When working on navigation, is it best for product collections to appear under multiple menu headings or just the one that defines it the most?
-
We are an e-commerce site selling outdoor clothing/equipment and I am managing the SEO with only a years worth of experience under my belt! We are looking at changing the navigation as we are selling a bigger range of products and we would like to make it more user friendly.
When looking at both crawlability and customer friendly navigation too, is it best to list product collections under whatever menu it applies to, or just the one that it best falls under. For example, 'climbing shoes', should that go under 'outdoor footwear' and 'climbing equipment' or just 'outdoor footwear'? Does it even matter from an seo perspective?! I know that being user-friendly is more important but just wondering if its less or more important for page rankings if its linked to from less or more pages internally. Thanks!

Place them in menu headings that are relevant and useful for the visitors.
You don't want to have customers thinking... Why did they put this crap in here. As soon as they start seeing "contamination" in your menu their shopping in that category will end.
What do you think of the Amazon SERPs where they are showing crap in their SERPs that does not match or even relate to the querry? It has a really bad odor to me.

Gifly.com: url structure for new site with only one kind of page
Hi, we are launching a new site called Gifly.com, it's all about Gifs. At the moment, our robots.txt is blocking everything because we want to have a solid url structure before going public. There is only one kind of page, the permalink which has this form: http://gifly.com/QPmf/ (the four characters 'QPmf' are completely random) What we made different from the multitude of other Gifs site is that we are

trying to categorize gifs with hashtags, so we introduced these kind of urls: http://gifly.com/FoYi/
http://gifly.com/FoYi/#fail
http://gifly.com/FoYi/#blonde
http://gifly.com/FoYi/#dumb This was done for several reason, the first is that each gif can have up to 10
hashtags. Another approach to this could have been: http://gifly.com/fail/FoYi/
http://gifly.com/blonde/FoYi/
http://gifly.com/dumb/FoYi/ ...but we will face tons of duplicated contents for search engines because the same gif
would have 10x permalinks this way. The way we use to navigate between hashtags is via buttons/ajax (see the list of hashtags on the left)
We know that google may have a hard time understanding the site's structure, We'd like to know if the current set of urls, as: http://gifly.com/FoYi/
http://gifly.com/FoYi/#fail
http://gifly.com/FoYi/#blonde
http://gifly.com/FoYi/#dumb could be okay if we provide google a solid sitemap. We are thinking about a first sitemap with the list of hashtags,
each hashtag points to a second sitemap containing the list of new gifs uploaded for said hashtag. Thanks! gifly_logo_r_a.gif0 -

More than 2K dofollow links, from one site with one anchor text?
A week ago one person of our team added a link with anchor text on a web directory website PR5, but from this one link, Google indexed more than 2K links from this website with same anchor text, and then our keyword ranked first on SERP. The problem is that this clearly look like SPAM to Google, so which way is better to remove this link, with disawow tool, or to contact the web directory site owner?Could anyone give me any advice for this?

Best way to set up a support site - sub domain, separate site or com/support?
My company is setting up our support site. It has been suggested that we set it up as a separate domain - www.company-support.com, rather than setting it up as a sub-domain (www.support.company.com) or the usual www.company.com/support. The person who proposed this believes it wlll create link juice, but i wonder if splitting the traffic will create more harm than good? Opinions please!

What type of interlinks are best from articles I write?
Hi everyone, I run a job board (job website) - www.hawaiijobengine.com - and on the homepage I have 50 job categories ("Accounting / Finance" is one another is "Admin / Clerical" etc). I write your typical 400 word article length, giving career insight. Questions: should I 70% of the time try to use exact keywords in the article and link to those categories and other 30% of links should be to more specific search terms like "accountant in CITY NAME". The 50 categories already have decent rankings already and those are the once I am trying to push higher. Obviously, I also want weaker pages (more specific search terms) to rank higher too. I am writing genuine and original content, it is just a matter off whether I should adjust my keyword focus. On average how many different interlinks from a 400 page article is acceptable. Range of 1-3, with 2 on average sounding about right? Most of the times I have only 1 or 2 interlinks from each article, but once in a while I want to link 6-7 places within the article. I don't know if that is appropriate. thank you, Kristian

Marketing URLs - best practices
Hi, We do have a consistent url structure like http://www.company.com/productname-london
Link Building | | ecnic
http://www.company.com/productname-auckland
etc. Now marketing wants to include each URL in our yearly printed catalogue.
Out of marketing reasons (I agree with that), they think the URLs are too long and should be for example: http://www.company/london
http://www.company/auckland
etc. Our brochure is very important for direct customers and we have a target group that actively uses the internet and social media and therefore will pick up these links. Even if we do correct redirects in the background - couldn't we have the problem
that we have a double set of urls? What do you think about that?0
