SEO and IP based content
-
Hello,
We are building a guide/directory that will service multiple cities across Canada. Currently, our home page will detect your IP, and display local content on the home page. Although we feel this is incredibly useful to the end user, we are worried about how search engines will interpret our home page.
In addition to our home page, should we have landing pages for each city that we are in?
and should we follow site structure like this? www.thesite.com/vancouver
So if a user from Vancouver goes to our home page, they will see Vancouver related content, but how would a search engine see the home page?
We would like to know the best approach to placing well for searches in different Canadian cities.
Most of our searches will be city specific: Calgary widgets, Vancouver widgets, etc.
Thanks

Since most of your searches will be city specific, I would definitely recommend having landing pages for each city. There, you can go into more detail about the specific widgets for each city and what makes them unique.
It's fine to have some localized content served up on your home page, but I would recommend having some static, non-dynamic content there as well. Spend some time thinking about what the "default" version of the page would be. A good question to try to answer is: what should a user see if they're coming to the site from an IP you don't have content for, or even an IP outside of Canada? A home page is a great place to show who you are in a broader sense, and give users and search engines an idea of what you're about and why they should trust you. You can include that information along with a modicum of local-focused content that appears based on the user's IP address, that encourages them to click through to the local-specific landing page where they can get more in-depth information. I hope that helps!

Hi Eric,
Local SEO is my area of skill, and what I can tell you from that perspective is that a directory like yours will not actually be able to achieve local pack rankings in Google, because those are entirely based on physical address, not on content. So, rather, what your goal should be would be to rank well organically beneath the local packs for your core searches. You will be competing against the likes of YP and Yelp and can use their structure as a guide for how to build a directory like theirs. But, beyond this, we get outside of my area of knowledge and so I hope you'll receive some more traditional SEO advice, vs. Local SEO advice.

Hi Eric,
I don't have many specifics on what the search engines specifically think about this, but I won't stay away from personalising your home page based on the data you have on a user as it's mostly likely that the user has some impact on what he wants to see. In our case as well we have to show different ad servers for different countries which will change the experience of the user based on certain countries. That shouldn't be an issue for the user but also not for the search engines as they must have the feeling that a user is being taken care off.
Hope this helps!

National services provider and localized SEO (no physical stores)
Doing work for a telecom provider who operates in over 25 states. They are not trying to drive traffic to their brick-and-mortar stores. They want their marketing website to show products/services/pricing dynamically when a user enters their zip code. Previously, we could not show this until the shopper was already in the purchase flow that began with their serviceable address. They want to move these location-based details more forward in the shopping experience. They would likely have a "default" zip and set of services/pricing displaying until a user changes their location. My question is how does Google treat local SEO on a site where all location-targeted content is dynamic? Will the website suffer in localized search, when a shopper, say, in Colorado, wants to search for Internet providers? Is it better to have distinct landing pages for each territory with services/pricing?

Should local businesses focus exclusively on a local SEO strategy (and forget traditional SEO)?
Hello Friends! I work at a small, local company. We definitely want to rank high for local search , so we see the value of having a local SEO strategy. But does it make sense for us to also invest in a traditional SEO strategy? My understanding is that a traditional SEO strategy is focused on improving your site's visibility on a national or international scale. Does this make sense for my company if only local customers convert? If we had unlimited time and resources, I'd be all for a traditional SEO strategy. I understand that the more traffic, backlinks, etc. my site generates from producing relevant content, the higher my ranking. But my company has to be very strategic about where we spend our time since our resources are limited. So...How much can or does a traditional SEO strategy impact local search results? I'd hate to spend the time writing a beautiful SEO-optimized blog on dog grooming, for example, if that effort won't impact my SERP ranking when someone in my area searches for "dog grooming near me." I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Spaces between Letters and Numbers SEO question
This is a fun one - Example: Mercedes Benz is pushing to have all of there vehicle models to coincide with the world branding such as the "C300" is supposed to be "C 300" and the "E300" is supposed to be "E 300"... I have a few issues here as when I use Voice Search for "Mercedes Benz C 300" there is no way (that I know of) to add a space between the number and letter. In addition, when searching for the "C 300 for sale" Google corrects the text with "Did you mean: C300 for sale". I am seeking a way to accommodate both versions of the models WITHOUT adding the both C300 and C 300...etc. to the text on web pages. OR will Google eventually change the model names over time as Mercedes-Benz regulates the new U.S. naming convention. Tough question - any thoughts? Thank you for your help -

Location based IP Redirect cuasing Google Search Issue
Hi there, My client has a .com.au site (www.example.com.au) for Australian visitors and a .com site for US visitors (www.example.shopify.com). The .com.au site has a lot of content while the .com site has little content, due to only recently starting business in the US and due to seasonal offerings. The client does not want US visitors to see the .com.au site. Se we set up an IP redirect, so users with a US IP address are directed to the .com site. This negatively and significantly effected our Google organic search rankings on https://www.google.com.au My question is what is best practice solution in this situation? thanks

How can I personalize content based on a state/region? Is it possible?
I'm getting a lot of traffic from different regions throughout the US. I need to personalize the content in my website or on a certain landing page based on the users state/region. Is it possible? For example, forwarding a user that lands on page "x" to page "y" if he's from California and to page "z" if he's from South Carolina. And of course, can this somehow affect my rankings in Google? Thanks!!

Local SEO for B&B - Attracting International Customer
Hi Guys, Hope the MOZ expert community will be able to help me 🙂 What would be the best way to manage the SEO for a Bed and Breakfast ? As the B&B is in a touristic place in France attracting lots of German, American and British tourists, the website will be in French, translated in English and German. It will be set up under a .fr extension and using wordpress multisite for each languages, so it will look like this: French: www.mydomain.fr English: en.mydomain.fr German: de.mydomain.fr They'll roughly have the same content for the business part, but they'll have different articles on their respective blogs. Now my questions are: If I sign up to Google my business (http://www.google.com/business/) Would I be able to translate all my business descriptions, separate the reviews per language, use google+ for different language? If not, then should I sign up for the French version of "google my business" and then open 2 separate G+ pages for the English and German version ? Can I open 3 different "google my business" account for each language but with the same google account, same telephone number and same business address ? Should I actually "translate" my business name and create 3 separate website so I can open a "Google my business" for each, but then they'll still have the same address and phone number ? Basically, I want to find the best solution for people around the world to see the content in their own language (reviews, blog post...) and also show up on map listings for google.com /.co.uk / .fr / .de etc... Other social media: Facebook: should I have one page and target the English language for each post in English, etc... Or should I have 3 facebook page in each language ? Should I have 3 pinterest accounts, or should I create 3 boards for each language so I can describe each pictures in proper language Miscellaneous Don't hesitate to give me any other important tips that I should think about before launching ! After being an employee for many years, I want to rock my own business 🙂 Cheers

2 Word EMD's - Good of bad for SEO
Hello Again Moz Folks, I have a domain: www.edmontonweb.ca
Local SEO | | Web3Marketing87
It is currently on page 2 and I'm trying to figure out ways to improve its ranking. Because it is an EMD, I considered forwarding it to www.launchwebdesign.ca Considering there is existing Domain Authority on edmontonweb.ca, is this a good move?
Would forwarding the domain transfer DA to launchwebdesign.ca? Thanks, Anton0
