will the site every recover if it has seriously abused Google's guidelines in the past?
-
If your trying to promote a brand it's hard to start from the beginning. Im wmt I'm sure you know about "links to your site" tab, go in there and see who is linking to you, if it looks spammy, disavow or email them to take the link off.
-
you can create quality links not quantity and create new fresh content , use Google disavow tool.
-
Have you just gotten rid of all the duplicate content, poor backlinks, etc? Or have you done that and also added quality content and obtained quality links?

Trying to escape from Google algorithm ranking drop
in 2010 our website was ranking number 1 for many keywords. we suddenly saw a crash in this a few years ago. we have since identified we have been hit by many shades of Panda and penguin updates. Mainly due to low quality back-links and poor content (some duplicates). since then we have done a major overhaul of our backlink profile. We have saved rankings that went from number 1 for many keywords to number 60 -70. We are now placed at around 11 to 18 rankings. We have also looked at our duplicate content issues, and removed all duplicate content, introduced a blog for fresh bi daily updates in an attempt to gain traffic. We also amalgamated many small low quality pages to larger higher quality content pages. we are now mobile friendly with a dynamic site, and our site speed is good (around 80). we have switched to https, and also upgraded our website for better conversions. we have looked at the technical issues of the site and don't have many major issues, although we do have 404's coming up in the google webmaster tools for old pages we removed due to duplicate content. we are link building at a pace of around 40 mentions a month. some are no follow, some do follow and some no links. We are diversifying links to include branding in addition to target keywords. We have pretty much exhausted every avenue we can think of now, but we cannot jump over to page 1 for any significant keywords we are targeting. Our competitor websites are not that powerful, and metrics are similar to ours if not lower. 1. please can you advise anything else you can think of that we should look at. 2. we are even considering going to a new domain and 301'ing all pages to this domain in an attempt to shake off the algorithm filter (penalties). has anyone done this? how long can we expect to get at least the same ranking for the new domain if 301 all urls to it? do you think its worth it? we know the risk of doing this, and so wanted to seek some advice. 3. we have on the other hand considered the fact that we have disavowed so many links (70%) that this could be a cause of the page two problem, however we are link building according to moz metric standards and majestic standards with no benefit.. do you think we should increase link building? Advice is appreciated!

Thumbtack Blatantly Violating Google TOS?
Hi, We have a business registered on Thumbtack so we receive their newsletters. I'm aware that review sites offering a "badge" or verification logo which links back to your profile is nothing new. But the email I received from Thumbtack is a fairly blatant attempt to game Google for popular keywords. I was just curious on your thoughts about this. I believe it was Overstock who did something like this and got slapped by Google pretty hard for a while. Could Thumbtack be heading down the same path? Image: http://i.imgur.com/FWPnmEP.jpg

Avoiding the "sorry we have no imagery here" G-maps error
Hi there, we recently did a redesign on a big site and added Gmaps locations to almost every page since we are related to Real State, Listings, Details, search results all have a map embedded. While looking at GWT I found that the top keywords on our site (which is in spanish) are the following. have here imagery sorry After a quick search I found out this is a Gmaps bug, when Google Bot accesses the Pages it throws an error out with this text repeated several times. If you do a search for "sorry we have no imagery here" you will see lots of sites with this issue. My question is, Is this affecting the overall SEO since Bots are actually crawling and indexing this hence its being reported by GWT, Should I cloak this to robots? Has anyone noticed this or has been able to fix it? Thanks in advance!

Penguin Maybe? Ranking low for main term: Trying to find cause and correct
Hello, For nlpca(dot)com one of our main keywords is the term "NLP" We are ranking 25th for that term.Possible causes: 1. keyword stuffing on home page, though we need to use the term over and over again to describe ourselves. Also, competitors like nlpco(dot)com and nlpu(dot)com also mention "NLP" a lot 2. Backlink profile: see this spreadsheet. We have a lot of sites from other countries and many sitewides but all natural and almost all branded. Ou company names are NLP Institute of California, NLP California, and NLP and Coaching Institute. 3. nlpcacoach(dot)org is a sitewide footer link. So is iepdoc.nl. We're going to ask the first site to take our link down. 4. No "What is NLP" article. I think that might help. 5. Most of our 60 articles are posted on other sites. We author about 30 of them. I'm working on authorship via rel="author" and rel="me" links. There's usually 2 authors 6. Most of the title tags used to be 4 keywords separated by pipes -"|" I changed them all after the updates took the keyword "NLP" down. That's about all I can think of. What do we do or clean up?

Is Google now punishing anchor text?
Hi All, I was just wondering if Google is starting to punish anchor text links? I've noticed that one of my clients domains has slightly reduced and they have slipped a few places in rankings for a key term since. I found this bizarre as the last few links I built were both relevant and strong but I did use an anchor text? Any feedback would be useful, I'm slightly confused here?

Google turned me down, don't know why...
Hello, I'm experiencing decreasing on some of my keywords. I'm aware of some things which could be responsible for it. So I'd like to asi you, if my thoughts are right, and what to do with it. 1. I put backlinks leading onto my website. Those backlinks are on website I also own (they are on the same server). But nothing happened. Than I put other backlikns on this webiste. Those links also led to webistes I own. So could Google "punnished" those websites I'm linking to? 2. I offered my content to another website, which has a higher authority. This content had been published on my website weeks ago, I put it on this (another site). Co could Google punnished me for "duplicate" content? 3. In the past, we outsorced our SEO, and the company which was responsible for our SEO put backlinks leading to our website almost everywhere, I mean, those websites, they put links leading to our webistes fos focused on almost everything but our field (finance). But everything seemed to be fine, till now 4. Couple of days ago, I put our RSS on many RSS agregators and put our webiste on many catalogs. My website URL is www.penizenavic.cz Could you help me out? 🙂 Thanks a lot Petr

Why did Google reject us from Google News?
I submitted our site, http://www.styleblueprint.com to Google to pontentially be a local news source in Nashville. I received the following note back: We reviewed your site and are unable to include it in Google News at this

time. We have certain guidelines in place regarding the quality of sites
which are included in the Google News index. Please feel free to review
these guidelines at the following link: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35769#3 Clicking the link, it anchors to the section that says: These quality guidelines cover the most common forms of deceptive or manipulative behavior, but Google may respond negatively to other misleading practices not listed here (e.g. tricking users by registering misspellings of well-known websites). It's not safe to assume that just because a specific deceptive technique isn't included on this page, Google approves of it. Webmasters who spend their energies upholding the spirit of the basic principles will provide a much better user experience and subsequently enjoy better ranking than those who spend their time looking for loopholes they can exploit. etc... Now we have never intentionally tried to do anything deceptive for our rankings. I am new to SEOmoz and new to SEO optimization in general. I am working through the errors report on our campaign site but I cannot tell what they are dinging us for. Whatever it is we will be happy to fix it. All thoughts greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Jay0
